Please pardon me for just enjoying a tune that I loved, many many years ago (yes I am something of an old lady now). I am not here to judge the composition, the live or studio version - nothing of the sort. I came here to enjoy a particular song, and to thank the kind person who posted it here. *Kiss* to that person. Many thanks!!!!
This is a great song, regardless of what anyone, including certain STYX members might think. It always brings back fantastic memories for me, like the brief period of time I lived in Sadang-gu and hiked every morning in the mountain greenway with the wild groves of camomile flowers. Great song!
GOD i tried SO HARD for YEARS to find this song online .. im so STOKED!! Seen them many, many times over the years but have NEVER heard them do this one. THANK YOU!!!
This is actually a great tune - I'd dare to say the best one of this album! Don't pay attention to the lyrics if you wish, just listen to the music - great arrangement and instrumentation, great vocals!
Totally agree ,the music itself is outstanding regardless of the lyrics. it took me more than 20 years to find out they were singing about something other than some exotic tranquil place in the south of france or somewhere. saw styx on 9-01-2016 i rogers arkansas, they sounded great however played several cover songs that I wasn't interested in. much rather hear captain jonas psalter, grove of eglantine witch wolf or any of the pre 1980's stuff. they also didn't play loreli which I wanted to hear. all in all they have been one of if not my favorite rock band for the last 40 years and happy to have gotten to see them after all these years
Saw them in Racine Wisconsin right before WLS radio in Chicago made Lady a national hit! Think they played entire Styx 2 album which was new that night. Greatest concert i've ever been to.
My favorite Styx song and favorite Styx album. I think Equinox is the best album, and is my second favorite. Styx was never the same after John Curulewski left.
I grew up with this album. Giving me goose bumps thinking about a time we had our whole lives in front of us, and now for some of us, that life is over. In memory of my youth ... "just south of man's delight".
this album by far the best album by styx it just kicks ass damn i miss the 70's i got to see styx in the houston summit arena in 1979 , just blew me away woke up two days later outside chicago's paradise theater by luck aint that something wow.
I have always liked this song and for the better part all of their Wooden Nickel contributions. Timeless track with such great elements like the harpsichord start. There is nothing I don't like about this song but love most Chucks bass guitar and having had one myself it is unmistakably a Rickenbacker 4001.
I remember listening to this song on headphones as a kid, and you can dimly hear what sounds like a woman's shocked gasp in the background after Dennis sings "You're a wicked wench." Or it's a accidental sound artifact that worked out nicely.
I hear it now too, but I think he says "ha!" while the gasp is still going. So I think it really is someone gasping, or maybe a reverse cymbal that wound up in the mix. I never noticed it before.
Hey you there Cast an eye this way You with that young lust virgin smile Don't pretend that you're quickly melting before my eyes That's a lie 'cause I see all of you Quite clearly now I like our looks your moves you know everything So when I ring you up in the evening I shall meet you In the grove of eglantine Just south of man's delight Close to a soft flowing stream In the grove of eglantine We will join as lovers might Between the lines of a dream Your magic lips Have made me realize All of the pleasures man can fantasize So don't pretend that you're sad to see me say goodbye That's a lie You're a wicked wench...ha But thanks for all the laughs You and your young lust virgin smile And when I'm gone for awhile I'll once more want to meet you In the grove of eglantine Just south of man's delight Close to a soft flowing stream In the grove of eglantine We will join as lovers might Between the lines of a dream In the grove of eglantine Just south of man's delight Close to a soft flowing stream In the grove of eglantine We will join as lovers might Between the lines of a dream In eglantine...of a dream (fade
This song reminds me of “Time Was”, the opener of the Wishbone Ash album *Argus.* Wonder if the Styx members had just listened to that album when Dennis wrote this song.
Check out "OWE" (One With Everything) which is a Styx tribute band who plays a LIVE VERSION of this song which can be seen on youtube! It's the first time it was ever played live apparently and they do an amazing job with it!
+Vaelsung1 Love the singers animation, they did a great job. This whole album is awesome. I was 14 when I bought it at "Believe In Music" Grand Rapids, MI.
.....are you familiar with kundalini yoga, Mathis? Your conclusion about "Eglantine' being just SLIGHTLY salacious, is spot-on - but the album's title, which I think was presented to them by Chuck Lofrano as I seem to remember, has much greater implications (only the FIRST of several albums and songs to reference it, followed by EWF's "Serpentine Fire", Duran's "Union Of The Snake" and Seven & The Ragged Tiger, then Love And Rockets' "Kundalini Express"....)
I think they gradually phased most of the Wooden Nickel songs out of their sets after signing with A&M. Also, i think they essentially disowned this album which is why you probably never hear it. Not sure exactly why though because this had some of their best and overall most creative material.
This song would definitely have sexual innuendos. Not sure why some dislike it? To those who dislike, I would say move on to something you like and give them credit for what you like. Let's all stay positive.
Was introduced to this back in what 73? by a Chicago resort salesman, didn't know what the lyrics meant back then, yeah sheltered and naive. LOL.. Anyway it was my pleasure to turn all my country friends in SWMO on to this hard rockin band. I understand the band HATES this album. Don't understand why, its not polished or a masterpiece by any means, STILL I LIKE IT!!

