"Let's do a show about murder! But not a real murder, a trick fake murder, like a lie. Let's play audio from the fake murder and pretend it's real audio from a real murder. This is a bulletproof plan, and will in no way go badly."
I will never forget how that line, "She wrote some ad reads before she died. I think we should read them, it's what she would have wanted," was actually written for this bullshit. This could have been so good as a satire, this would have been hilarious in that context but instead it's just really sad
When the killer’s MO is murderous rube goldberg machines that chop off peoples’ heads, I feel like the comedy writes itself. Hell, make the killer really obvious from the start but the police are inept and can’t figure out that it’s the guy right in front of them, just lean into the satirical elements
I just finished Less is Morgue and that line wouldn’t feel out of place for one of the Ad reads on the podcast. “Jery…He, passed away two days ago and it’s been really rough.” “Yes, did you see his will? It had some ad reads on there, I think he’d want us to read them…Thank you for listening to Less is Morgue the comedy podcast written by Meg Malloy Tuten…”
We cannot overstate how much of a meme this podcast is in our circle of friends. Henry, Charlie and I watched Torchwood: Miracle Day together and every time Wayne Knight's character was onscreen one of us would go 'OH FUCK THAT'S THE RUBEDEC KILLER!!'
....recognized your voice. That's an incredible place to end. I don't know how to express the emotions this 113 minute story has caused me, but thank you SO MUCH for sharing it. All of it.
the idea of the post-humous ad reads SLAYED me. that would be a really funny joke in like a dark comedy instead of, you know, a fake true crime podcast
So recently a UA-camr did a video doing a fake true crime podcast but set in the FNAF universe and there were two ad reads. They were fake of course and the placement is honestly hilarious.
Okay but legitimately, if Ring Doorbell was the sponsor of an episode where the audio from a Ring was played earlier on as evidence, and the sponsor read was revealed to be recorded after the rest of the episode, and one character stormed out of the ad read upon learning who the sponsor was, that REALLY would’ve helped sell the stakes, the rawness of the emotions, and the idea that these characters are real people trying to make ends meet while they investigate something deeply personal by commercializing their struggle
Reminds me of the film maker who decided to do an ARG in the style of a paranormal top ten video series with an ongoing plot about black-eyed children attacking his home. Unfortunately he underestimated how seriously people who believe in the paranormal take that sort of thing, so once they realized it wasn't real he began to face harassment and stalking from total strangers who were mad that he lied to them about having evidence of the paranormal.
You won’t believe this but I was actually in conversation to do a project with him too before he did the black-Eyed Children thing haha. I think Muto took it too far when he threw in the miscarriage plotline, much like how it was bad taste for Alex to weave in the Femicide epidemic to this goofy Saw ripoff.
The crazy part is that once he was found out his defense was basically "you should have known it was fake, we all know this stuff isn't real". Got serious reddit fedora meme vibes off that and completely lost what respect I had for him off his previous works.
@@TomSketchit Ah, yes! Fantastic Daily was the channel. It sucks that he didn't realize the audience he targeted was 1000% wrong till it was too late. He would've done way better to post on 4chan's /x board (the Paranormal board) and some subreddits that are skeptical and enjoy ARGs. Like he could've gone to the ARG subreddit and on an alt/sock account posted a link to the videos in order and asked the board something like: "Hey! I was in the room for a phonecall between Henry and Mr. Aldea and I'm so mad I wasn't allowed to come on and share some of the bullshit I heard because that's ""unprofessional""". everything you assume about this man from listening to this video is true.
A clueless captain with a broken rudder, a map he spilled coffee on, and the arrogance to think he knows where the crews going as they head straight into a leviathans gaping mouth?
This story was so full of twists and turns and yet the biggest one was them referring to Roger Craig Smith and not immediately calling him the voice of Sonic the Hedgehog.
So Henry was in the same production as Danny Trejo who was in Brooklyn 99 as Rosa's father. Kyra Sedgwick played Captain Wunch in Brooklyn 99 and was in The Woodsman (and is married to) Kevin Bacon. I can't believe Henry has a six degrees from Kevin Bacon score.
A funny running joke they could have had in the series was that the killer wanted to be called the rubedep killer but everyone called him "the real life jigsaw" instead and he got increasingly more frustrated and obvious about it.
