- January 14, 1964: Videotaping of both the dress rehearsal (from 5:30 to 7 p.m.) and the final performance (from 9 to 10:30 p.m.) of "Episode Eighteen" of "The Judy Garland Show," at CBS Television City, Stage 43, Hollywood.
The show had been on a holiday break since December 23, 1963, and had just resumed rehearsals on January 11th.
Judy's guests were Martha Raye, Peter Lawford, Rich Little, and Ken Murray. Judy sang: "76 Trombones"; "I'm Old Fashioned" (part of a sketch with Lawford); "Glenn Miller Medley" (with Raye, the dress rehearsal performance was used for the broadcast); "Hit Parade 1964" with Ray and Lawford; "All Alone"; and "Oh Lord, I'm On My Way." The latter two were part of the "Trunk" segment. It was originally planned for Judy to sing "Just You, Just Me" but she dropped that, on camera, saying "Let's not do the fast one."
Judy also taped a segment featuring impressionist Rich Little singing "The Man That Got Away" as different famous stars and another segment of "Ken Murray and His Hollywood Home Movies."
This episode aired on January 26, 1964, just after the annual broadcast of "The Wizard of Oz."
We all know what a talent Judy was. Let’s just take a moment to celebrate Martha Raye.
Absolutely ... and, to think, they shared a husband!
Oh they were great together!! Glad to see them having fun!
Two great, unique talents.
martha had a nice voice..to bad she had to hide behind..her comedy face.
I think her reply to that was that she played nightclubs in a solo act, started in vaudeville, they gave what she thought the audience expected; it was her bread and butter for a long time. She was also wise with saving money.
Judy is ofc amazing, but I hope y'all ain't sleepin on Martha Raye here--much better voice than I ever had a clue of. Anyone who can give-and-take w Judy gets a gold star.
I always thought Martha Raye was hilarious, but I didn't remember that she could sing that well. I really enjoyed seeing and hearing this.
I was pleasantly surprised, too.
Martha Rays actually had a really solid voice. She sounds great.
She was a band singer before she was scouted for Hollywood
If you think this is impressive, search "Martha Raye scat singing".
@@Dunstlookalike Going right now to find "Martha Ray scat singing"...
@@patrickweyland-smith1023 That would explain a lot! Not an easy job, I know :))
She's even better plural!
Watching this with a huge smile throughout. Wish they were paired more often, they really are having a blast, and the chemistry is palpable. Love hearing/seeing clips of Judy laughing, she really let it rip!
Totally agree 💜
Met Martha Raye in Saigon in line at the commissary. She and Bob Hope were in line with the rest of us soldiers. She had on a uniform.
She was a nurse who was also decorated for her service in WW2
If you don't mind me asking, what year was that?
My dad won a Army Special Forces (Green Beret) soldier of the year award in 1973 in SoCal (Los Alamitos Air Station). Martha was at the award ceremony but then came back to my parent's house for drinks after. I was 7-8 years old and she found out we had a cat and wanted to see it (she was also famous as an animal lover) -- so she came into my (messy) bedroom to meet our cat Tigger.
Not many can say they had Martha Raye in their bedroom! ;-)
It's unfathomable to me that this caliber of a show was ever ever WEEKLY fare. Classy and fun and bursting with life.
Quite intriguing how two wonderful and talented ladies with simple attire; no background singers or dancers, are more entertaining and charismatic than any entertainer today, i was literally smiling thru the entire performance!
This was incredible. How unfortunate are those who will never experience such entertainment. I was born in 1980 and am ever so grateful to have had parents that really enjoyed this type of entertainment. I adore it.
Didn’t think anyone could give Judy a run for her money, but Martha is a revelation! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Martha kept messing it up on purpose but such a good duet
There's a video of Martha imitating Judy singing Over The Rainbow
actually there were a number of performers gave Judy a run for her money. You just did not realize it. When a performer like Lena Horne or Peggy Lee were on the show, they also gave her a run for their money, but you do not realize it, what you do notice is a much more energized Judy giving us everything and then some because she was singing with someone worthy of how good she was/is/and will always be. Judy was highly competitive, and to get the best out of her, you surround her with the best and watch her soar. Compared to acts like the Dillards (also on the show), where you see her going through the motions so to speak.
A very funny and entertaining duet by two entertainers, Martha Raye, an off beat comedienne, and Judy Garland, a dramatic singer. The combination is unique, a treasure.
