I watched the demolition from Brotherton and felt the ground vibrate. Soon as Eggborough power station gets a date im heading there. Allegedly the 3 remaining cooling towers are staying up just in case they need to be used in the future.
Three of those towers 'Blew Over' in 1966 due to vibrations caused by the Wind Effect. Individually, each Cooling Tower could withstand severe gusts of wind. However, no account had been taken of 'Grouping' the Cooling Towers together. The result was rather like the effect on the Tacoma Bridge in the US.
Went up there myself to watch them go. I was over in upper Ferrybridge filming it, got a good angle myself, feel free to check out my video. Interesting how this station closes, and immediately gets decommissioned and demolished to make way for something new (gas fired station apparently, it’s why three have been kept), but nothing’s been done for 20 years in regard to Willington
They are building another powerstation there, they don't have planning permission yet for new towers so if they fail to get that the 3 that are left will remain.
I wonder if something similar happened at Willington power station, that place closed 20 years ago and as we know the cooling towers are still standing
History gone forever..great graphics matty
