  • We review and test the new Honda Ridgeline. After driving the new Toyota Tacoma and Chevy Colorado many have asked about Honda's motive to continue down this alternative path. After spending some time with the new model it becomes fairly obvious, this isn't different for the sake of it.

    I just ordered the RTL-T FW drive to replace my Sierra SLE 4WD. I only tow my walleye boat moderate, with an occasional trip to Canada. The only off road I do is driving the logging roads for grouse and woodcock hunting. I have no qualms about making this switch. I'm a 70 year old disabled Marine veteran and have no manhood issues. Just so you know, the first vehicle Honda made was a motorcycle and the engineers that designed it were so happy with the result that one of them said "its just like a dream". The bike was called the Honda Dream after that and they still use it in their slogan "The Power of Dreams". Now you know something.

      Jimo368 this is untrue. Honda was born from the merger of Honshumura Fishworks and Damaribuchi Heavy Manufacture Concern. They are a renown detergent manufacturer, and built their delivery vehicles in-house originally. The vehicles proved to be so reliable that Honda decided to sell them to the public.

    I’ve had trucks all my life. I’ve never really needed all the off road capability and ground clearance. At this point in my life this makes so much more sense than a big truck. Better mileage, more comfortable, all the storage in back and I can still haul lumber or camping gear. I love it. This is gonna be my next truck.

      @@Painfulwhale360 I own a 2017 RTL-E so one trim level below the black edition. That said it has all the options apart the black everything outside and the red inserts on the seats which I couldn't live with. No complaints, no issues just regular maintenance. I call it a "sports truck" because of the way it drives in all weather conditions thanks to awd torque vectoring and the sweet 3.5 V6 vtec yoo!
      If I were to point out few things it would had to be the suspension noise is coming inside the cabin on potholed roads, there is a annoying rattle noise from the driver side door around the grab handle and if you have a bed cover the bed itself is on the shallow side.

      I like the "matter of fact" no BS style.
      Pretty much nailed it. It's really the truck most people need, that own trucks based on features they don't really use. Like heavy towing or rock copping they never really do. What's weird is some people that have an almost religious hatred of them and proclaim "It's not a real truck." How is it any different from a suburban housewife with a massive SUV with a single child?
      Lot of people are missing out on a truck that will fulfill most of their needs but want features they'll seldom use in a "real" body on frame truck.

    Through a pure coincidence, I got to meet the chief engineer that worked on the VTEC engine when I hung out with his son, a friend whom I met in the US and then visited years later in Tokyo (they used to live in California in the 70's and 80's as the development center was there). He was honored for his contributions to Honda by the emperor, one of only a few people as far as I know. I had the traditional experience with them in their house, complete with green tea ceremony etc. The story is much longer, but knowing the person that was one of the leading people on the development of that very important engine does tickle my car-guy feathers a bit.

Some days I wish I would total it so I'd be forced to buy this new one, but as long as it lasts, it is going nowhere. FWIW, with the right tires, this is the best bad weather vehicle you can own. I own a 2017 Ridgeline - RTL-T version. I bought it in December 2016 and now it has 53000 miles. It's a great truck for an old guy like me. I haul mulch, lumber, gravel and assorted yard tools. It's incredibly comfortable on the road and gets great gas mileage - on the trip to Memphis I get around 27 MPG. My previous truck was a Tacoma. The Ridgeline is a great truck for me, and it's been trouble free.

  • @DrivingHy
    @DrivingHy 7 років тому +73

    After reading/watching countless reviews about this vehicle you sir have done so the best (IMHO).
    That said why does it seem there are so many ppl trying to attack this vehicle as some type of pickup poser?
    Since I'm old enough to remember the days of El Caminos, Rancheros and 80's Dodge Rampage. These hybrid car based coupe pickups were wildly popular in their time and lacked any of the capability of their nearest truck based competition.
    No one ever confused them for anything other than what they were, stylized cars that resembled pickups with far less capacity.
    Honda has not only turned this concept on its ear but made it far more functional, attractive and refined for average ppl. They've successfully bridged the gap far better than any of the aforementioned models.
    So instead of comparing this to a full size pickup and saying it comes up short, ppl should look at it differently. I see it more of a lifestyle vehicle for the average person whose needs are less than those of a contractor or hard core boater and the like.
    In fact there are still many of us who who live in the city with limited garage space and prefer something even smaller like the old Subaru Baja or Hyundai Santa Cruz concept.
    In the end offering more variety of models can only be a good thing...

