Wheel bearings on these type of wagons are so neglected. I'm just as guilty with mine. I always forget to do them until one fails. They always fail with a full load too it seems.
I think you have a better wagon for having done what you did. I think silicone is a stop gap measure. You have a far more substantial wagon now!
I am in constant awe at your skill level, be it electrical, welding, carpentry, fabricating, fence building, and mechanical.
I still feel that you had a great deal on the first feeder. For a little bit of work you have a feeder that will last at least 20 years if you maintain it (as you seem to do). If you work out how much money you will have saved in feed costs over the time it will last, then I think your in the money big time. Because you fixed it the right way you will have years of ease of mind because you know it was done right. If the other one has some silicone in it, well remove it and do what you did to the first one. A few hours spent now will save you days later on and that is without the cost of spoilt feed due to a tacky repair. Pete will be happy with the first feeder. Thanks for posting

You did a great job on the first feed wagon Evan. In a few years to come the work you have done will pay off. With the second wagon you will be cleaning out the old silicon in a couple of tears. Weld plates on the second one and respray it as you did with the first. You will then have two wagons that you can look at with pride. It's only a few more hours labour and a few dollars for extra materials. Having watched your videos for the past two years I can tell you are a stickler for perfection. It will be well worth the extra time and money....

It is always best to replace metal instead of siliconing. You can still repair it cheaper than buying a new one
Great job 👍 Silicone is being lazy. Fix it right, and be done with it. I was impressed with the way you fixed the first one. Do the same to the second. And add a slow moving vehicle sign. Repack those bearings and make sure its road worthy when its loaded.

The red wagon was fixed up real nice, honestly, it looks great and will last many years with the repairs you made. You'll be able to walk past it all the time now and say to yourself "I did that" and know that it was fixed properly, and not with silicone.

You'll be happier with the one you fixed. The green one is still going to need paint and silicone is a temporary fix at best. You'll find that it's pulled loose and leaked when you start seeing wet/moldy feed after pulling it to the feed lot a few times.
Big Red will be more centamental, we all know, whenever we have blood sweat,and tears in something, we appreciate it more. Good job and a great asset to the farm.
I think you did the right thing on the red wagon. Welding in metal replacement strips will last longer than silicone the holes. Even on the green wagon welding in material is a much smarter thing than siliconing the holes. That the difference between someone with a welder than one without a welder. You got tool then use it to make the correct repair.
The one you repaired looks better than the other one
Yes, you could have purchased a new feed but I think you do enjoy the challenge of refurbishing something old and making it new again. The look of "I Did It" is priceless!
Even though you felt the feed wagon wasn't a good deal, you are blessed to be able to have the skills and equipment to fix it so it will last.
It does seem like 5 days is a big investment, with all the other work that goes into farming. But the ten years you'll get back from all that work really will pay off. Fun to watch the transformation of the wagon, Evan. Thanks for sharing the process with us!

I love your videos but this is probably the best yet. With your skills, you should "properly" repair the second bulk wagon and forget silicon. Do the job properly and you'll have two feed wagons that will last for years and years and require virtually no maintenance. Perhaps it would be a good idea to look at the running gear whilst the wagons are empty.
Nice work, you are very good at bringing old farm equipment back to life. How was the running gear? Tires ,bearings and lug nuts are always a problem. You know these things will fail when it's loaded.
Sometimes the delivery charge can be pricey. I use the super bags that they fill with seed. Some feed/seed areas will give you them. You can put 1500# in each one, use your pallet forks to pick it up and dump it in. Could save you a bunch of money.
Personally I think you not only got a good buy but you and your mrs did a first class job of fixing it up.

I've bought or been given alot of stuff over the years to repair and use or sell, sometimes it works out with little effort, sometimes it's oh crap, thankfully you have the ability, equipment and facility to make the repairs, great video.
Great job on the wagon but I have 2 suggestions. Number one and best is to paint the inside bed (no need to paint the vertical parts) with Slip-plate or similar Teflon based paint. It will let the feed slid out SO much easier. Number 2 suggestion would have been to put a steeper roof on the wagon to help it shed the snow load. I think you did a great job repairing the bed and door.
Next time u spray a big area get a 515 spray tip for your gun. It’s called a barn spray tip. Depending on your distance from the surface you an get a 10 to 12 inch pattern. Speeds up spraying large areas outside.

only good thing about a project like that is it becomes yours. you know the ins and the outs and what is good and bad and you have a lot of time vested in it. Hopefully, because of that, it becomes your favorite wagon of the two. Hopefully the running gear and your roof turn out to be better than the other one and this one turns out to be worth the effort. fingers crossed.

You can never go wrong by over building. If it takes two nails put three screws in it. My opinion is you should paint the green one now before putting it into service. Will be better in the long haul. Keep doing it. Enjoy you videos. By the way, your wife is a real trooper and excellent helper.