I adored Martha Rae when I was a kid. She was a great talent and her voice was wonderful. I miss those old days here at 75 years of age. So glad I was born in 1948.😊
Judy is hilarious while maintaining that beautiful voice. ❤️
Sat on a barstool next to Martha Rae in Laguna beach and never laughed so much, before I left I got an autograph for my mom
Martha "Maggie" Raye was a fascinating woman. Her biography is a must read.
Thanks. I will check it out.
I just love the authenticity of Martha Ray!
Given all the constant emotional turmoil in Judy Garland's life it's so refreshing to see her laugh and get outside of herself.
Judy, according to those close to her, had a whacky sense of humor. Apparently, she enjoyed a laugh and was fun to be around. Yes, she had emotional struggles (doesn’t everyone) but she is not the tragic figure many people attribute to her.
So funny and you really feel like this is the real Judy Garland ♥️
Wow their voices just meld into each other. I love it.
Looks like they had a lot of fun. Awesome.
This duo worked very well together. Garland was a perfect fit for Raye's comedic ways.
Martha Raye's comedy style reminds me of Carol Burnett
Yes! She's a total ham.
Burnett was a fan of Martha and recorded an album with her.
For me it's more like Carols style reminds me of Martha's and Lucy's.
Two professionals who both grow up in Vaudeville.
Ms Raye’s roots in vaudeville are v obvious she needed to rein in the mugging for the small screen
Martha has such melotic vibrato, so classy and goofy. Judy loved her ❤
Ms Raye was a 1940s legend in her own right, which the generation taking this show in would certainly know. No trouble holding her own here. She used to do a brilliant Judy Garland impersonation as a part of her act as well. Such talented women-and that band!
They sure had a good time together, trying to to trip each other up. It's a real hoot !
What an amazing pair of talents. They both played off of each other just brilliantly!
I must confess I can't watch the new Judy movie getting a Best Actress Oscar when the lady herself so deserved the award. Love Judy Garland.
The movie was awful.Judy deserves so much better.
Darwin, I understand what you mean. BUT Judy Garland is more famous with anyone over 30 than Renee Zellweger. Yes--- Judy Garland was very deserving of acclaim. It is unfortunate that the acclaim came after her death. But it is acclaim nonetheless, and I would imagine that even Zellweger would admit Judy is a Star with a CAPITAL S while Renee's star is somewhat smaller, regardless of the Oscar.
I thought the movie was ok, I did a good job really digging in to Judy’s life, but the singing was terrible, it didn’t capture Judy one bit.
2 dazzling dames swinging down memory lane.
Martha Raye was a registered surgical nurse and more than once she used this knowledge when she was overseas entertaining the troops with the USO.
God bless her.
Oh, when Judy sings "At last, my love has come along" at 2:36 . It's so beautiful and timeless, it sends shivers down my spine.
Wow, that Martha Raye could sing.
I know she played for laughs but Martha had a voice....
Martha’s voice was equal to Judy’s but she had a different persona.
Martha Ray was such a lovable ham and Darling Judy,, this was much fun ,
One of my fav duet from the show. They're dressed like average ladies of their generation just cranking out the sweetest Glenn Miller medley
Definitely enjoyed watching two great and very talented ladies.
my goodness, what performers ! They put America's Got Talent nowhere ...
I wonder if Martha's complaints about her head hurting could have something to do with drinking a little more Blue Nun with Judy than she had bargained for. All and all the comedic antics and musical talents utilized in this medley by both ladies are nothing short of stellar!
Two of the best! So glad I grew up in the 60s and 70s. Real talent back then.
Im jealous! I wanted to be around from the 40s-on! I hate my era. I came in the 80s instead. But I am an old soul heart 😊
Me too!!
I had no idea Martha sang ... pretty amazing performance
What a hoot! Great entertainment from great entertainers. Loving this.
Judy and guests. Some of the best ever entertainment.
Sounded good together
People forget or never knew what a formidable jazz singer Martha Raye was. She was right up there with the best of her day. (Singing opposite Judy Garland? Not a problem.) Her comedy and schick often overshadowed her vocal prowess. Her singing was almost incidental to her acting. Anita O'Day said to Dick Cavett on his show that Martha's singing was big influence on her.
Judy lived only 5 more years. I was a my father's golf club on Sunday morning , June 21, 1969, when announcer played a spiritual song by Judy and then announced she had died. What a performer. Dead at 47. Too sad.
