My son just came out in May. I hope some day he meets a nice smart guy like Pete. 💓
Hey, Pete. I love you, for your mind, of course. You got my vote, and would again.
I love this guy! So well-spoken, articulate and savvy.
He's so darn cute. I enjoy listening to him. Both for what he says and for his genuineness of it.
Absolutely love him!!!
I absolutely Love Love Love Secretary Pete Buttigieg💗
I came out as bi when I was 16 to my friends they still loved me when I came out to my mom I was 19 her words were 'so what?' Best thing to hear from mummy ❤
Yeah, when my niece came out as trans (used to be my nephew) no one in the family had the slightest issue with it. It did take some adjusting, but it was just little things. For me, it took a few months when I was talking to people in the family and maybe asking about her, to stop slipping up and calling her Matthew. She had been Matthew for almost 19 years, so it took a little while for my brain to disassociate the person from the name.
Hell, your mom probably already knew ;)
More love and power to you.
Glad you are getting all the family support you deserve but the issue remains the rest of society. With politicians actively fanning the flames of hate against LGBTQ people along with bad laws, hostility does remain an active concern a lot of you still face on a daily basis once you step through your front door. There is still much to do to if we are to truly have equality. We need to get these bad politicians out of positions of power and undo the horrible laws they create.
I'm happy for you!
It is one of the scariest leaps of faith when you risk rejection because of your identity, and it is one of the greatest reliefs when you are still accepted by those you care about. Have the courage to take that leap.
"Those that matter don't mind, and those that mind don't matter."
I've been retired from a 33 year career with the US DOT for 7 years, but I think I'll volunteer to go back to work as long as he's in charge!! (Although, the leadership of Obama's first Secretary of DOT, Ray LaHood, is a high bar to match. He rocked and he was a Republican!)
Ray LaHood is one of the last republicans I have genuine respect for.
Holy shit! A secretary that can actually bring excitement to improving the nation!
Hearing Slayer Pete talk about upgrading our passenger train system just makes my heart sing ❤️
We love you Mayor Pete!!!! Please please make another run for the White House in the future
The relief to hear an intelligent, articulate Cabinet member, after the last 4 years! Can anyone even remember anything significant Elaine Chao, the last Transport Sec, did or said?
Never mind the yawning chasm between Jen Psaki and ALL of Tr**'s Press Secs!
Hey Elaine Chao was busy making her family rich
I'm a transportation journalist who pretty much liked all the USDOT Secs *except* the one whose name is eerily close to mine. Ugh! So happy about Pete!
I love that he said "position of responsibility" instead of position of power.
Little nuances like that are what really tell you what people are about and what their motivations are
I'm sure the focus group he hired to craft his responses liked that phrase as well.
He’s always been all about public service - hard for folks to understand
@@oggyreidmore He spoke like that when he was the mayor of nowhere. I get you are cynical, it is hard not to be, but the guy is a the real deal.
@@sechay9328 He's wanted to be a politician since he was a kid. He spoke like a focus group his whole life. He'll say whatever the audience wants to hear. He was a leftist progressive when no one was watching, and when he got in power he bent to his mayoral campaign donors to squash evidence in a racial injustice case as a mayor. Then while running as president he was a progressive...until corporate donors to his campaign told him to stop and lean right, and then he cut a deal with Biden to drop out and endorse for a cabinet position and screw Bernie. His childhood dreams are all coming true and all he had to do was sellout his principles. He's "real" all right. A real slimy rat.
I like this guy. I hope he runs again and wins.
I STILL have a major crush on him!
This was really important to listen to, especially after the painful reality we are living in Miami.
The Hudson River tunnel may not be broken yet but it is wise to invest in upgrades or a parallel tunnel system now. As we have seen with the building in Miami maintenance is essential.
Karlheinz Egger: If the do construction like they do in sanctuary cities, will try to avoid that tunnel. That is, if it ever gets finished.
@karlheinz egger: Yes! The tunnels were damaged in Sandy & have only been patched. The Amtrak NEC is the most travelled corridor & carries major commerce and brain trust of America.
Invest before it becomes an expensive emergency.
No matter which side you're on, you gotta admit, Pete Buttigieg is a smart guy.
Well, if you're a staunch republican, he's not even a person
@@DrJellyFanguzzz Pete knows how to talk to republicans. He doesn't have any of that disdain, snark, arrogance, self-serving smugness. And people respond to him. That's just what he is naturally.

