The Apprehension Engine - Horror sounds for 2019

- I've been doing lots of experimenting on the Apprehension Engine over the past couple of years. Here are some cool, and hopefully slightly disturbing sounds I've come up with.
Good use of a lollipop
Is it just me, or is the lollipop handle/stick unusually long?
@@zeicanofficial oh yeah definitely, it's long
Actually it's a friction mallet. Clearly it bears more than a passing resemblance to a lollipop though!
@@indiefilmandmusic So how many licks till the center of that one then?
@@sideoutside woah 3 likes as in one tohoo tethreee!!!
I really, really wish you would make an entire album with this instrument. I am utterly fascinated by this piece of macabre art and think a whole album would be a massive hit.
The Witch and The Lighthouse soundtracks. Both films were scored by mark korven with the apprehension engine
Both soundtracks are absolutely amazing and equally ominous
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre game soundtrack is an entire album mostly made with this instrument.
My names for them:
0:00 Cows
0:52 Abyss
1:48 Industry
2:32 Broadcast
3:22 Mines
4:19 Combination
5:40 Amazon
6:07 Drum
6:20 House
6:46 Crypt
7:16 Astro
These titles are great. They really do feel like a set of individual songs. (I don't get the title "Combination". For me it really doesn't quite capture the enormity of the sound he is creating for that song, but I'm curious to hear your reasoning for that name.)
Well done. Love Industry as a name. So fitting!

@@sewerbooze3151 Good names.
I'm like "this is kind of pleasing like a weird asmr"
4:18 GET TO THE BOMB SHELTER
Honestly it does sound really unpleasantly nice? I really don’t know how to describe it but I like it
STUKA!!
Look it's a bird ITS a plane* suddenly explode*
sounds like that stock inception noise that plays in almost every movie at first and then it becomes something you'd hear in silent hill 1
I love how quite a bit of the music made on the Apprehension Engine sounds like Trent Reznor's work. You guys should totally collaborate on a soundtrack for a horror film, or even an album. That would be absolutely amazing
Lol !,I was just thinking the same thing before I read this, that Trent Reznor should incorporate this into the next NIN album : )
Umbrella Archives Trent has one of these.
Go see the VVITCH. The engine was specially made for that movie.
1:33
A large ship comes from afar among the fog in the middle of the ocean at midnight
CAPTAIN !!!
What?
LOOK out!
The new Pink Floyd album sounds great 👍👍
kartik pant the album is called Bloody Strings on a wing
0:01 sounds like Satan laughing at one really funny joke
Lmao 😂😂😂
Simply, a tremendous and great accomplishment of pure genius.
Thanks!
When I first saw Cube back in the day I remember sitting during the end credits and being struck by the genius of your soundtrack. I thought to myself I've never heard anything so rich in atmosphere. So glad to stumble upon this randomly many years later and see my intuition was right and you went on to do things like this. And I think I'll keep getting back to Cube soundtrack forever...
Thanks so much for the kind words!
I hope/wish something like this will be used in the "Uzumaki" adaptation on Toonami next year
hey man don't discount Colin stetson! he did the music for hereditary and it sounds like he's gonna do a fine job.
@@Amangiechsin Absolutely. That is so cool.
god I have been listening to this for the past hour. My heart rate is up, goosebumps all over my skin and greatest of all, -I'm in the darkness of the night-.
great stuff! got me into horror now.
Me: Can I have your lollipop
Him: No I already used it
What do you mean by used it?
Him:
4:18 sounds like war of the worlds
Its a fuck bomber !!!!!!!
The electric bow sounds a lot like sounds from 2016's DOOM.
4:54 legit reminds me of the speeder chase from Attack of the Clones.
This is surprisingly very relaxing
"So, I'm in a band."
"Oh, cool! What instrument do you play?"
"The Nightmare Box."
I friggin love this stuff. I already made use of some samples of yours to create my own soundeffects for tabletop rpg atmosphere.
6:20 punched me in the face and instantly made me remember the modern godzilla remake, it sounded so similar
This video sound like a good time in the dorm next door in the beginning.
I really just need this for my Call of Cthulhu games.
6:20 i open my door, when i go in toilet night))))))))
Very cool device with an amazing range of scary sounds! I heard this on CBC radio yesterday and had to look it up.
I am so very glad I have discovered this amazing channel with all of your music and creations! I am currently creating a non commercial unmonitized stop motion film for my UA-cam channel and I was just wondering if I would be able to sample some of the sounds you have created? Fully Credited in the credits of course! Please please answer.
I heard that Jesper Kyd (pretty well known video game composer) used this in the soundtrack of Warhammer End Times Vermintide (particularly the track The Skaven Come to Play) and what a fascinating intrument
absolutely in love with this, is there any quality version for some producers out there?
These sounds make me happy
A rosin lollipop? This instrument is one of the coolest things ever.
Friction mallet. They're awesome.
So I just found ear-porn. Thank you.
THIS THING COULD SCARE THE HELL OUT OF VINCENT PRICE !
Amazing sound as always Mark 😁
Thanks so much!