This song is nothing about sex.. Its about two individuals meeting to cultivate a garden of specific Roses(Englantine)...Her knowing everything and her magic lips have to do with her knowledge of planting the garden and telling him how it is done...And yet at some point she got mad and left because of something he did, said or maybe the lack of knowledge in cultivating the garden and then he got mad in return hoping that she would return... Christ!...Doesnt anyone do any research when it comes to the premise of a song?...Sheesh!
Tommy Shaw and Dennis DeYoung were a great team until Tommy gave Dennis a hard time about writing the songs Babe, The first time, and writing the albums, Paradise Theater and Kilroy Was Here. Then Tommy Shaw ruined it for Dennis in 1983 at the end of their Kilroy Was Here Tour instead of having a big meeting with the band and their manager.
Oh my gawd - what a terrible song. Still, nobody else but Styx could have ever written the line "You're a wicked wench - hah!" They deserve some kind of perverse admiration for this.
To paul davison how wrong u are they owned the radio 8 top 10 billboard smashes and the 1st band to have 4 triple platinum lps in a row they also were named the most favorite band in the usa 2yrs in a row top that!
what an awesome song, so obscure and unrecognized by the majority except for true styx fans like me

You would think a tremendous song like this, devoted to lady bits, would have more than 64K views in 11 years.
Bass and rhythm guitar make the song absolutely killer. And there is no STYX without Dennis DeYoung. PERIOD.
Well, to be fair, there is a cover band nowadays.
Larry Gowan!
@@ianstuart5660 Larry who?A wannabe.
Amen!STYX is dead now-but their music lives on.
@@russellmarsden6316 Larry Gowan has been the Styx lead vocalist for many years!
This is a great song, regardless of what anyone, including certain STYX members might think. It always brings back fantastic memories for me, like the brief period of time I lived in Sadang-gu and hiked every morning in the mountain greenway with the wild groves of camomile flowers. Great song!
@Alias Fakename Perhaps...But still great...BTW...how da fuq did you find this???
GOD i tried SO HARD for YEARS to find this song online .. im so STOKED!!

Maybe you already know...the lyrics are about a woman's private regions. ;)
All of this old styx stuff is extremley heavy. I LIKE IT
Saw them in Racine Wisconsin right before WLS radio in Chicago made Lady a national hit! Think they played entire Styx 2 album which was new that night. Greatest concert i've ever been to.
My high school days thank you Dennis and Tommy and the rest of styx for bringing back those sweet memories
Carlos Reyes Tommy wasn't in the band when this song came out.
I like when Dennis DeYoung sings, "You're a Wicked Wench....HA! That is so much his style. Extreme theatrics. I really love this song.
My favorite Styx song and favorite Styx album. I think Equinox is the best album, and is my second favorite. Styx was never the same after John Curulewski left.
Another underrated heavy hitter from the lads.
Damn, I miss those good ol' days of the 70's....
TRUE rock musicians and songs....none of
this crappy rap/hip-hop "entertainers" of today.
A great song by a great 70's group.
They don't write'em like that anymore.
I grew up with this album. Giving me goose bumps thinking about a time we had our whole lives in front of us, and now for some of us, that life is over. In memory of my youth ... "just south of man's delight".
Good old-fashion white-boy Rock-n-Roll......none of today's "music" can
hold a candle to this classic!!
yes sir
this album by far the best album by styx it just kicks ass damn i miss the 70's i got to see styx in the houston summit arena in 1979 , just blew me away woke up two days later outside chicago's paradise theater by luck aint that something wow.
naw,Grand Illusion is better.
I can only describe their Early sound as a magical mystery maybe fable type music. But we loved it. Dennis was a master of these songs.
Good memories of this in high school in the '70s.
So comforting just like good old days. They play like this anymore....what a pity....damm gona miss good music
One of my college turntable favorites!
AWESOME!
one of the best tunes they ever did .
Totally agree.
"But thanks for all the laughs!" Had 8-track, Best of Styx 72-74. Great Stuff.
I love the lyrics , had this cassette tape and now have the original LP
had the 8 track best of styx and thanks for all the laughs mr. Dennis de young good ole memories from my high school freshman year