I hope for a day when "openly gay member of cabinet", "black president", etc. isn't something to celebrate. When it's just completely mundane, normal, even boring. When no one gives a fuck what you do in your bedroom as long as it's with consenting adults, or what your gender orientation is, or the color of your skin, or whatever.
Try to be a decent human being. Help others if you can. Try to spread happiness and smiles. That's all that matters.
Lovely idea, which I completely agree with, but don't hold your breath.
This.....exactly this
Let's be thankful...for the moment.
Well said, friend.
@Rob Caraher Huh?
"Mayor Pete" is a Veteran, Rhodes Scholar & has Kennedy like charisma. He could be President one day, if some Americans would get over their homophobia.
He will. I will still be alive when it happens, too, I'm pretty sure.
Trans high schooler here, thank you mr. Secretary!
Damn he would have been a great president and hopefully one day he will be
Hope to continue to see Pete in Washington and more people like him! The east coast is and has been falling apart for decades! And our transit & airports are an embarrassment for the taxes we pay, we should have one of the best not worst!
He wants to just be called Pete then okay Pete is a genuine man and he would be great at being president Pete someday as soon as possible. America needs more people like Pete. He could definitely make a positive impact for America in the world as he is already proven to do so and is continuing to do so. Very humble man.
before you do that, go watch what black people in south bend think of him as their mayor. takes seconds to google.
@Florida Violets He is worth reconsidering. In 2012, he ordered 1,000 derelict properties to be torn down, but took years to replace them, in what some city officials called an effort to drive away low-income homeowners. In 2019, the South Bend police fatally and unjustifiably shot a black resident. Buttigieg’s office remained silent on the matter and the incident passed without investigation. His presidential campaign was popular among big tech companies, who threw him that infamous wine cave fundraiser, and he took on several advisors at the recommendation of Mark Zuckerberg. I like the guy, he has his head screwed on straight, but it’s misleading to call him a breath of fresh air. He’s a status quo centrist posing as a reformer. I can see him being chosen as the Democratic candidate in 2028 for being the ‘safe’ option.

As long as those rails don’t go through indigenous land and are eco friendly I’m down.

Exactly
@Jessamyn Rising To electrify, the rails don't need to change but overhead power needs to be installed. Hybrid engines are really only good for yard movement which protects rail workers and surrounding communities from pollution. Battery power isn't scaled up to what's needed to move a whole train yet. Plus, there are many environmental downsides and social justice issues with batteries.
Pete just knows what he's talking about, period. I may not agree wit him 100% of the time, but to deny his intelligence is to deny reality lol.
I learned just how intelligent when he got on Fox multiple times and had their heads spinning in circles when they tried to play "gotccha" when he was campaigning for Biden. Plus he speaks something like 6 languages!
Let's put this in perspective. It's not 1.2 trillion per year, it's 1.2 trillion over 10 years. That's 120 billion per year. If you spent 75% on material goods and supplies and 25% on labor (which is a generous breakdown of how it will get spent) it will mean 400,000 permanent jobs. That seems like a lot, but it's less than were lost during Covid. Also, when you break it down locally - assuming every state gets an equal share (which they won't), it's only 123 good jobs per county. That's nothing. But when you hear people like AOC who said the infrastructure proposal should be 10 times that, everyone scoffed. You can't short change reconstructing an ENTIRE NATION AND IT'S ENERGY GRID.
And let's also put into perspective, they will not pass a 1.2 trillion dollar plan, they will pass an 800 billion dollar plan, meaning even less will get done. Probably 85% will go to carve outs for lobbyist's companies and CEO bonuses and the rest will go toward shoddy lowest bidder contracts rather than actual unionized employees. So at best, expect 40-50 jobs per county.
Also, because it is stretched out over 10 years, it gives plenty of time for the republicans to run on the jobs that got created, even though they voted against them, and then over the next few years dismantle the program so that we don't actually spend that money on infrastructure, we spend it on corporate tax rebates for their billionaire campaign donors.
And let's also put into perspective, we are nickel and diming 0.8 trillion over ten years, but our military will be spending 7.8 trillion over the next 10 years without batting an eye, and will likely see annual budget increases over that time. Who are we at war with? We are spending 50% more than we spent at the HEIGHT of the Iraq war. What for? We've got bridges falling down right down the street from the capital and they STILL won't divert that money to infrastructure. I can understand having a strong military, but at some point if we don't maintain our country what is there to defend? Why are my "freedoms" always hanging out in oil rich nations and needing troops to defend them there?
We should cut the military budget in half AT LEAST, and redirect that money into renewable energy, infrastructure, child care, health care, and education - all of which are jobs that are permanent and cannot be outsources to other countries.
So appreciate Secretary “Mayor” Pete’s easy sense of humor.

