  • Dreaming of meeting, falling in love, marrying an incredible Thai girl and moving to Thailand!
But wait, what’s that going to cost? How can I afford to retire early with a good standard of living in a house in Bangkok!!!
It’s really not that hard, you just have to live like a Thai. Shop where the Thais shop, eat what the Thais eat and stop hanging out in bars. Simple.
You may have to give up the odd 1 or 2 things that you’re used to having, but what the hell, you’re not working and you’re living in Thailand.
We hope that you enjoyed watching this video.

enjoyed your video. What are you paying for medical insurance per month? Can you use your U.S. medical plan over there?

The cost of your insurance will really depend on your age. You won't be able to us your standard US medical insurance in Thailand.
The following videos detail what I did.

Feminism has destroyed 99.9% of western women. I don't see any disrespect in this woman's eyes. What I do see is genuine happiness and innocence. You are a lucky man.

She pays for everything; if you notice, the man said that he did not work and she claims him as a dependent on her taxes. Cannot get MORE feminist than that; the woman being the bread winner of the family.

Are you running an air conditioner non stop ? Our power bill was just over 300baht last month $15aud .
It's never been over 500baht but we don't use an air conditioner and it's to hot for hot water.
Our living costs are 9,000 to 12,000 baht a month including rent, power, water, food.
That's 2 adults, 1 child. Small 2bed town house in udon. 5mins to airport, less then 5mins to cbd.

@@andrewwilson3741 I am so sorry that happened to you! For your own sake I hope you have forgiven those who have wronged you. Not all Thai lie, but Farang are targets for that type of scam. Thai men cheat as do Thai women, Thai have a different view on sexuality, it is a beautiful country & culture, but no Judeo Christian foundation means morality & keeping the 10 Commandments are not part of the general culture. Find a nice LDS Thai that is young & has never married & you have hit the lottery for certain. But you must be a quality person yourself, for we attract what balances us, so find balance by yourself 1st... Then you will be in a wise position to attract high quality women. Be a friend to make a friend. Love others & love will find you. Be kind & charitable & kind & charitable women will flock your way. Peace Brother ✌

Great video! I'm an American and believe it or not, if you and I stood side by side no one could tell us apart. What is your last name? My last name is Westhart. I live on Coronado Island in San Diego, California. I have lived in Thailand back in 1987 -1989. Been back many times and am considering moving there for awhile. I have been all over S.E. Asia and especially like Thailand and Indonesia (been to many far-flung places there). I'm retired now so my house rented, I would live very well. Taxes, Australia is worse than the U.S. so it makes total sense. Cheers Mate, I'll watch the rest of your vid's and keep track of what you are doing. If we ever meet, you will be floored by how much we look alike. By the way, you're wife is very sweet. Nice people there.

After a friend died suddenly in 2013, that was it, I decided to leave the expensive San Francisco South Bay for Thailand. Settled on Chiang Mai from watching videos. Arrived here July 2014 with one suitcase and a backpack. In my first month here, met a Thai lady (Nung). We married March 2015. Nung has 3 adult kids (1 still in school). Today, the 5 of us and 2 dogs live in a 4 bedroom townhouse near Airport Plaza Mall. Nung is 50 and I am 70. We have 3 cars and 3 motorbikes. Our monthly expenses are about $2000 usd. Thanks for sharing, best wishes.

I guess not bad when you have money. Here in Toronto 1150$ a month and in CDN so your 2000 USD to me like 2500$ more then 2 times what I get a month here. So to me it would be expensive not cheap !

Bangkok is always way more expensive than anywhere else in general, with the strong baht at the moment everyone is getting less baht for whatever currency they have, stay well away from Bangkok it will basically save you half of what you would pay in general unless you are in a tourist hot spot!

obviously living in Phuket would be a no no, unless you have patreons of course to help you live for free like some people do, I always stay as far away from Bangkok as I can get, personal choice obviously but I can just do without the noise, pollution, the rip off prices, general feeling of being crushed into a sardine tin!

Bangkok is an incredible city. It is not that expensive. Probably the best place in the world for food and certainly by price. A new condo, furnished and with aircon in Chatuchak / LatPhro is about 5,000 bt rent per month. Electric and water is between 900bt and 1,100bt. Internet 300 bt. Buy a new Honda Wave for 45,000 bt and you can get around Bangkok quickly.

