During the 60s and 70s, there were many pen-holders from Japan and China that were really good with their forehands. Besides, the 38mm balls were faster with higher RPM.

Ma Long's power and precision forced that upon Ryu. Ryu couldn't pick clean shots. Ryu knew that he couldn't handle Ma's offensive tactics. He tried to force the initial attacks and made things worse. Ryu lost many matches against Wang Liqin in a similar fashion. Ma Long when compared to Wang Liqin, Ma is more lethal as an offensive player. Ryu had no chance against the Dragon.

Ryu was an endurance machine. He used to beat all other Korean national team members in mountain running race, which takes about 1 hour.
