I’m a huge Succession fan, but I’m happy to see Pedro get some recognition. The actors from Succession have gotten a ton of deserved awards this season and it’s nice to the wealth spread around a bit.
He probably won because Kieran and Matt Mac both got the Lead Actor nomination from Succession. They were both favs who won Emmys so probably split the vote.
Pedro Pascal’s win was incredible. Da’Vine Joy Randolph sweeping every award makes me happy. She’s such a good actress and I want to see her in more things.

I respect Mr. Paul Giammati, but I loved seeing Cillian winning …. I think he’s got the Oscar in the bag! It was also really nice to see Kenneth Branagh do the speech for the Oppenhomies 😂
The SAG Awards were on my Netflix front page as the first click right when you opened it up, so I'm not sure why they weren't for yours! Let's go Cillian!
The bear got Christmas stress episode spot on. I don't come from a big family. And there were no fights about forks. My late Mother was so stressed she had to kick us all us out of the kitchen. To de stress.
pedro pascal's name being announced made me jump and clap - like im sorry to all the succession fans but im still thinking about his portrayal of joel in the last of us season 1, how good he was, how touching, how human, so im just so happy for him and his emotions during his speech made me tear up 🥹
Thanks for the summary. La La Land was not really an ensemble. Same is true for Green Book, it wasn't nominated for a SAG ensemble. And it won Best Film at the Oscars. Hidden Figures and Black Panther won their respective years. Like Oppenheimer, you can't get more ensemble.
Thank you for clarifying how the individual members of a cast are selected to actually get the award. Wasn’t sure if SAG does the selection. Have to say Cillian’s win and the cast win makes me feel that Oppenheimer will sweep at the Oscars (other than supporting actress of course). As much as I’m rooting for Paul Giamatti to win, I won’t be unhappy if Cillian gets it. His performance is more subtle and complex than a lot of Oscar nominated performances usually are without the big, emotional actorly moments. He just embodied the character. So happy for Pedro Pascal, too.
Dan, Lead actor is OVER, there is no chance for Giamatti to win now. No actor has EVER come back from losing both the SAG and BAFTA (to the same winner, who wasn't a previous Oscar winner) in this category. Giamatti's CC win is meaningless.
Agreed. Cillian’s win last night basically seals the deal. Even if Giamatti won last night, Cillian would still have been the slight favorite. He is now the heavy favorite.
It’s really, really rare my favourite film of the year is nominated at the Oscars let alone winning like Oppenheimer has. I’m ecstatic it’s sweeping. I think it’s deserves all the accolades because it was phenomenally well made across the board. A true cinematic achievement. Cillian Murphy & Lily Gladstone have always been my picks to win. I’ve been cheering them on from the start of the season. Both giving subtle, nuanced, layered, internal performances that hit me so deeply & powerfully. Extraordinary actors deserving of their wins and hopefully the Oscars. Happy for Da’Vine Joy Randolph & Robert Downey Jr continuing their victories. Well done. 👏 Yay for Pedro Pascal. Great win for him. I completely agree with you about The Bear. I like the show a lot but for 2 years now it’s been sweeping up comedy when it’s not a comedy. It should be in Drama without a doubt. I find that very frustrating. I believe it’s only in the comedy category because is 30 minutes show correct? Fantastic SAGAwards show overall. I liked that it was on Netflix with no ads.
This! It's blatant category fraud to avoid losing to Succession which is a _much_ funnier show too, so ppl who make the disingenuous excuse that The Bear is a comedy/dramedy, actually, bc "Cousin is funny" or "there was a subtle joke that one time" can stop with the cope. It's more accurate and believable to call The Sopranos a comedy for its dark humour.
The Bear IS a dramedy. The humor is often subtle and dark but there are many comedic elements, scenes and lines throughout the whole show. So I’m okay with it winning best comedy awards. But, I do think there should be a separate dramedy category in fairness to other more traditional comedy shows
The Bear is definitely comedic. I laugh almost every episode. It's very darkly comedic at times and tragically comedic but people acting like there's zero comedy in that show are nuts. That car going through the house in the fishes episode is funny. All the kids getting xanax'd at the birthday party is funny. Richie calling all those dorks 4-chan Snyder-cut motherfuckers in the first episode is funny.
I feel like a lot of people, and I tend to notice this in Americans, don’t understand how subtly funny dark comedy can be. Eg people said this also about May December which I also think has a lot of dark comedy that people seem to miss.
Thank you Dan for always putting these together!! I know you have done an explanation video of how the voting happens with certain award shows, but can you please do a video with ALL the award shows "how the voting happens" and compare them with each other?

I do wish Bella won with Pedro. Their performance as Ellie, especially in episode 8, was flawless! That being said, they’re still very young, and they’ll have more opportunities to win, since “The Last of Us” still had its first season, vs “The Crown” had its last season.

I was quite surprised by Emma Stone not winning. Lily’s performance was great but it’s really her first ever (?) appearance in a major motion picture, so she would have time in the coming years to win.