    • @scottfurlong5475
      @scottfurlong5475 6 років тому +4

      hiptech This is exactly what I was saying. Honda never put the Ridgeline in the 1/2 ton truck arena but ppl are constantly comparing it to a much bigger, much more capable vehicle. It's like comparing a Nissan Micra to a 350Z or a minivan to a school bus, it's insane!

    • @Meqanicull
      @Meqanicull 5 років тому +4

      I agree with you, honda truly out did themselves when they made this truck, but the problem many people have with it is the unibody design, which compared with similar vehicles it's not a problem at all and in fact probably one of the best overall unibody innovations. The issue arises when comparing the vehicle, although this is technically considered a mid-size truck it really can't be compared in the category. This may have a bed and "truck like features" in reality it's hardly a truck at all, in the end it's just a larger glorified crossover modified to be slightly more tow and off road capable, so like the comment before mine mentioned comparing this to a proper truck is like comparing a Hyundai tiburon to a mustang gt. IMO this isn't a truck and shouldn't be compared to one, however it does offer the same practicality of a truck without the sacrifice and that is what makes it a perfect option for people looking for the same practicality without the harsh sacrifices.

      I base my decisions heavily on logic, I determine my needs and like utilitarian type stuff, this vehicle ticks all the boxes for me, but then I've been thru all the macho bullshit growing up, all the time and money wasted mud riding in jacked up gas guzzling loud 4x4s , getting stuck up to the headlights, breaking ujoints and axles. Getting 12 mpg, towing huge trailers, tickets speeding ect ect, at 61 years old I have little desire to do any off-roading, I like peace and quiet, I like 28 mpg, I keep a low profile, I like smooth quiet ride and practicality. I had a Lexus Ls400 and it was the quietest and smoothest ride I've ever experienced the Ridgeline is the second smoothest ever. I can understand why a young man would try to measure his manhood with a thing, something external instead of internally, but when you get to be older you get tired of superficial bullshit and just want things that work and work well that describes my Honda Ridgeline. I bought a new one in 2017 and loved it, it works as dependably as a home appliance. I took it for granted after awhile. I traded it for a Jeep Wrangler because the wife and I planned to tow it behind an rv when we retired. Long story short I immediately missed the Ridgeline and hated the two door jeep as a daily driver. I just traded the jeep for a used 2017 awd Ridgeline and couldn't be happier.. my first Ridgeline was two wheel drive and it felt more squirrelly when I would get on it, it would spin the front wheels but got great milage. The awd is very stable and just goes.... gets about 1mpg less but gives me more capability.. I think those that can accurately understand their needs of a vehicle and check their ego at the door will be amazed at the functionality of this truck/car or whatever you choose to call it.. life is to short to drive something based on image, go for substance....

Done! Need to tow your tractor or whatever other heavy object? Done! Oh also need to pickup (heh) the kids from school afterwards? Also done! Seriously being able to do all of these things in one vehicle is a massive convince to people that are always running from the farm/camping area/lake/whatever

    I think light duty trucks like this fit most people's (pickup drivers) lifestyle really well. My only complaint is that for being a lighter weight vehicle, it really doesn't get any better fuel mileage than a Colorado or Tacoma. I keep waiting for a hybrid small pickup that will get 30mpg, but it never happens. As usual, great video!

    I just discovered your videos today and I have really enjoyed them all. Very informative and detailed, and you've covered a great range of vehicles too, not just focusing on one class or category. I own and daily drive an '01 Frontier and if I decided to replace it with another truck this would be one of my front runners. It's price is the only thing preventing me from going and looking at one, but when these start hitting the used market this is going to be a great option. I learned a lot of new things by watching your video, so thank you for creating such a great review of it, like you do on all of them. My only complaint, I laughed so hard from 3:30 to 4:15 I didn't hear anything you were saying and had to rewatch that bit. Then just when I thought the giggles were gone and forgotten there it was again at 29:19.Again, great work, thanks for making this video.