Hey you there
Cast an eye this way
You with that young lust virgin smile
Don't pretend that you're quickly melting before my eyes
That's a lie
'cause I see all of you
Quite clearly now
I like our looks your moves you know everything
So when I ring you up in the evening I shall meet you
In the grove of eglantine
Just south of man's delight
Close to a soft flowing stream
In the grove of eglantine
We will join as lovers might
Between the lines of a dream
Your magic lips
Have made me realize
All of the pleasures man can fantasize
So don't pretend that you're sad to see me say goodbye
That's a lie
You're a wicked wench...ha
But thanks for all the laughs
You and your young lust virgin smile
And when I'm gone for awhile
I'll once more want to meet you
In the grove of eglantine
Just south of man's delight
Close to a soft flowing stream
In the grove of eglantine
We will join as lovers might
Between the lines of a dream
In the grove of eglantine
Just south of man's delight

very cool that you shared this, thank you :)
THIS SONG REMINDS ME OF THE BAND TRIUMPH
mario Hinojosa Maybe Triumph reminds you of Styx since this was out way before Triumph.
Such a beautiful name.
Una delle mie preferite del disco con piano e mellotron a creare atmosfere suggestive ma anche con una certa carica hard rock
This song reminds me of “Time Was”, the opener of the Wishbone Ash album *Argus.* Wonder if the Styx members had just listened to that album when Dennis wrote this song.

I love the word "wench"🙂
Perfect progressive rock tune.
HOLY CRAP!!! After 30 years I JUST got what this song is about!!! The serpent is rising (if you know what I mean)!

A song for Suzanne was also one of Styx's early masterpieces. It was about his wife. Dennis that is
I interviewed Dennis last month and told him this was one of my favourite Styx songs. He laughed and thanked me. Interview is on www.rocktopia.co.uk
Still a classic ‘70’s Wooden Nickel label song. Why Styx has never played it live is beyond me!
it's high school days then she used to be mine - think about it - it was days lost
forever- when was there ....
Some nice prog elements in this song. I can hear bits of Renaissance and ELP in it.
This song would definitely have sexual innuendos. Not sure why some dislike it? To those who dislike, I would say move on to something you like and give them credit for what you like. Let's all stay positive.
WOW!
OK, something I have wondered since I first heard this song. Where the hell is "south of man's delight"?
Another allusion to those lines of a dream. Haha!
mella mell Think 'south of the border' on a woman. ;) Yes, it's about a vagina.
anguitenens4003 That idea did occur to me, but it doesn’t really make sense. But it sounds good as a line.
...especially like that piano solo about 2/3 way through!
Amazing song and the only song I like from The Serpent Is Rising.
Touché. Maybe also King Diamond.
YES!!!!!!

There should be a rap version called The Grove of Enwordtine lol

Your "magic lips""??? as in Labia majora:?
At 2:18 and 2:30, domo arigato!!!!
@Fuzzintor101 Fuck the meaning; GOOD MUSIC FTW!
this tune only rivaled by the grand illusion
Is he singing about poon tang, or do I just have a dirty mind?
@Fuzzintor101 also, I tried looking up the meaning of the song, but found nothing. Does the Grove of Eglantine elude to the gooch?
Damn these guys sound like ZON, lol.
Oh I think Jethro Tull could have written and used it, and probably did.
@boredom847 That's hot. This song is also hot. Coincidence?
As far as i'm concerned Tommy Shaw has NEVER been in Styx!
THIS IS STYX! TOMMY SHAW RUINED IT!
Tommy Shaw and Dennis DeYoung were a great team until Tommy gave Dennis a hard time about writing the songs Babe, The first time, and writing the albums, Paradise Theater and Kilroy Was Here.