John, how many Farang want to live out in the backblocks of BKK ? I accept that living in the Farang ghetto around Suk is ridiculously expensive, but I'd prefer to get right out of Bangkok altogether than living with the teeming masses in suburbia - Lat Phrao's traffic is bad and will only get worse. 20 years ago I asked a fellow tourist how long it would be before Bangkok became completely unsustainable and each year I'm forced to shorten my estimate - you are most welcome to it.

    • @webosm6494
      @webosm6494 6 років тому

Arthur, is your estimate each year a year shorter? :) :) I choose Prachuap, small town has everything we need and also has a nice beach. I like it better then Bangkok but the costs are not really that much different. Prices for food is the same only less choice. I paid 12.000 for a 4-bedroom condo close to Phrakanong BTS, now I have a 5-bedroom house with 1 rai land for 7.000. The main thing why outside of Bangkok is cheaper is that there are less things to do. In Bangkok it is so easy to go out to dinner, catch a movie, go bowling etc... It is still possible but it is an hours drive away to HuaHin , which makes it less easy.

To be honest, I haven't really noticed any increases. We don't really have favourite brands and so most of the supermarket items that we buy are the ones that are on promotion.
Ta loves getting a bargain and is happy to use as many discount coupons as she can find.
It's simply because of how she grew up, her family not having much money on the farm in Phayao and having to make each baht stretch as far as it could.
      Where are you living now?

    • @951232007

Our Life Thai right now we live in Northern California. Will have to adjust to a big change when we live there, not the same as going there on holiday. Have to stay within budget. We plan to explore Thailand staying one month at each places renting apartment instead of staying at hotels... hopefully we can visit Phayao. Many good info from your videos...are you living on marriage visa or retirement visa ? Wondering which one is easier to get..

    • @OurLifeThai
      @OurLifeThai  6 років тому

      Your plan sounds wonderful.
I'm here on a marriage visa. Too young for a retirement visa. haha
Retirement visa is the easier of the 2, much less paperwork (but you need to show that you have more money. Only need 400,000 for the marriage visa).
You just need to be at least 50 years old and have one of the following:
Security deposit of THB 800,000 in a Thai Bank Account for 2 months prior to the visa application.
Monthly income or pension of at least THB 65,000. An affidavit from the foreign embassy or consulate has to be obtained as proof of the income.
Combination of the Thai bank account and yearly income with the total of 800,000 THB.
      Information per Siam Legal.

Interesting video. I retired recently in Florida and I'm thinking about moving to Thailand. My income is 2000 usd. What's the best way to find a rental home where you live? Is a car necessary or can you use taxis and tuk tuks to get around? Can you walk to markets and stores? Avoiding the cost of a car would be great. Thanks.

    • @OurLifeThai
      @OurLifeThai  6 років тому +1

      Welcome to Our Life Thai
There are web sites to find a rental property, however many of the English speaking sites focus on the more expensive homes.
      www.thailand-property.com/properties-for-rent/samut-prakan?sort=min_price
You can definitely survive without a car, motorbike taxi, tuk tuk, minibus, bus, taxi or train. It just depends on where you decide to live.
In my village it's less than a 10 minute walk to Lotus Express, 711, markets and street food.
      Thanks for your questions,
      Take care

Nice! I could live a lot of years at that budget on my bitcoins. I'm waiting for a 6000 dollar bitcoin price before I quit my job though. A 6000 btc price would be enough to live the rest of my life there. I love the idea of being able to live well without the need to work a 9 to 5 job. Don't get me wrong, I actually like my career as a heavy diesel truck mechanic but financial freedom would be awesome. Since I paid off my house here in Seattle I live comfortably on 35% of my take home pay. I'm a pretty frugal guy.
I'd like to be a bit more rural though. I'd like to have a garden, some fruit trees and I'd like to experiment with doing some Aquaculture. In that climate I could grow a lot of fish such as tilapia. They'd all die in the winter here in Seattle though.

Nice one! Bitcoins have increased to 7860. That plus what I can get for my house should push me up to 830k, then there's the 401k, and I should start getting something from a small pension and social security in 13 years. I think I'm ready. If I tried to retire here in the states I'd have to pay about 6 or 7 hundred a month in mandatory medical insurance. If I live overseas though, I don't have to pay that. Now I'm navigating the paperwork necessary to get my passport.