Awesome job! I subscribed after hearing the first video! Just curious what processing and recording equipment/software/effects you're using on this. It sounds fantastic!
Beginning of the vid deadass sounded like something from Nine Inch Nails.
Pure art... How about some horror creepy psytrance out of this?
ASMR was the gateway drug to this...
I can't love this enough
hey mister Korven, I just saw the lighthouse recently and wanted to thank you for another phenomenal soundtrack! I absolutely adore the sound design of it all. I have a few questions regarding the use of the apprehension engine: when you use it, is there a certain type of music theory or key in mind before it's utilized, or do you apply all that after you've accomplished the type of sound scape with it? a lot of the sounds produced definitely seem atonal, but I know you're a multi instrumentalist, so I'm sure that there's a greater amount of detail at hand that I can't pinpoint.
Hi! Glad you enjoyed The Lighthouse. The apprehension engine is a playground for me, so I essentially turn off the music theory side of my brain. There's probably subliminal stuff going on in my head, but mostly I'm just having fun inventing.
@@indiefilmandmusic Interesting! Another quick question or two, if you don't mind humoring me. The score to The Lighthouse feels very driven by brass, so was that actual brass being played or was it the noise of that special mallet against the wood with certain tweaks to make it sound like brass but unique on its own? and if you were the one that was behind that constant foghorn sound during the movie, how did the creation of that sound come about?
I'm a big fan of experimental sound design in music and make music myself, so I'm keen to soak up all the knowledge I can get/ Thanks for your time, sir!
@@Amangiechsin. Yes, that was a very large brass section. There was some midi samples embellishments as well. Cheers.
Garfield on a monday
I absolutely adore this. I love creepy shit, and this is like... Horror ASMR. This should be a thing. The ingenuity of this machine is just... I adore it. I won't pretend to know all the technical stuff that goes into it, but the WAY it's played is clever as hell.
You've managed to create something truly unique and experimental! As a filmmaker, I am curious if you would allow the use of this / sampling the sounds in a non commercial short film?
A little off topic but do you read sheet music. I’m an aspiring composer and I don’t and I wondered if you did and how useful or necessary you think it is in your field of work.
Hi Zachary. I do a lot of horror scores these days, and reading is not really necessary for me at all, because of my chaotic style. That said, I do read, and can orchestrate, etc, and this was very useful to me in my earlier, more melodic days of my career! Good luck.
INDIE FILM MAKER thank you 👍🏻
The section starting at 6:48 is unbelievable. Sounds like otherworldly speech.
That was an absolute delight.
This is so good to listen to
You're Mike Fucking Korven! I just realized, I've been looking for your channel for some time.
Huge fan! I would love to hear the Nighmare Machine in person.
in wish i'd sit in a dark close room, hear some voices in my head, cannot escape and a 10h version of this is running on repeat forever.
that is literal hell
The first 50 seconds is just some kind of unsettling monster moans
me : picks up a snack at 1 am in the kitchen and accidently closes the drawer too hard
what my mom hears : 2:10
so alien tried abducting you but satan remembers you stole that one lollipop from the candy store, as you are ascending to the bright spaceship you notice a ravine forming from the ground under you. You see flames and lava emerge from the ground with a giant red hand reaching out to grab you, instead of grabbing you it grabs the space ship and throws it 100 miles from the current location. You drop down 18 ft and survive, crippled you watch as satan climbs up the ravine and onto the earths surface. You hear what sounds like an airplane but what you actually see was the mothership that controlled the little spaceship. A space capsule launched from the side of the mothership and crash landed right next to you. The door of the space capsule opened and you see a giant green space monster climb out of the capsule. The space monster had green goo pouring from its mouth that almost hit you, satan rushes toward the space monster and a collosal battle happened right before your eyes. All of a sudden you see light coming from the clouds and you try to cover it with your hands to shield your eyes, a sword drops down from the heavens and lands next to you. A note came with the sword saying this, ¨this is the excalibur for i trust you with it to slay the gods in front of you -love god." The second you grab the sword wings of angel sprouted from your back and armor appeared onto your body that was light as a feather, The scene ends with the 2 giants in the background while you are the small body under them ready to become a godslayer.
This sounds like an anime that I'd definitely watch.
@@That_One_Guy_In_A_Band Not gonna lie, I would totally watch this.
@@GooseGodGeb same! If only making a show wasn't so complicated.
Nice
Thanks!
Every one gangsta untill the demons start playing instruments
Superb. How do you setup the delay unit for endless loopinp?
I use 3 Boss loop pedals. One for rhythmic, one for ambience, and one for the E-bow/guitar string.
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre game is gonna be sick.
I'm assuming it's a rubber ball with a handle attached righ? Not a lollipop...
Right. They're called friction mallets. They're basically a superball on a stick. So much fun.
Imagine pranking someone with that i would get a heart attack.
Hi, could I use some audio snippets from this video to Terror Dance-Video?
Coolest instrument ever 🥰
these relax me ^^
May I use some of the sound of this machine in my music? I only do non profit stuff and I'm fine with some youtube quality samples. Even tho I would really love to have something like this awesome instrument to do some high quality recordings myself.
I want one of these engines!
*Insidious has entered the chat*
what dope ass machine.
I was just trying to sleep!!!!!!!
ill have a good night with wonderful dreans
Totally cool..endless sounds
For those who can't read the stickers on the side:
"This is what I sound like playing any instrument"
"Sounds like shit"
"Disturbing, will it not make a happy sound?
"LEAVE ME ALONE!!!"
"This is the type of shit my neighbor would buy"
"MY WIFE MAKES SCARIER SOUNDS"
"I want to break it"
Ah yes....these are some of my favourite youtube comments!
So many sounds with just a lolipop!
4:20 perfect.
Wait until they start making rap songs with this
That's a great job !! I'm feeling like lost in a horror movie !
Would it be possible to use a little part of this sound in a short horror film ? With my cousin we are trying to do some little video so there is no profit or anything else. Thank you !

