  • The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemenlu) addressed the incident where Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan left the room during Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto’s speech at the D-8 Summit in Cairo, Egypt, on Thursday, December 19, 2024. Kemenlu clarified that this was a normal occurrence during international meetings, especially when heads of delegations hold multiple parallel meetings, including bilateral meetings in different rooms. Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Roy Soemirat stated in a written statement on Sunday, December 22, 2024, that the Indonesian delegation could not comment on the schedules of other country’s heads of delegations who may not be able to attend fully. However, Kemenlu ensured that President Prabowo had the opportunity to meet with all heads of other delegations before and after the summit, including the President of Türkiye. Notably, the two leaders met in a cordial atmosphere, sitting close to each other during the luncheon held after the summit. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, along with several other delegates, left the room when Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto delivered a speech at the D-8 Summit on Thursday, December 19, 2024. Erdogan passed Prabowo from behind as he exited the room. Video footage from various media outlets showed several other delegates from other countries who also left the room.
At the 11th Developing Eight (D-8) Summit in Cairo, Egypt, Prabowo emphasized the importance of unity among Muslim-majority countries. He highlighted the fact that the Muslim population worldwide comprises 2 billion people, representing approximately 25% of the global population. Prabowo underscored the significance of close cooperation and a unified voice amidst the internal conflicts prevalent in many Muslim countries.
He stated, “We must work to establish close cooperation among us. We must strive for a single voice and refrain from division.” Prabowo made these remarks during a special session of the 11th D-8 Summit held at the New Administrative Capital Presidential Palace in Cairo, Egypt, on Thursday, December 19, 2024, local time.
Prabowo expressed deep regret for the ongoing conflicts among Muslim countries, particularly in Sudan, Libya, and Yemen. He emphasized that these conflicts hinder collective efforts to support the Palestinian people’s struggle. He pointed out the presence of Muslim leaders fighting Muslim leaders in Libya and Yemen, raising questions about when these conflicts will end and how they can be addressed to help the Palestinian people. If we fight among ourselves, Prabowo expressed deep concern. Moreover, Prabowo underscored that unity is not only crucial for resolving internal conflicts but also essential for confronting global challenges. Consequently, Prabowo urged Muslim countries, including D-8 members, to remain informed about the situation and collaborate effectively. “Indonesia will do its utmost, but I implore unity, cooperation, and for us, Muslim countries, to comprehend the unfolding events,” Prabowo emphasized.