I have been living and working in Thailand for 13 years , what people forget is that the average Thai earns 10,000 to 25,000 per month with the majority closer to the 10,000 to 15,000.Also you need to keep in mind what standard of living works for you , if you choose a simple Thai standard middle class life you will do well with 30,000 in the provinces or away from the main hubs of the city . I live in Sukumvit and just my rent and food is around 60 to 65k (2 of us) but we like to eat western, Japanese and Italian and ofcourse Thai food and we live in a lovely condo near the bts. I would recomend the simple more Thai life like this lovely couple have , its a happy life , very cheap and simple .

My wife and I also live in the suburbs of Bangkok (Salaya, just over the border into Nakhon Pathom), but I work on the other side of Bangkok in Hua Mark (a 50 km commute, which I drive roundtrip twice a week because my university job gives me a free dormitory room). Our expenses are considerably more than theirs!
First the car. My car payment is slightly more than 15,000 THB per month, and my fuel costs (E20) are about 1,000 THB per week or 4,000 per month. Tolls to work are 500 THB per week or 2,000 per month. Auto insurance is 20,000 THB per year or 1,666 THB per month. The car was 800,000 THB new and I put 200,000 THB as a down payment with a 4-year payment plan. It will be paid off at the end of the year. A word of advice: cars are more expensive in Thailand and cost more to maintain than in the USA.
We bought our semi-detached home in Salaya at the end of 2011 with a 25-year mortgage. Our mortgage payment is around 14,700 THB per month. The village fees are considerably more than what the couple above report: about 750 per month which includes the security guards (gated community), garbage collection, maintenance of the sewage system, and sweeping of the sois. We pay about the same as they do for water and electricity.
Our wifi and phone contracts are about double what they report paying: about 800 THB each for the phone (DTAC) and/or tablet, and 750 THB per month for the TOT wifi (supposedly fiber-optic cable but at times slow). I also indulge with True Vision Gold package for satellite TV for 1,600 THB per month.
In summary, mortgage and car payment alone amount to over 30,000 THB per month. Considering all other expenses, including restaurants and entertainment and medical expenses combined, we easily spend over 80,000 THB per month! I don't consider it an extravagant lifestyle, so at the current exchange rate that is about $2,500 USD per month.

    Hi Brad & Ta,
I've come back to watch this again. My retirement is a long way off but been thinking of doing 3 months Oz : 3 months Thailand. Semi retirement to live life while I'm young....ish. Lol
Just doing my own spreadsheet like you have in vid mate. Lol.
Anyway, hope you're both well. Looking forward to more content when you return home.

      G'Day
      That's a great idea.
Having a sound financial plan is the best strategy, something that I didn't do before making the move to Thai.
I was just extremely lucky that I found the prefect girl for me.
      Take care

I have been looking into Thailand for just a short time now as a potential place to live and the costs, so thank you for this, just the right balance of detail and impact (what it really gets you). Since this is early in the game for me it looks great but I am a little worried that I don't find many statistics on the success rate of expats who try to live there. Most of the UA-cam vids, even those with what sounds like it might highlight negatives, rarely does and treats them very lightly. I am always wary of things that look too good to be true... Glad it works for you, you guys really seem happy.

      G'Day Bill
      Thanks so much for sharing.
With regard to "statistics on the success rate of expats who try to live there", I doubt that such a number would even exist.
Provided that you stay busy, don't fall in love with a bar girl (prostitute) and don't spend your days propped up against a bar, you can live a wonderful life in Thai.
For me, the main negatives are:
Very low percentage of English speaking Thai people.
Non Thai food is comparatively expensive.
      Cars are expensive.
      The roads are inherently dangerous.
      Feeling of isolation.
Many Expat / Thai relationships fail. But that's not always the fault of the Thai girl. Many fail because both sex and alcohol are cheap and readily accessible for Expats in Thailand. Thai women will not put up with an unfaithful drunk (for very long anyway).
Regardless of how long you live in Thai, many people / companies / government will never view you as anything more than a temporary visitor.
I hope that this information is of use to you
      Take care
      Brad & Ta
