I heard Jeff Beck on a youtube link. Then I discovered Imogen Heap through Jeff Beck. Now I'm discovering Urban Species through Imogen Heap. The Circle is complete, God bless you, Tube.
This was the first time I heard Urban Species and the beautiful voice that is Imogen Heap.Gutted that it was the Glastonbury I missed between 95 and 2000.
If it can be possible to appreciate a musical piece as pure sound, Heap's works are powerful by themselves (it's not really possible, but I think we'd try to assess it like heuristics of audience responses where they're only given recordings and nothing more). Adding to awe for some is knowledge that pieces powerful for listeners are composed in entirety by Heap alone. More awe amplification can come from knowledge that powerful pieces composed by Heap are performed by her alone in entirety from the whole cloth in real time, with Heap's sophisticated use of looping one-take recordings and layering them over herself with clockwork or rubix-cube like precision,-ish. If I saw Heap on the street, it would be quizzical for me, for I'd see with my eyes probably some low activity mundane scene with her in it, knowing that she dominates this entire musical dimension off on the side thankfully for others to immerse themselves in it. Maybe in some ways its like having a full understanding of how life works, at a mollecular level, and appreciating its magic and dynamism, then looking at an apple--you know it represents all that magic, yet there it is, just sitting there like some inert object. It's a bit unsettling, interesting, 'piquant', or what? Adjectives abound. Anyway. It's curious. And then we have this video, which is to me a Heap fan, adorable in that Heap who I can visualize as some sort of whirlwind of potential musical production, perhaps visualizable somewhat as the cyborg secretaries from 'Ghost in the Shell - Stand Alone Complex -, whose fingers explode into trees of many smaller robotic fingers, like type writer typeface arms, exploding activity over the keyboard at superhuman velocities, magnitudes, output, etc, is just holding a microphone, bouncing on her feet on the stage in a way typical of back-up common unsung background singers. Knowing her output capability, looking at this simple performance seems either impish or earthy, or what, but it's striking, or poignant, for reasons I'll pleasurably continue unfolding (or folding, per sword construction metaphor) as time goes on. Cheers, world. Hey, Heap, you wouldn't happen to be interested in cancer research, would you? Ok, bye now.
Hey, really like this song.. I'd never heard of Urban Species before but I'll certainly look out for them in future, this track sends chills up the spine.. Brilliant! Thanx for posting and for taking the trouble to improve the ending.. it's much better now! Px :))
