Thank you for your question. Wood pallets in most cases do cost less than plastic pallets and depending on the application plastic pallets may not be required. If that is the case then price point usually determines the purchasing decision.
I'm looking for a plastic pallet with holes in it to provide a base for a chicken coop, wood rots away very quickly from their droppings.
To save money I would recommend you find a local supplier who sells plastic pallets that meets your specifications. Shipping plastic pallets now a days is quite expensive even if it is just one unit.
Are plastic pallets typically made from recycled or new plastic pellets?
They come in either option. Of course the virgin resin plastic pallets will cost more.
So you will need good plastic pallet molds
Let some "forklift operators" get hold of them plastic skids whos had a bad day or in hurry
But: plastic pallets tend to be slippery.
Everything of course depends on your particular application. With plastic pallets you have options for addressing that issue. For example, pallets can come with lips on the 4 sides of the platform and/or rubber grommets to resist slipping.
Wood pallets are cheaper and easy to make and repair. They are also biodegradable. Boxes do not slip on wood pallets. Plastic pallets are expensive and can’t be repaired when damaged or cracked. Ask forklift drivers which are the strongest pallets and they will consistently say wood pallets.
Wood absorbs water, do you know what it means?