Well, I'm sure outta the loop. Only ppl I recognized was Iron Man, Scarecrow, and Walter White's entourage. 😂 And I actually am fine with that. I haven't watched awards shows in what, 25 years, maybe? It was never really my thing. 🤷🏾♀️
When Oppenheimer won Best Ensemble, i literally thought the guy who gave the speech was Peter Sarsgaard when it turned out to be Kenneth Branagh who's having the biggest beard I've seen from him. How long has he been in his house or is he preparing another Shakespeare/Hercule Poirot performance? 😂
Yes!!! Thank you, Dan!! I dont understand hiw they could place "The Bear" in the comedy category!! Awards shows dislike comedy so much they decided to put what is a dramedy at best in the in the comedy category.
You have to keep in mind that until SAGs last year, Cate Blanchett was going to walk away with Best Actress. Then Michelle Yeoh swooped in for the EEAAO love and rode that tail all the way to an Oscar night victory. I think at this point the [slight as it ever may be] edge goes to Gladstone.
Da'Vine Joy Randolph has always read from her written thank you speech all throughout the season and each speech has been unique. I have no doubt she too will bring a written speech on stage at the Oscars!
I think the only real reason The Bear ends up in comedy categories is because the episodes are roughly 30 minutes each. And yeah, that's dumb, but it does seem to be the deciding factor.
The Bear is really great!! But it’s clear they didn’t want to go up against Succession , next year if it’s still in the comedy section then Ted will beat it lmaoo
The Bear is definitely funny. Richie being stabbed in his ass, the kids being drugged, Neil Fak, Jimmy Cicero. It’s not a comedy, but I’d call it a hybrid.
I love The Bear. Watched it from the beginning. The only way this is a comedy is becaused I laughed out loud when the awards put it in the comedy category.
Emma Stone's reaction to Lily Gladstone's win was so amazing. She didn't care if she loose or win, she just happy and being supportive that Lily won the award. She has been in her position before since she won 3 SAG Awards before (two for Best Ensemble and one for Best Actress) so she knew what it's like for Lily to win that award. So happy to see actresses supporting each other 🥰
You are crazy for thinking Succession is more of a comedy than The Bear. There are soooo many comedic moments in The Bear that have me rolling. It’s definitely a hybrid drama / comedy
I also had to search for the awards show this am on my Netflix which was confusing as it had aired the night before. You would expect ir to be featured on the front page.
Best Picture uses rank choice voting, which I think is in Oppenheimer's favor. It hasn't been a base breaking film. Cannot imagine anyone ranking it last.
I just started watching The Bear and completely agree, not a comedy at all.. But the episodes are sitcom length so maybe that is why? I just finished catching up on Only Murderers in the Building, and THAT is a Comedy. Add Ms Maisel to that list as shows that should have been winning Comedy awards this year instead of The Bear.
The problem that had La La Land was that, despite being great acted film, it's basically a two-actors film, all the others are more or less background noise... So having it nominated for ensemble cast would be as reasonable as nominating Sleuth back in 1973, when the award didn't exist.
The Best Picture front runners are only going to be seen on Oscar night with the Screenplay wins. So Killers of the Flower Moon is the only one that you can mark as unofficially out of the race.
Yes thank you Dan, I've watched the bear recently too, great show but I don't understand why it's been nominated as a comedy. Yeah it has funny movements but a lot of dark ones and nor dark funny. Wonder who made that voting choice
There are way too many Award Shows, and yeah most ppl agree that Succession is more of a comedy than The Bear which is at best a dramedy :) Its mostly 30min format allows it to get away with a 'Comedy' classification even more so than Barry! After The Bear & Iron Claw, wouldn't mind Jeremy Allen White as The MCU's Wolverine.
I’m pretty over this awards season at this point. The Oppenheimer train will keep chugging along to its inevitable best picture win and all its other noms. I would just like to see Lily Gladstone take home the Oscar at this point and then call it a day on this awards season
Dan, always great perspective. I think the Oscars should award an ensemble. Question: Do you think it would affect voting in the other awards? Paul G might have a better chance for Actor because Oppenheimer gets Ensemble. Same for Brokeback Mountain and Crash.
one of the tricky things with nominating la la land for best ensemble is that the cast was like three people and one of them was john legend, who was fine, but he's hardly an actor. so a lot of people wrote off la la land as not doomed for picture as there was a justifiable reason not to nominate it for ensemble.
Dan! J. Heart doesn't deserve the shade. He has been on a decent roll ever since Sin City. His Black Mirror episode was excellent. His Lawrence portrayal was an anchor that Oppenheimer needed. The engineering foil that was (or wasn't?) on team Oppie that his presence played a very important part in the movie's success. Dare I say he was more memorable and resonating that even former Best Actor Rami Malek.
I do think the The Bear is comedic. In season 1, a lot of the comedy is the chaos of the kitchen and the building misunderstandings among the characters. There is clear comedy in Sugar's husband, the Faks, Richie, Jimmy, etc.
the show last night had:

I’m waiting for Sandra Hula, from anatomy of the fall, or Lily Gladstone to win best actors actress at the Oscars
Davine also read her acceptance speech in the BAFTA
I’ll always appreciate Licorice Pizza for having a scene on how to pronounce my last name.
All The Film Awards Were Deserved and happy Pedro won.
Lilys' was not deserved at all.
@@tonyg76 She was better was the rest aside from Stone just because I haven't seen Poor Things yet. Wish Greta Lee got nominated for Past Lives.
Dan, always great perspective.
I think the Oscars should award an ensemble.
Question: Do you think it would affect voting in the other awards?
Paul G might have a better chance for Actor because Oppenheimer gets Ensemble. Same for Brokeback Mountain and Crash.
I don't care at all about these awards, I just like your videos.
one of the tricky things with nominating la la land for best ensemble is that the cast was like three people and one of them was john legend, who was fine, but he's hardly an actor. so a lot of people wrote off la la land as not doomed for picture as there was a justifiable reason not to nominate it for ensemble.
Dan!
No shade from me!
I do think the The Bear is comedic. In season 1, a lot of the comedy is the chaos of the kitchen and the building misunderstandings among the characters. There is clear comedy in Sugar's husband, the Faks, Richie, Jimmy, etc.