    I've seen every review on youtube for this truck and this is by far the best most comprehensive review! 2 thumbs up sir for a job well done. I absolutely love my new Ridgeline. Guys I understand the traditional way of thinking when it comes to pickups but I know so many people that barely do anything with their pickups and what they use it for is daily driving. All you have to do is test drive this Truck and you will understand the unbelievable refinement and confidence inspiring ride that it provides. It's frankly a breath of fresh air. Lastly Honda is really ahead of the game by introducing the unibody truck and the reason is that EPA standards in 2025 ilwill be at 50mpg! this will be forcing manufacturers to rethink body on frame and you will see more midsize pick ups go to Unibody with time. Honda can say that they were the first and boy did they get it right.

    • @savagegeese
      @savagegeese  7 років тому

      Did you drive the Colorado and Tacoma? I can see why you bought this and you have the right mentality. It surprises me that no one else has tried this, but in fairness the other brands have a ton of development money tied up in their midsized platforms, I would be shocked if they would go outside of that box unless the Ridgeline started eating into their sales .

    • @InChristJesus87
      @InChristJesus87 7 років тому +1

      savagegeese I didn't test drive either. I have been in a Tacoma and wasn't a fan of the seating postion. I've been driving both a Nissan 350 and 370z for the last year and was tired of sitting on the ground. As for the Colorado i considered it but never got around to test driving it. I just fell in love with the Ridgeline when I drove it. I'm 29, no kids and I'm a commercial truck driver; I drive a day cab 300 miles a day and I really wanted something th at was nice comfortable smooth and versatile this hit all the key points for me. I live in Dallas fort worth metroplex and I see vehicles all day long every Tacoma I see and I see many are all looking brand new being driven back and forth to work. Many individuals that live in this large metroplex just use their trucks as daily drivers and I really think this is the best option s for those type of ppl. As for manufacturers adopting unibody that something that would definitely happen in 20 to 30 yrs plus but I think we will see it eventually.

    I come to you from the future, late 2021. They've updated the front end, and it looks really good now. With the exception of those who really rock climb, or heavy tow, this is the best truck on the market. Why? Six reasons:
    1) Most functional 5' bed in the business. No wheel well arches eating up, or making lumpy bed space. Barn door access makes climbing in a breeze, and putting heavy things in a breeze. Weathertight, massive, lockagle trunk.
    2) Best back seat in the business. Not only are the passengers elevated so they can actually see, there is good leg and head room. More importantly, this is the best back seat storage in the business. The seats fold up soooo flat. And the floor is flat as well. Cavernous space, enough to fit a 29" mountain bike easily (with the front wheel off, and bars turned).
    3) Best front seat space. I'm 6-4" and I can put the seat up to max and still have headroom. This means the seat is higher, thus waaay more thigh support. And the width, my god there is 12" between elbows in the front seat. No more fighting for the center armrest (and each person gets their own armrest anyway). My left elbow has 2" of clearance from the door (when it's propped up on the driver's door armrest)...
    4) Best ride quality. It's an SUV, it rides like as SUV. It's just so much more refined and comfortable. Especially on those long road trips.
    5) All wheel drive. It's always on. No more having to "decide" conditions are bad enough to turn on 4x4. No more driving in 4x4 when it's not warranted.
    6) Honda quality, with the exception of Toyota, no other brand comes close.
    7) Bonus feature. It's quite "simple", not a whole lot of techno nothing to muss and fuss with. "Simple" and "truck" go together like peanut butter and jelly...
    8) Bonus feature 2. The 2021 gets a 9 speed trans...

      Some shy away from the Ridgeline due to its higher price and 0 incentives than its competitors.

    • @bikebudha01
      @bikebudha01 2 роки тому

      @@squidusn71 The only company that gives it a run for it's quality is Toyota. But I've sat in a Tacoma, the drivers seating position is horrible. You sit on the floor with your legs straight out. AND because you are so low, visibility out over the massive front end is terrible. Ride quality is also much worse. Tacoma does have a manual... sigh... But in every other way, the Ridgeline is better (unless you rock crawl or tow - which I don't).

