I also study the face for subtle features that stand out from the ordinary face, then I formulate the exaggerations in light of each features relationship to each other to create the likeness. Basically some of the steps Tom teaches. Sometimes it takes looking at other caricatures to warn me up. It can be hard sometimes to naturally go back into the "portrait mode".

I thought I recognized his voice, but didn't think it was a Switchfoot song. You've been inspiring me with your art technique and it's great to see you at work. Most of my caricature work is more like "cartoon portrait" rather than real caricatures. Of course, there's less chance of people being insulted ;-)

Great! And yes at an event it's another world. There's a caricature convention coming up in TX that would be very helpful, hope you can make it. I ran across your FB a while back and love you coloring technique. A tip would be to shade with other colors. Yellows, baby blues, light greens, violets etc. For example your "Dave" caricature could have been lightly colored with a light blue as an underpaint. It's an old tip. You can still keep the light art sketch look and this will make it pop.
I bought that recently (added to quite a collection of books of caricatures and about caricature). I'm just starting to branch out to doing live drawings (vs the work from photos that I've been doing for decades). It's a new thing all together to commit to putting pen to paper right away!! Thanks Jeni. Spacing isn't that important in comparison to portraits. Caricatures always have exaggerations or they become portraits drawn with marker. When you exaggerate a feature you have to move others with it to keep likeness sometimes and you may even have to delete a feature to make way for an important one. These are the prismacolor stix and they are great to blend. Have a fun day!
Amazing work Mac. Im an artist myself and try to dabble in all mediums. Im a pencil/charcoal/marker/tech pen artist.Basically black and white. You've inspired me to tackle this type of artistry. Also loved how you did not need to erase or anything, really shows how confident you are. Id really love for you to do a caricature of me. Amazing job once again
Glad I could help:) I rub a prismacolor kneaded rubber eraser over it. For some reason it just doesnt smear or erase. I make sure not to pencil in so hard with the lead stick. Stay away from pencils because when you erase the sketch it leaves an indention in the paper that will leave a mark when you shade or color towards the end.
Thanks! My main job is as a youth pastor, so getting to the convention hasn't been an option for getting away, although I hope to get there someday. I'm a member of ISCA and love Exagerated Features.

For the black lines I use a "Premier" and to color the "Stix". The premier in this video looks different because its on a wooden extender that I got at the art shop to extend the life of it when it gets short, i'm a little cheap:)
It is very refreshing to see someone doing traditional vs. digital art today. While I personally would have exaggerated the nose and chin quite differently (in the end result, IMO, the relative spacing does not seem to resemble the original subject much ) I love your flow for the eyebrows, hair, etc. The relative proportion of the forehead is great too. Are the "pastel" looking square crayons you are using the Prismacolor ArtStix? I have been a fan of their colored pencils for years.
QUick question, you rub out the graphite after you put on the prismacolour black, how does the prismacolour not smudge ? is it just that good ? Btw love your work and your a great inspiration

Dood you get a Like just for your music selections. Cool as they are however I wouldnt mind hearing your thought process as you work. What you chose to accentuate in the charicature and why.etc. Nice work.
The EF's are a great help! Do you take the youth out there to do outreaches? There is a ministry called Way Of the Master that teaches faithful evangelism and might be a great help to the youth in teaching and motivating. Try to find "Hell's best kept secret". It's the ministries, I guess, central teaching. Have you ever heard of Paul Washer? I'm sure your busy but if you can spare some time watch here on youtube a video called "The shocking youth Message".

Thats the truth! You should look into getting "the Mad Art of Caricature" book. It has taught me a whole lot!
