I've been fortunate enough to have visited Italy 4 times. However, I've never been south of Rome. That is the focus of my next trip, and I'm looking forward to a visit to Sicily. Thank you for adding to my trip-planning collection.

Southern Italy is the oldest part of Italy, it was Magna Graecia, so it existed before Rome. When you think of Italian stereotypes (gesturing, pizza, the sea, passion etc.. but also negative things like the mafia) you are talking about the south. So yes, you have not visited Italy without having seen the south.

Not far from Palermo's historic center are Le Catacombe dei Cappuccinni. If you go to a Catholic Ash Wednesday service, you will be reminded that we come from ashes and we will return to them. Well, at Le Catacombe dei Cappuccinni, the Cappuccins have taken it further. These are essentially catacombs populated with hundreds of skeletons of friars and others, some from at least as long ago as the 13th century, to remind us to get right with God and each other before our earthly demise.