    • @squidusn71
      @squidusn71 2 роки тому +1

      @@bikebudha01 You must have owned a Tacoma before because that's exactly how I felt about my 2012 sport 4x4 lol. I know that the newer ones are the same way and there was no way I'd get a domestic. I was planning on keeping it forever but it didnt even had power seats, navigation, leather, with drum brakes and it was still an expensive truck. I'm 6ft and didn't mind the seating position but It was cramped. With that said, I didn't mind spending the extra "cash" on the Ridgeline since it came with all the goodies that my Tacoma didn't have. The AWD, smooth drive, awsome handling for a truck, and the interior space, every penny was worth it. I would like to mention also that my previous trucks never had a power sliding rear window and auto reverse "look down" side mirrors. I never imagined how useful those 2 things are lol. Then you have the added trunk, dual action tailgate, and spacious cargo when the back seats are folded. I had a full size before as well and I found it overkill specially as a daily driver, but still, my 4.0L Tacoma wasn't practical as a daily due to it being a gas guzzler for its size now that I know the Ridgeline is more efficient.
      I've always had trucks and I couldn't imagine not driving a Ridgeline or alike. I can't wait for the 3rd gen but if Toyota makes a similar truck, it will be very exciting for me.

    • @bikebudha01

      @@squidusn71 My thoughts exactly. My current truck is a 2011 Ford Ranger. It's got 130,000 miles on it. It's time to let the old girl go. So I gleefully ran down to the Toyota dealer to get a Tacoma because they still offer that with a manual. Then I sat in it. Like we both know, that was a dealbreaker. And comparably spec'd, the Tacoma is about the same price as the Honda. My RTL in Sonic Grey Pearl is scheduled to arrive in March. I can not wait...

    I am waiting to purchase a Ridgeline once my Traverse lease is up. I absolutely love the AWD truck! We definitely needs more AWD trucks in Michigan. In rural Michigan where I am at we have dry roads, followed by black ice and snow drifts, so having to mess with a part-time 4WD system would be miserable. Most truck owners don't do serious off roading, and AWD makes much more sense for winter driving safety (especially when outfitted with snow tires, which I think are a must for winter driving). I almost gave up on the Ridgeline when I heard they had cylinder deactivation, which I think is stupid for 1mpg gain. I'd rather not risk the repairs, because the repairs will cost more than the possible measly fuel savings. I just couldn't justify all the gas I'd be burning in a Toyota Tundra, which was my second choice. This will easily haul my boats (18.5ft bowrider and 20ft pontoon), boat fuel, wood working supplies and hunting gear with respectable gas mileage and surprising comfort!

    Honestly this seems like the smartest midsize truck. Recognizing that so many midsize truck owners do fuckall with their trucks, this is the superior livable truck if you don't need to tow stuff that should best be left to a 1/2 ton truck.
    And you get Honda reliability. If I was in the market for a light truck, it might have to be this.
    Signed, a three-time Honda owner. '04 6-6 Accord, 186k mile daily driver, doesn't understand how to fail me.

    Mr. Goose do you have an opinion on the 2020 Ridgeland refresh? It appears they are giving it a 9 speed with paddle shifters from the top trim Pilot and expanding the standard technology feature set across trim levels. I need to replace my manual trans pickup and I am on the fence between a 2019 and 2020 RTL. I think the key decision points would be which is the least offensive transmission and if the extra technology is a blessing or a curse.

    I'd love to see you review a previous high mileage Ridgeline to compare them and report on how well an old one is holding up. I have a 2010 (still relatively low mileage) that I love. It only has a 5 speed and with no DI it gets poor fuel mileage compared to the new full-size trucks. The center console doesn't jut out as far into the rear seat cargo area and the rear doors apparently open further. The bed sides are deeper, but the angle makes it difficult to reach over the closer you are to the cab. The 1st Gen RL is also not nearly as similar to the Pilot. They shared a drivetrain and some platform components, but the majority of the Ridgeline was designed bespoke as a truck (for instance, the interior knobs were designed to be used with gloved hands). You did not mention the ladder frame incorporated into the unibody structure that gives the "Ridgeland" a payload capacity of an F150 in a truck the size of a Tacoma (ie: something that can fit in a suburban or urban garage). Also, you didn't mention that the tailgate has a 300lb dynamic load rating, which means bed extenders are actually useful. You can load a pair of motorcycles in the bed and rest their rear wheels on the tailgate. I don't know of any other short bed pickups that recommend carrying any dynamic loads on the tailgate.

    I know Geese loves Aluminum suspensions, but the front lower control arms look wimpy, especially close to the hub, and just how much weight was saved by the cut outs in the arm, versus the strength losses. Looking back at Ridgeline/Pilot front suspension. The first models had Iron arms, then Aluminum arms, but pretty good sized, but the current models have less bulk. They look like they would be found on a BMW 325.
