- Expert Bike Fitter Neill Stanbury explains why you may be getting numb feet while out on the bike. Fixing you foot inside of a carbon shoe to ride a bike is quite an un-natural action. In this video we outline how doing some simple exercises could be all you need to fix your issue.

This is one of the main reasons why it's so hard to go from cycling to running. Weak feet, ankles and calf muscles.
I used to try winter running for cardio, but I felt so terrible in my legs every season when I would start running again. So weak and un coordinate
Every time I go for a run I am barely breathing while my calves and achilles tendon hurts like a hell
@@jovan.vuckovic we need thousands of kilometres to become good runners. It takes years of gradually increasing the load to build up a good training base.
I cycled for 10 yrs then switched to running. Took over 6 months for ankles to strengthen enough not to be limping from ligament/tendon damage after even a short jog. Then I got a hip stress fracture presumably because of low bone density from just cycling. I’m now 1 yr running and fit enough for normal training.
I think i could be luckier, i come from a running background and had to start cycling in Q4 of 2023 due to ITBS. The point is, try to do a bit of cross training and not just ride, and also strength train and also do exercises that improve the core, even push ups and good mornings with resistance bands help heaps. Actually for 3 years before running, i started with brisk walking, then racewalking (eg 3km @ 6km/min pace no issue). Also before i started cycling, i had a good 9 months worth of strength training esp the lower body muscle groups, plus a bit of plyometrics. Anyway i just ride for fun on a cheap US$140 MIC foldie bike, it's holding up quite alright even after close to 2000km now after 3 months. Actually i tend to see it as an advantage as the added resistance from a low end bike aids to the training/muscles. My country is only 600+ sq km, so it isn't that big anyway with that many roads/'places to go to, plus since it's for fun, i take numerous breaks and also only 20% are LT1/LT2 sessions, majority are easy Regardless, i also like to climb hills and do hill climbs/sprints, road cycling is not really my fav (esp due to road traffic conditions). Anyway my ITB has healed and i have started to run since 1 month ago.
That sure is a beautiful color on that Factor!
Last year I rode my bike coast to coast across the US wearing minimal/barefoot style shoes (which is my preference for everyday wear) and faced no ill effects other than a supposed loss of efficiency. I’m not racing anywhere, and the benefit of being able to comfortably walk/hike a bike outweigh any speed gains in my book.
That's why my feet are cold 🤔
This is why I ride an electric unicycle. And three other bikes with flat pedals.
I use my calf muscles too when I cycle with rigid shoes. I learnt that early on in life, in order to distribute my power as evenly as possible along the circular stroke of the feet. It helps a lot.
Stiffer shoes are more efficient. Additional work for the feet can be accomplished by alternating other forms of exercise. Simple as that!
Totally make sense great information, maybe this is where my Morton's neuroma started from
Smart guy.
I run after every gym workout on the treadmill and also use the treadmill to warmup before the workout. All in all total I run for about 20-30 min zone 2 two times a week like this. I don't think this is making me a runner or anything but it's better than nothing as there will be not much running in day to day activity
Really interesting 👍
Why is every cyclist pedaling with there toes down, and heel up?, you should drop your heel first, then level at the bottom of the stroke then pull up with you hamstrings then heel leads the foot on the upstroke. It seems today that everyone is riding with a too high of saddle. I see everyone rocking there hips and riding on there toes doesn’t seem powerful or efficient.
You're not going to make any efficiency gains trying to involve every muscle and tendon all the time. That's injuries waiting to happen. Cycling is cardio first and foremost. However, you would involve pretty much every muscle and tendon during a sprint to produce as much power as possible. That's when the pulling motion really matters.
Hello Neil i have a problem my local bike fitter can't get his head around
My Right upper leg is around 5mm shorter but i drop my hip on the left side off the saddle.
I ride a prologo dimension saddle now in 143mm iam a little bit under the limit to go wider
I can shim the right he said leg but won't it make the problem worse ?
Petty he doesn't have the wear with all to comprehend the Bunion/Ppigeon Toed shaped shoe does far more damage than a lack of mobility for an hour or so...
Might try getting out of the saddle and pumping on ya toes...
So what is the solution?
Walking and running
Mountain biking
Be nice to hear a solution from the OP
stop riding
Need some 'Foot Shaped' cycle shoes instead of all these pointy crap things on the market. No wonder there's a lack of circulation, its foot binding 😳🙄🤣
Try Lake shoes ('competition last' shape). Go for 'Wide' if you want extra space!
Solution. Roadies should train on a flat pedal XC in between road training . ( on a trail ) 😉
The key is grounding
I’ve gone back to flat pedals due to this. Is there another solution?
Yeah, I try to hike or run once for every four or five bike rides, or when it's too cold or wet to ride.
I feel a numbness in my right feet after so many kilometers ride. How can I minimize it?
Wider shoes.
Lake shoes, in 'competition last' shape. For extra space go for wide👍
Sometimes I like this guy. Other times I think he’s a complete knob.
Mate 100% with you on this one. - Neill
Been riding since 1992. My feet are fine. And so are everyone I know.
I envy you. I can only ride about 50-80km before foot pain means I need to take off my shoes for a few minutes. After that it's every 30km.
And no arms lol
Time to carry weights.
Your going too deep man , , try nailing plates to leather shoes oh the fun .🤔
What a plethora of bullshit.
😂 More like a cornucopia of naivety.
Look up 'venous foot pump'
'Located in the sole of your foot is a large group of veins that act as a built-in return pump. This group of veins is called the plantar venous plexus. Each time your foot hits the ground when you walk or run, the plantar venous plexus is flattened, stretched, and squeezed. This pumps blood back up to your heart.'