26:05 i felt physically ill thinking about the idea of tricking people into thinking they'd just heard someone actually die, holy fuck that would be traumatizing.

Somehow I listened to the whole podcast without catching on to the fact that it was *supposed* to be “real” and just naturally assumed it was an audio drama. I found it coming from Darkest Night, so I figured it was a similar fictional horror/drama podcast. The tone was nothing like an actual true crime show and the premise was buckwild. Also, as a true crime fan from Texas I would’ve known about Rube Goldberg/Saw inspired decapitations happening close to home in 2007 when I was a kid. So I went in assuming it was a scripted audio drama and found it pretty fun. Definitely absurd, but entertaining enough. Then I saw the infuriated reviews and realized they’d tried to market it as actual true crime and it made the whole podcast worse in hindsight. It was already mid at best (the episode where they’re investigating that one guy by questioning his daughter that you mentioned was my favorite- the tension was really good but I’m sad it never went anywhere) but what a wild thing to do. God, this video has awakened so many memories for me. Being adjacent to the back end of a lot of these events I can remember discussing so much of this with Henry and Meg at the time. In particular, I remember exploding with laughter at the doubling-down of wanting to turn The Heads of Sierra Blanca into a movie, and then talking at length with Henry about his more satirical take on the screenplay outline and how much better it was than the initial podcast.
Those were insane times, man. I’m so glad people like you, Gus, Meg, and Scott were around when all of this happened, or honestly, I would have doubted the events myself. It’s just so damn weird and wild
1:44:06 This video kept my interest and and attention for it's entire near two hour length. For that reason I already believe it to be a better movie than Batman V Superman, Iron Man 3, and most of Illumination's Dr. Seuss movies. Not a high bar but if those qualify as movies than so does this.
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned from you guys is that writing professionally is terrible and I should never do it. Exactly because of situations like this. Id rather have my creative freedom even if it means having another job.
You're probably not going to see this, Henry, but to add a weird coincidence: Wayne Knight was also in Punisher: War Zone, where his character gets kidnapped and murdered by a killer named...Jigsaw. Probably not at all relevant, but something that randomly came to mind after watching this. Love the channel!
This video always brings me so much joy. It’s like I’m personally sapping it from Henry’s soul every time I watch it like an energy vampire or something.
I remember this from when it was in the no sleep feed, what a small world! I think I remember talking about it on the nsp sub as well. As a true crime nerd I busted you at the saw trap and then Danny Trejo and would absolutely have recognised David Ault as well. Sounds like it was a real wild ride from both sides of the veil.
I love the video, stories like this are fun to listen to and really drowns out the screaming in the basement. I wanna see more stuff in the future from you guys.
And he did darkest night? Wow. It’s weird how much of this I have a past with. Darkest night was pretty good, although I remember a point where it fell of pretty hard.
I remember listening to the pilot and being, in order, shocked and upset because I thought the first tape might have been real, and then bored because it was very meandering and tropey. Great work relaying this story
I love that you all can talk about stories and review things while not only being very funny but also very knowledgeable about the film industry. Whether it's a serious review of something or just shooting the shit and reading something dumb or talking about a story, you all never seem to fail at being entertaining and interesting!
Absolutely incredible! I never expected such a rich tale could be woven about this show (that I'm only now learning about) - you couldn't get away with writing some of the things told here!!!
Honestly, the moral I got from this story is that marketing is incredibly important, and if you fuck it up your shows ratings will suffer. This could have been really good if they just didn't decide to market it as actual true crime. But because he decided to market it as true crime it suffered greatly
Granted, I kinda get the idea of the "Femicide Social Commentary" insofar as... if I was to be a serial killer. I'd probably choose a place where an epidemic of crime was leaving the cops unable to find any evidence.
So I talked about the absurdity of this story with some writer friends which lead me to talking to them about the only true crime podcast I ever heard, which just so happens to be about a crime that happened surprisingly close to where I live, so much so that I talked about it at the time with parents and co-workers and most even remembered following the news about the crime. Now they are asking why do I do this to myself because it - the actual true crime podcast, not the fake true crime podcast that is real - genuinely left me paranoid. Weird comment I know but recently I have been going through some of your videos and the early Less is Morgue Podcast and just wanted to say you are a very entertaining crew.