We built our own feed bins from concrete blocks..One 25 ton bin,,and one 5 ton bin...We have a artic load at a time..
Which if we were to buy 1 ton at a time£220..
As opposed to £175 a ton bulk...
Lasts about 8-10 weeks..Roughly..

You did a very precise and thorough job and I was super impressed with the materials you used in the techniques. I was on a farm and a lot of times we didn’t have the money to do things right in the beginning and then as dad had more money I learned the difference not only between money but taking the time to do it correctly and I learned so much from him versus other men particularly some son-in-law‘s Who wouldn’t be bothered and couldn’t be bothered to do things correctly and so I am just majorly over the top impressed with the job you get on this red wagon and I want you to feel very good about yourself and the time and the skills you have to do what you did to make this scruffy looking wagon look BRAND NEW❣️

great video. I have the same type set up. couple of suggestions. 1 check the wheelbesrings in both of them they may be good. I didn't one of mine was shot and didn't find out till it was full of feed. then again it's cheaper for me to pull to the feed mill rather than have them charge me for delivery. 2 when I made my roof which I did alot like you did and the wagon was filled with feed the sides expanded which caused my pt lumber to come apart at the screws. I got my router and cut slots and replaced with bolts to allow the wood to ride on the bolt when the chains were tight and as the load lowered the lumber was able to move in the groove......wish I would have thought about it I would have made it out of emt like your second trailer

That came out really good. don;t focus on the hours you put into it but rather the pride of repairing it and putting it back in service, plus you were able to film a cool youtube video.

I see it a little different. Yes, the second one was a great deal, but the first one you spent time on it, and by that took ownership of it. You turned something rough, into a great wagon. Well at least the tires held air when you got it 🤣. Seriously though the running gear is worth the $350 you paid. I have to say I don’t know if I’d have done anymore than a primer coat on the inside, I mean it’s going to be covered most of the time and the feed going in and out is going to eventually polish the paint off. I have to say the second wagon was a better deal but you could easily get your money back out of the first one. Also stay away from the silicone idea, that usually leads to more problems down the road, ask me how I know.
next time little thinner an a airless house painter ,you'll be amazed how fast and easy an nice it comes out, tractors too, your stuff will look brand new for yrs to come

Check the hubs make sure the bearings aren't dry .but you did a great job good luck
The lesson learned from the repairs of the red one is to not buy used equipment at bargain prices unless you can put your eyes and hands on it prior to purchase, so you have good information on condition before you make your offer.
I like the red one better. It made great video and I love the channel you two have keep up the good work.
You may want some slip plate to apply on sloped floor. If that’s no longer available try waxing the sloped floor. The running gears should be worth more than you paid.
A Tyvek suit and pressure washer extensions, (2 in package from Amazon), when I pressure wash the house siding or other messy jobs. The extensions give you about three more feet and the suit save's your clothes. You will find the snap in extensions very helpful. I purchased a second package to aid in cleaning gutters. GREAT VIDEO and GREAT HELPER. Some spouses would not be interested. Give thanks, that yours is.
I really enjoy watching you work on this kind of project for two reasons 1) You are a very talented fabricator 2) You don't cut corners! You need not apologize for the one thing that makes you special and that most people enjoy; and it's that you never just half way do a job; I admire that!

That’s a good deal Evan. Around here we see those John Deere 943,953, 963 wagons bring around 700 for the frame. I’m an farmall man but those are the best running gears in my own opinion. It will serve you well. Yours looks like a 953 or 963. Have a good one.
I like the first one better, and you didn't over build it, you did it right, it will last a long time. Honestly, I would fix the small holes on the second one the same way, and give it a matching, fresh coat of paint to stop the small amount of rust from progressing. I think you'll be happier in the long run when you don't have a lot of regular repair and maintenance, and you dont have to empty it while in use to fix things later.

It may be overkill what you did with the grain cart but it was done correctly and will last a lot longer than if you took the short cuts. Looks great....keep doing what you do best.....overkill....lol

As I watched this amazing transformation and your skills Evan, I thought about a future of you doing this for others, possibly after retirement if not a little before, since new equipment is very expensive and you have a unique skillset of repairing, transforming and extending the life of warn out equipment, for many more years. I'm sure there are many farmers in that area who have the skills, but maybe not the time to do this kind of transformation to older equipment, and it would be a win, win for you and them, with them saving money and you making money, on things like this. And now you have a video to show, or before and after pictures, and what you can do. Nice impromptu air show!

I think you did a very good job on this wagon. By fixing it up with metal, you now know what is in the wagon. I’m glad you didn’t take the easy way out. That’s my opinion.
I would have loved working on it. I was a certified welder for 26 years and like to fabricate on projects. Feed Carr looks real nice. Paint the wheel rims and I bet you could double your money if you were to decide to sale it.
A word of caution on the tarp- wind will cause the tarp to flap and wear at the corners and along the wood. We only get one year of use from each tarp. If you can find some used Billboard tarps, they are lots thicker and will last longer
I like the one you fixed up. At least you know it's made right now ,silicone is not my idea for a repair.
