At one time I made a VFR flight log like that out of an Excel spreadsheet. The best thing was that you can put calculated fields so when you put your magnetic variation and your compass deviation and the wind correction, the spreadsheet would perform the calculations. Of course now if you can use a live spreadsheet on your iPad, you can extend the calculations to your ETA and ETE, fuel remaining, etc.

I did the same thing, made the Excel template myself too. It was extremely primitive, but nice to have when learning to do everything by hand, and you don't need to physically write out every number or do the same calculations a dozen times in a row. As someone who appreciates the value of good old paper, even that can get annoying after a while.

@@Michael-zf1ko yeah back in the day it was something that you had to learn to get your private pilot license. Is it amazing that nobody really uses that kind of log anymore once they’ve obtain their license. It is so much easier using services like ForeFlight. Every now and then it’s fun to go back to the basics and plot on a sectionaland then enter it in a pilot. Boy, I remember when a sectional used to cost about $1.25 of course this was before they used airspace classifications.

I used this for my private pilot checkride. Originally was doing the old pencil and eraser method and got tired of it. This thing is much better. Still some kinks to iron out, but it’s the best one I’ve used.

You really make what is a lot of complex information clear and accessible. Thanks Dan.

love your "stupid map tricks" to get the VOR bearing and the mag var.

I literally just downloaded this the other day for my Commercial checkride xc coming up, and it's the best navlog I've used. Thank you Dan!

Very cool... but the morse code isn't working in the spreadsheet I just downloaded. Trying to fix figure out why it is not working.

Good. Now I don't feel like I'm cheating as much when I use SkyVector to help plan my X-countries and fill out my paper log. Using the available resources right?

I'd say as long as you understand everything it isn't cheating

I used this one for my PPL Checkride. the notes are printed in red ink and the DPE asked why that would be a problem at night. Red light red ink 💀. Be conscious of that.

Pro tip from a non-pro: Save your commonly flown routes as a template. Fill in known items like true course, magnetic course, compass deviation, etc. Then all you really have to do is pencil in how the winds and atmosphere changes the numbers.

The morsec function doesn't work at all. Excel doesn't know what it is and it is not defined anywhere. Great navlog though! Thanks!

Hey by the way might want to add a note that the FAA has said that THIS particular route is not allowed to be considered XC to local flight schools as the reg said "at LEAST 50mi" trust me i tried to use this route for my XC but had to go to KACY or KESN also the SBY VOR is indefinitely out of service XD

Ooh yeah 61.1 shows "more than 50" as the requirement, not "at least 50." Guess I never had to look that one up in practice. Thanks!
