  • Director: Georges Méliès
    Production Company: Star Film Company
    Country: France
Notes: This film appears on the DVD Georges Méliès: First Wizard of Cinema, Disc 4 erroneously identified as Le Nouveau seigneur du village. A fragment of the actual Le Nouveau seigneur du village appears as an unidentified film on Georges Méliès: First Wizard of Cinema Disc 5. According to film historian David Bond, who heard from Méliès' great-grandson, Jacques Malthête, via their mutual acquaintance Roland Lack, "it was submitted by Gaston Méliès (Georges' brother) to the U.S. Copyright Office as a Star film and the label on the film canister was Tribulation or the Misfortunes of a Cobbler which, as far as I can see, it really cannot be. But it is not really a 'nouveau seigneur' film either and it is not set in a village. The little market at the beginning is supposed to be an a area of Paris where the revolutionary Jacobin club used to be in the late eighteenth century and it is a sort of parable about respecting the value of the working man. But I can find no candidate among known Méliès titles for what it might actually be."