Something interesting about the Golden State killer is during his first spree of murders or shortly after he may have chosen to stop them he attended a town meeting where pretty much the whole town showed up to talk about how to stop the guy when a man stands up and starts berating him they didn't know he was attending the meeting but the man started berating the Golden State killer referring to him as a coward saying he would never come after someone who could fight back and shortly after this meeting the Golden State killer who can actually be seen in photos of the meeting attacked that man and his wife because at first he was only attacking women he changed his MO to be toward couples because of that man
I found your channel through your writing tips video, binged Less is Morgue became I love horror/comedy/urban fantasy, and finding this video was WILD. I totally remember getting the first episode of Heads of Sierra Blanca in a true crime podcast feed, and bailing from the "snuff" audio section because it was too disturbing. So, so glad that you've been able to move on to much batter pastures, the experience of being involved in its production seems like it must have been hellish.
I talk shit about the Black Tapes for doing a lot of this same stuff, but man. At least they had the excuse that most of us wouldn't believe the main characters were being menaced by pazuzu or something and they knew it.
You guys talking about how to sow the seeds of the murder before the show is driving me nuts because I feel like the much easier solution is basing the show around murders that wouldn't get a lot of new coverage, maybe wouldn't even be considered murders until this "true crime show" uncovered them. Like an Angel of Death kind of killer. Ah well- a really interesting if crazy behind the scene story, thanks for telling it!
This was really informative and entertaining. Thanks for sharing your experience and even being upfront about your missteps and failures. Its really cool and important to be able to be honest about stuff like this and I definitely enjoyed listening to this whole saga while doodling :)
I'm so gladi found this channel. I've been binging since last night. Y'all cover so much! Tv tries to true crime to DOuG Walker. My favorite true cringe is a channel called True Crime Rocket Science. And you're so right, for this to have worked, a 2007 crime podcast, you'd need a time machine. There's have to be old blog posts and news articles.
I am at work but I just wanted to let you know that I love your channel, the comedy is great and I love film reviews, and just even the randoms videos on the channel are great. Thank you 😊
I'm glad I wasn't alone for feeling mad that this was a fake "True" show. which looking back on I find a little interesting. See the show Video Palace is also presented as though it is a real documentary show, but at no point did I feel duped or cheated. And I think its because like the blair witch movie, you know going into it that its fake, because there is clearly supernatural stuff happening.
What a beautiful tragedy. Thank you for this story, the sheer absurdity of the whole situation is just unbelievable. Like a proper fake true crime story.
the amount of times I heard them say this is all real is making me think this is a fictional scandal being sold as real in the same vein as the show in the video
My favorite part of this story is getting the actor who did jigsaw in the “true crime” podcast and Henry slowing realized how ridiculous its getting and just done with this shit
29:43 "[the victims] were all, like, immigrants from Mexico" Haven't finished the video yet, but I'm calling it now: I'll bet anything that one of the reasons for Sierra Blanca's downfall is some flubbed social commentary on racism/xenophobia.
Hm. While I think it would have been just as poor taste (if not worse) than the femicide commentary, the plot would've at least made more sense if the sheriff was ludicrously racist.

Those were insane times, man. I’m so glad people like you, Gus, Meg, and Scott were around when all of this happened, or honestly, I would have doubted the events myself. It’s just so damn weird and wild
@@henrygalley2831 Honestly, just *hearing* about some of this stuff made me question my own sanity at times 😂
1:44:06 This video kept my interest and and attention for it's entire near two hour length. For that reason I already believe it to be a better movie than Batman V Superman, Iron Man 3, and most of Illumination's Dr. Seuss movies. Not a high bar but if those qualify as movies than so does this.
I personally quite liked Iron Man 3, but yes, I definitely agree that this story is far more interesting.
47:30 "Heinously irresponsible journalism"
So, like Tiger King, then?
1:08:48
that could have been a really well done, positively bone chilling moment in some sort of thriller about the ethics of true crime.
the fact that a person so close to the ivestigation was also the copycat killer fits so well as a saw inspired thing
Sounds like it was
a real wild ride from both sides of the veil.