Thank you for hosting Secretary Pete Buttigieg! As you know, he is astonishingly brilliant, compassionate, hard-working, creative, and visionary. I look forward to seeing how his future in public service develops.
That´s all true, but why would you call him compassionate? Political decisions are rarely compassionate when you´re a corporate sellout and imperialist.
@@PretenderCS He listens to and observes what people are coping with or in serious need of and works hard to make their lives better in all the ways that he can. For example, when he became aware of the problem of lead pipes that carry water to homes, schools, and other buildings, and saw how this went well beyond the well-documented case in Flint, Michigan, he made the replacement of these pipes around the country a key element of his plans for infrastructure improvement in the new jobs/infrastructure bill. Likewise, as he and his team researched and became more knowledgeable and aware of how previous decisions regarding the location of new highways caused destruction of Black neighborhoods, homes, and businesses, Secretary Buttigieg again made certain that reparations for that danger and inherent racism in the original decision were would knit the split community physically back together, or make connections between neighborhoods possible. In other words, the policies and plans that are key to some of the ways the USDOT respond to the historical and current injustices.

US just started to imagine better infrastructures while China has been on it for decades, because US has been busy engaging in degenerative politics and retrograding ideologies
Perhaps you would like to go live in China since you think it's so great? In China, if you criticized it like this, you would be in prison.
China does megaprojects well but has deep flaws. It's running out of water and chose to do a massive nationwide canal project instead of modernizing farming practices to be more water efficient. The megaproject is cool but it only fixes like 1/5 of the shortage
@@silverforest4682 he said nothing about Chinese speech policy or quality of life. Why is that your reaction? China has massive infrastructure power both domestically and abroad for geo-political reasons. Their domestic shit has nothing to do with what we have to compete with. You are basically ignoring Chinese growth and geo-political moves because it hurts your feelings instead of taking an American attitude and saying "we can do better while still shitting on them for their more oppressive society". Nothing is even partisan about that.
@@doom2avatar And what, exactly, is the US doing to remedy their water shortages, poisonings, and pollutions? I mean, besides selling it off cheaply to bottled water companies?

Too bad 1.2 isn't even a quarter of what we need to really get the infrastructure in this country back to leading the world and not rated d in engineering tests in most categories, literally crumbling bridges dams, some of which have failed, and many more will start too more frequently. Our electric grid is a patchwork of old analog systems fitted with digital systems, old lines, old technology which uses more power than it saves. These structures were designed for forty to fifty years before needing to be replaced or seriously retrofitted, at maximum 70 years, we are at that point, our infrastructure in this country is largely from the WW2 era. There is nothing this country needs more when it comes to safety, innovation, jobs, and becoming once again the leader of the world when it comes to transportation, energy, data, infrastructure.
I wish Stephen Colbert didn't carry water for the establishment. No push back no curiosity. It just is what it is.
Republicans built a worthless fence for $500bil. Really they just wanted to scam the contracts.
Even 12 trillion isn't enough to bring the US up to speed with leading countries in infrastructure like China. And the worse part is that it probably never will since it's likely the presidency will swing back to republicans next term as it gets compounded by the residual economic damage caused by COVID that will slowly come in waves.
I hope AOC and the squad will vote no on this republican water down 1.2 tril.
Especially when republican $2.1 tril tax cuts was pass with no mention of national debts from republicans