I was riding on the NY subway to work in Manhattan and saw the front page of the NY Post...Judy Garland dead at 47...
Absolutely fun & talent to boot! Such a travesty that we don’t have this kind of entertainment anymore.
As hilarious as this is, I’d love to have seen the rehearsal
According to Coyne Steven Sanders' book, this was the rehearsal. The "final number" wasn't as good as this one, they couldn't top the magic, so they decided to use this instead ☺️.. 💜🌿
this is great but judy looks tired but martha is funny
I have a great fascination with the Judy Garland show. Great stuff!
Love them both❤
I'm LIVING for Judys hair in this-
Love both of these classical ladies. ❤
You had to know how to keep up or get out of the way with Martha Raye or you'd get run over, and Judy had the stuff.
I heard someone say once (it may have been Red Skelton, or another comedian) "When you work with Martha, you have to go Martha's way." Sometimes she couldn't read the cue cards and whatnot, but she tried to play to it, I think. I think Martha played well with Carol Burnett because at the time their "Chops" with honed.
Wish judy could have seen Liza get her Oscar for Cabaret
OMG!!!❤️❤️❤️
this is so cool!!! They play off each other and still can laugh!
Judy and Martha, who knew she could sing like that, together. What a treat!!!!!!
Martha was a terrific singer. She could have been a top-notch jazz vocalist had she chosen that path. Too bad she didn't make more recordings.
I so agree! I have a cd of hers with the song “ Gone with the wind” and I wish she was more of a recording artist than a
comedienne.
Two Great Ones!
Amazing woman! I wish she were still alive.
I've never heard Martha Raye Sing before, shes got a beautiful voice & I like her impression of Judy Garland.
Absolutely wonderful classic memories ❤️⭐️⭐️I’m now 58 and my Nana loved both these ladies and taught me in the 1970’s who Martha was 💎💎
Such talent that you won't find today.
Omg I enjoyed that.
A powerful duo! Love this and their chemistry is great.
Martha Raye was a huge influence on one of jazz's great singers, Anita O'Day.
If you hear Martha sing Over the Rainbow, she let everybody know....
Martha Raye really hams it up in this dress rehearsal, bahahaha!!! 🤣
It's funny they were both married to the same man, songwriter David Rose. He married Judy after he was divorced from Martha. They look like they are having a ball. I never really knew that Martha could sing like that, I knew her from the old denture commercials when she made fun of her big mouth lol. So I always thought she was just a comedian, but she's got an impressive boys, especially holding our own next Judy Garland.
SO EASY AND CHARMING.. rAYE WAS A GENIUS
Love these two talents together🎶
Love this
Didnt know Martha could sing so well!
Happy birthday Judy!!
Love them!! Amazing! Hilarious!
I adore Martha Raye! That's hilarious rubber face of hers is incredible.😂❤
I will never get enough of this! So much talent between the two of them!
Two 'born in a trunk' gals. Martha Raye was born in Butte, Montana where her vaudeville parents were playing.
I have not smiled and laughed at a UA-cam video in a long time. Loved it
I loved loved loved her in Alice.
I loved her as the Polident lady!
Back when singers could actually sing, and were great entertainers too.
I didn't realize Martha was so short. Great voices both of them.
Excelentes Cantantes...muy simpáticas y grandes amigas..saludos
Martha was such a hoot!
are they lip singing when they do these songs on the judy garland show back then?
I don’t know about the rest of them, but they definitely aren’t in this one 🤷♂️
I never realized how much they sound alike.
@4:05 wow!
this is magical! made my day
I always wished Martha Raye would stop her constant mugging so we could enjoy her performances. She was very talented but I could never get through her facial expressions.
Two Gorgeous lady's,making me "wanna get happy" ../thanks Judy/❤❤
I take that Ms Raye was a comedienne- she seems too big for TV - good voice tho and JG not in particularly good voice here
Listen to Judy laughing off-camera at 4:41.
Judy Garland!🌈 Wow! I don't know the other lady! I see her name. I don't know of her? 👯
For me, Martha Ray will always be Madame Bonheur.
Wow, Martha Raye is shorter than Judy?!
Me encantaría este tipo de comedia en la tv latinoamericana, pero todo es muy obsceno🤮
great clip. both of them look like they are having a ball
This always makes me smile 💜
What do Judy and Martha say to each other at about 1:17? Never been able to make it out!
"Say..."
"Listen!"
It rules hahaha