Gus: that’s gonna lead to some issues, isn’t it? Like, in terms of what you can do for the story
Henry: *inflates balloon*
Huh??
I love the video, stories like this are fun to listen to and really drowns out the screaming in the basement. I wanna see more stuff in the future from you guys.
Please tell me you've got a RubDec machine going
Ill be honest, the /moment/ audio from the murder was played i was like "theres no way this is real"
This was a bit of a ride. Well done on you Henry for owning up to that.
Honestly, the moral I got from this story is that marketing is incredibly important, and if you fuck it up your shows ratings will suffer. This could have been really good if they just didn't decide to market it as actual true crime. But because he decided to market it as true crime it suffered greatly
This was a wild ride. Also, I love how much shade you consistently throw on RWBY.
It's like he tried to do Limetown.....but didn't understand why Limetown worked.
Granted, I kinda get the idea of the "Femicide Social Commentary" insofar as... if I was to be a serial killer. I'd probably choose a place where an epidemic of crime was leaving the cops unable to find any evidence.
oh man... I saw the comments section while waiting for an ad to finish. Now I'm hyped...
So every time I hear "RubDec" I'm thinking "Rube Deck" like it's a deck of cards where every card is a country bumpkin.
I haven’t finished the video yet and I’m scared by the title already.
This nightmare of a podcast killed my wife
Thank you 😊
So the REAL GUY auditioned to play the FAKE GUY in the REAL FAKE CRIME STORY
Being Mexican, past the quarter part of video, things got real funky.
I wonder what Danny Trejo was thinking during this process. Did he know this was gonna bomb? Was this just his way of filling time between roles?
I hope, for his sake, he doesn't remember a word of it
He's been in some pretty stinky projects, and he's still just bein' Danny Trejo.
I'm so happy I found this channel, please continue making content as long as it's creatively fulfilling
You could've made Saw 7 the game the ride the dead by daylight dlc the podcast but no you made rupdec rumble rivals, I hate wasted potential
What a beautiful tragedy. Thank you for this story, the sheer absurdity of the whole situation is just unbelievable. Like a proper fake true crime story.
The Jigsaw twist sent me XD. It's such a huge shame the marketing gimmick kneecapped this project.
I got reminded of this today.
That one dislike? Aldea.
I dont know what I’m watching but I’m down for it
What a fantastical clusterduck. Could probably make a really good story.
So, full-stop, I would watch the shit out of a behind the scenes documentary of this show
This was an amazing story to hear.
Im all alone, no one heeeeere around meeeeeee
Hi
Hello
@@chickengaming4344 pog
the amount of times I heard them say this is all real is making me think this is a fictional scandal being sold as real in the same vein as the show in the video
wow, a true crime podcast about an untrue true crime podcast crime!
The main base idea issue is the same as Fantastic Daily, Market a fictional story to those who want a true story, as a true story. Won’t end well
Hell yeah a fucking Internet Comment Etiquette reference. CEASE YOUR INVESTIGATIONS
It's Spookums Time
this ones gonna be over an hour long
Holy shit my family owns land there!
Blanca?
It sounds like Blanco...
El Blanco??

I can just picture Riley Hates listening to this. Like they know its bs, but they want to keep complaining about how Fake and deciduous it is.
Raul from fallout new Vegas is in a fake true crime story is the takeaway of this video
My favorite part of this story is getting the actor who did jigsaw in the “true crime” podcast and Henry slowing realized how ridiculous its getting and just done with this shit
vivziepop club helluva boss ep 4 the at it again
Hi how are you
Whatever happened to less is morgue
imo, Darkest Night was enjoyable until they jumped the shark in season 2.
GAS
Still better than Dear David
Did that tale find an unimpressive end?
@@llewelynshingler2173 hell if i know, didn't watch it

Haven't finished the video yet, but I'm calling it now: I'll bet anything that one of the reasons for Sierra Blanca's downfall is some flubbed social commentary on racism/xenophobia.
Hm. While I think it would have been just as poor taste (if not worse) than the femicide commentary, the plot would've at least made more sense if the sheriff was ludicrously racist.
absolutely riveting start to finish. thank you for unpacking this story!
