Insulate those boards bruh! *And don't finger high voltage circuitry!* Even if just to show. This is how you die...
From my years of coilguns, I can definitely say this needs more care; a better coil (wind it smoothly as possible) and short-as-possible connection to capacitors / SCR, with good gauge wire (typically twice the thickness of coil-wire)
Also, capacitors will be tuned by coil size + inductance. For multistage, you add the factor of the projectile's speed... Note, everyone says "bigcoil, more capacitors", but this is not the case at all!!! Coil size is tuned by *projectile dimensions*. Capacitors set by how much acceleration the coil is delivering, versus the projectile speed. You want the capacitors to be fully discharged when the projectile has reached the middle of the coil... Lots of maths, especially for multistage...
But when done right, multistage is the way to go, with infrared / laser triggering and fully tuned coils... It kinda comes out at a standard sizing of sorts... My simulations scared me into discontinuation of the project (too effective, experiment too deadly to perform etc.) *but i may look into this once again...*
Please read up on Ballistics engineering for projectile knowledge... There is a ratio between diameter and length (I *think* its 3x the radius, with the point occupying 1/3 the length, but memory could be off; read up on it...)
Above all remember; this is a weaponry engineering project, it is somewhat of a "thing" you don't want people to play about with (you seem to get this which is good)
It also contains LETHAL voltages! Don't get comfortable around it, because if insulation breaks down, parts can become 'live' at the 400V level, and YOU could become a patch for that current to shunt to circuit ground, which is the worst-case!
Believe me, i've been hit by such a shock from a simple LED filament light; the capacitor on the output discharged through me when i unplugged it: I was touching a circuit-grounded part (the plug!), and i think the tip of my little finger brushed over the exposed capacitor terminal. This crossed my chest (in one arm, out the other), which is the deadly part... Thankfully i'm alive, and can tell you of the dangers. I only received about 150V in that incident...
400V is just nuts so please don't put your fingers anywhere near those voltages if you even *think* they are present!
Please don't die, there's enough stories of fried tinkerers to keep you up for three days straight -_-
