I have listened to this cover for the last 3 week every time im at work. My coworkers have asked what language ive been singing along with. My parents grew up with the song, and I heard it on the cassette tapes they recorded, and I wouldn't stop listening to it...This song has such power over me, a deeper analogy of the text leads me to believe the girl with pearls in her hair is a personification of Hope and the oceans deep are the sorrows of war and destruction, considering the song was made around the Vietnam War, I could be wrong about the connection.
Well, first: the more precise translation is "the girl with pearly hair". Secound: you are right, she is kinda personification of Hope, but she is an actuall spirit. Third: this song is about a real samanistic vision ("Was I dreaming? Or maybe it was real.") so it is not a coincidence that it's touching characteristics and popularity is the same after even 50 years. Fourth: nope, it's not about the Vietnam War. It took place in the middle of the XVIII. century's chaotic events. If you see the mythological movie "Oz, the Great and Powerful" (2013), the text of the song will make a little bit more sense.