Андрей Пупкин reminds me very much of War of the Worlds remake
@@marcus4628 War Of The Worlds, or world war Z? when filmed?

Its almost like the inception noise...
At the end of the movie "life: vida inteligente", a very similar soundtrack is heard
Every once in a while, he'll hit a note just right/wrong and my teeth will hurt.
Little nightmare vibes✨
my ears are bleeding from this LOL 2:56
Such an awsome machine. I would live to get one to freak out my nighbours at night🤣. Or just to play and experiment with sound
This is awesome!
Thanks!
3:24 sounds like a movie where a guys daughter gets killed somewhere in snow by some long nail I think
Where do I get one 🤔
the 2nd one sounds like Moon Dog's first record!
We like it.
4:18 I picture being a human and a WW2 Bomber drops a bomb
so is there delay or a looper pedal? 🍻
Yes, I use three boss looping pedals.
There's a certain part here where it sounds like the background music for an FPS stealth mission
0:50 and 1:50 remind me of a horror game I played once, you where a detective in it
Creepiest one : 4.20
5:13 that’s sirenhead
2:21 my nightmares be like

At 4:41 what is the device with the blue lights...
Hi Michael. It's called an E-bow. It's typically used by guitarists for a sustain effect.
@@indiefilmandmusic oh okay, I love the effect it has with the engine...thank you for the quick response... this really gives me more inspiration for a script I'm working on...
@@draconus003 Great to hear!
Dont mean to disrespect, I make the same sounds with anything close to my desk, just need twilight and silence... and I call it "The bluff"
All I hear is that switch at the top left of the box. _click.. clock.. click.. clock.. click.. clock..click_

Please give one to Stu Mackenzie
How is called that electronic device at 2:38?