ScootMagoot is an internet troll. Pete IS well liked here. And I agree, so great to have someone make infrastructure interesting and top of mind. A lot can be done for climate change, job growth, and economy with these investments.
I think investment in train and light rail are the absolute best things we can spend infrastructure money on. It directly addresses climate change, traffic congestion, housing inequity and the general deterioration of our interstate system by bringing us into the 21st century like every other civilized (and, fuck, not so civilized) country on Earth and have an efficient, modern rail system. Please!
These are important, but we shouldn't forget infrastructure is more than just transportation. The power grid is fragile and insecure, and guaranteeing delivery of clean water is still also needed.
@@ericminch Indeed. You mentioned water, which I totally spaced and whose infrastructure is probably in the worst shape of anything on the table. And whose pricetag alone dwarfs any numbers being batted around on the Hill.
Facts! Japan can do it. Why can’t we?
@@ericminch Need to protect it against cyber war fare!. Lets face it we need a 5 trillion bill for infrastructure.
Pete needs to be our president some day.
Secretary Pete went from being a Rhodes scholar to a roads scholar!
It was a shock for me to find out a while ago that you can't travel around the USA by train. I am so used to having a train station within a couple of miles and to be able to reach any city in Germany from there. Train infrastructure is for me just as important as good roads and to be honest, I don't have a car for 5 years and there wasn't a single time when I missed having a car. I moved into a different apartment during that time and rented a transporter, because even then a small car wouldn't have made sense and I would have had to rent a transporter anyway. A car free society is possible and I am happy that it works in big parts of the country. And many trains are powered by renewable energy, which is another step into the right direction. (You need a working power grid for that though, which I heard is also a problem in the USA.)
No, this system is not perfect and we have a long way to do till every small town is connected to a seamless infrastructure, but I lived in towns not bigger than 100 citizens. The bus ride to the next train station still wasn't longer than 45 minutes. Now I live in a big city and I have subway and train connections 24/7. If I wanted to go from here all the way across the country I could get on a train and do that today.
I positively love and respect Secretary buttigieg, what a wise and comprehensive speaker!
He always makes everything sound much fun and doable
Congratulations yours promo and God bless you with all people
Refreshing to see an intelligent, competent guy who knows what he is doing. He sounds like he is genuinely excited to improve the infrastructure of his country, rather than using the project to boost his own ego.
I am still glad I voted for Pete in the Primaries. I want some one smarter than me in charge of important things.
Stephen, you have the greatest band
Do you know the name of the song they play during his entrance?
@@lordbuddybear "Rubberband Man" by the Spinners. It's a catchy one.
I advise anyone to talk with public works directors about infrastructure, roads, sewers, water, maintenance. The one's I've spoken with have told me that we need to desperately replace and repair lots of under ground pipes. And roads are obviously bad! Real bad! But hey living in a 3rd world country can be fun!
AND as fixing those would create millions of jobs, proving income and increasing tax revenue, creating a huge economic boost, it's difficult to understand why neoliberals always try to stop 'spending'. then you find out that every time public funding is 'cut', it's not 'saved' but instead rerouted to corporations, and suddenly it all starts to make a lot more sense.
pete will be president some day
Lol. No, Platitudes-pete will never be president. Never.
He was a deceptive sellout in the Dem Primary and made most young democrats hate him or at least swear they won’t ever vote for him. Funded by the wealthy and special interests, and a literal establishment puppet during the 2020 Dem primary thru now.
Very well said Mayor… Secretary Pete Buttigieg. I cannot wait!!!!!
We need this mans brain in the White House. He is soon to become the 21 first century Peter the Great !
Intelligence returns to the Whitehouse like a cool salve...aaahhhh!
Secretary Mayor Pete! He is so adorable and smart!
You smiles love @ Natureallmighty
I live 20 mins from Mayor Pete’s town. He couldn’t even fix the roads or highways! 😂😂😂😂🥸🥸🥸🥸🥸🥸🥸
Yeah, right. We were supposed to have high speed rail going from Chicago to Milwaukee 20 years ago!
Pete is a smart thinker. Eloquent and funny!
Secretary Buttigieg or Pete just doesn't sound right. Even when he becames President I will still call him Mayor Pete
He will never be president. He will always be Platitudes-pete.

Stephen’s watch strap is rainbow. Nice nod to the Secretary’s orientation
Well, it IS Pride month...
I’ve seen him wear that band a lot, perhaps he just likes the color?
@@rainbowruler6453 -- I think he's worn it all June for Pride Month.
