Snow and Curt are on an epic French Christmas Village Tour in their camper van traveling across the Alsece Region of France! They will be visiting six different villages to give you a look at many different traditions as we get closer to Christmas Day. But, in this video, they show you the origins of one of hte most famous holiday traditions in the world... The History of the Christmas Tree! Why do we decorate with red, green, and white? Why do we hang balls on our trees? Just how old is the Christmas Tree? Millions of houses all across the world decorate a tree each year... it is perhaps one of our most iconic traditions. But, most of us do not know why! So, When Snow heard that they were near the 'birthplace' of the Christmas Tree... she knew they had to go and get the scoop! After you hear the story, you will likely never look at your Christmas Tree the same again... you will look at it with even more amazement! I really enjoyed the story of the Christmas tree. Fun to know how a such a big Christmas symbol originated and changed over the centuries to become what we see today. Personally I think I enjoyed the smaller, more intimate Christmas markets. Great to visit them because each has had their own vibe but the less crowded ones leave me all warm and cozy. Great video.

Oh I love French foods. Please find out why French people aren’t all overweight. Beautiful filming and music!
I think because they walk everywhere and eat real food, not genetically modified factory farmed pesticide and herbicide laden garbage. It also tastes like food. No super sizing either.
Because they walk a lot, I lived in Paris for over 4 years
They take 2 hours to consume a little plate. To the French eating is socializing.

Apparently, they don’t “snack”.
There is nothing like being filled with good, hot local food and drink, and walking through a European village among the locals. I am so pleased the sun came out for even a little while. Curt has the right idea with layering. It took me a long time to see the wisdom in layering for the variety of weather in the UK where I once saw it snow out of clear blue, sunny sky!
Snow, do yourself a favor and buy a couple of long rectangular scarves. Not the knitted winter kind, just something made of challis or cotton or a blend. European women can be seen wearing scarves at all times of the year and it is to keep the wind and chill off their necks. You will find them indispensable and a great way to dress up a plain outfit when space is a consideration. Our narrow boat was 57 feet long and 8 feet wide. If one removed the outside bow and stern portion then we had a total of 240 sq. feet of loving space and every inch counted just as it does in your van.
Alsace was part of the Germanic state claimed by Charlemagne and his descendants, and then by the Spanish Hapsburg dynasty until the 1600s so when the tradition of bringing evergreen trees inside and decorating them began, the little village in your video was German not French. It was sold to France by the Hapsburgs in the 1600s but of course Germany and France continued to fight over which country owned this region for centuries.
I do not know if church attendance was compulsory in France and Germany in the Middle Ages as it was in England but I would bet it was, and one could be fined for non-attendance. All of the amazing carvings on the cathedrals were a means of imparting Bible stories and church lore to an uneducated populace who could not read. The figures and murals tell the stories.

But as you know breakdowns, stumbling blocks always seem to get in the way. I travel with my 2 bigs dogs who have been wonderful. Wishing I’d decorated my RV because I’m not sure I’ll make it back to the west coast to my home and my grandsons. Your videos give me my memories. FYI When you reach the Normandie area there is a neat little campground where you can rent a two bedroom cabin for 350 usd a week. Thought I'd let you know in case the van is in need of some maintenance its a good place to stay. Thank you so much for taking us along on your adventures. Thank you for sharing the story of the Christmas Tree! 🎄 The tradition of bringing evergreens such as pine, holly and ivy indoors goes back to pagan /druid times as evergreens symbolize everlasting life. As late as 1840 apparently, most Americans saw the Christmas Tree as a pagan symbol! Fascinating 😊

Very very interesting. My grandfather was born in Frankfurt but lived in this city during his childhood. My grandmother lived in Strassburg. When they married, a couple years after WWI, they migrated to Brazil. I didn’t go to Obernai but I visited both, Frankfurt and Strassburg, some time ago.
