F2P player who started in 2015 is in a completely different position compared to someone who started F2P in 2019, much more stuff to grind etc etc etc. After a freemium game becomes mature, the frustration involved with F2P increases exponentially but it would bad business for WG otherwise.

I'll second this tbh; I'm a CBT veteran with unicum stats in wows, so my personal bias is leaning towards "it's impossible to lose credits"
HOWEVER: my WoT career is much more average, clocking barely green stats over a decent amount of games. In WoT, the grind feels positively horrid compared to wows, especially credits/silver wise. On bad games I'll lose large amounts of silver if I run competitive loadouts, something unimaginable for me in wows.
Then moving on to warthunder, the story gets much, much worse (with me being an arguably better player relatively.)
I'd definitely say that, if you're looking to get into a game like wows after its hay day, you should ensure you have a good group to play with, and keep eachother motivated while also enjoying the statistical benefits of fighting in a division

Agreed. At first I thought they'll do more marathons where you get free tier 7 or below premium ships to supplement your grind without paying (not including the puerto rico here), but things have changed alot since then. I started a different new account on NA and what I did was find a recruiter code, the one that gives you a free Warspite for reaching tier 6, and grind enough coal to get a tier 9 premium ship in Armory. It's not much, but it's enough to stabilize my credits.

Started around early-mid 2018. At this point I have USN cruisers up to T6, Soviet Cruisers up to T6 and am more or less too broke to get anything else. (Doesn't help that I haven't been able to play since a bit before the CV Rework because my PC broke and I don't have one with good enough specs RN) Between subs, CV cancer and the fact that high tier isn't really that enticing I'm debating just quitting the game and focusing on War Thunder (then again the naval there is kinda bad). Only thing that is *sort of* motivating me to stick around is experiencing RU BBs that I wasn't able to play when they came out. Doesn't help that pepsicola is meh for me and the first (and only) time I played buddy I was killed by (an AI) Tirpitz. If I go back I'll probably stick at T5 (I have a decent commander for both my Omaha and Kirov) and stay there. Also doesn't help that I am terrible at random and have never survived (Don't remember if we won) the few times I've tried it.

I disagree. While the game is undoubtedly in a different place than it was in 2015, I feel it's actually better now for the F2P player. When I first started in late 2016 grinding as a F2P player was painfully slow and not even comparable to right now. There was only the beginner campaign to complete, which offered, at the time for a low tier player like me, decent enough rewards at best, but at times rather worthless ones too. There were no daily rewards missions, and there were practically no regular events offering free rewards for simply playing the game. Now there are 3 additional campaigns for F2P players to access, all offering exceptional rewards for their completion. There are an endless supply of daily missions to complete for free consumables, camos, signals, etc, just for playing at least 6 games a day. There is also a constant supply of directives with each new patch, offering not only access to the new tech tree lines close to full release, but just free stuff in general. In the past it was not particularly common to see people with sub-1000 games with a Tier 10 tech tree ship, now its all too common and no doubt closely linked with the increase in free stuff offered for simply playing the game, which F2P players benefit from as much from as anyone who has paid for premium time.

These russian ftp games are pretty blatantly predatory. It's gross. I've never given them a single dime, and I do just fine. I fought my way to republique, I have several tier 8 and 9 ships, and the only bottle neck I have is with silver. I'm starting to play this game today, and I've been watching some of these guides. But man, I may have bitten more than I could chew; I could barely wrap my head around some of these factors, and there's so many things you really need to study before getting into random battles. I'll probably have to keep rewatching these guides over and over again to internalize them.
I do wonder if I can keep playing battles tier 4 and below, since it feels tier 5 and above is where things get real serious

    F2P games in a nutshell:
You are playing a game that hates you. It hates everything about you except your money. By having the sheer audacity to not spend ALL of your money on it, you are wasting the developer's time. And for that It will do its level best to make you suffer. They won't outright break the rules (while enough people are watching at least), but you'd better believe they will use every last psychological dirty trick that money, marketing, and analytics can buy.

The two most important resources for F2P players are free XP and coal. Save these. Don’t spend them on little things.
You are going to need premium ships to keep the credits flowing. Especially at T8 and above.
The free premiums I would recommend to a new player are the T7 British Battleship Nelson for free xp and the T9 French Battleship Jean Bart.

I disagree 100%! and this is why. I feel that most F2P players are most likely to be people with less means. These people make less/have more responsibilities then the P2W players. This may be only IMO but its likely that they have a lower intelligence level then the ones with a high intellect/this they have more means. If you are not as intelligent as you then your level of sustainability will also be lower. I played as a F2Per till I reached T-8 using standard consumables only. If I use premium con. then I max out at T-6. In short IMO every one will need to find there own spot of sustainability.

I believe @Zouts that it was a bad wording of phrases and you didn't meant it.
I just don't think I will be paying for premium time or Premium t8, because I don't feel the need to. I have a couple of premium ships that I bought, because I wanted them, but I find WG to be a bit to much predatory with it's marketing, and there are literally millions, if not billions of other games to play (and also, non video games, like, do you know the board games Pandemic, Catan or Chez geek? What do you think of the reboot of Warhammer fantasy battle into Age of Sigmar?)
And last time I said that, I was call a cheap shot of player who don't want to support the game. I laughed in front of my screen, but that's not the point.
If only the "paying" (not P2W, but Pay 2 play) players remained, the game would lose more than 50% of its playerbase. Good luck wanting for game in those conditions, and having players using not optimal ships (I did not said OP, or blatantly broken, just "optimal") because it's fun, or they love it...
The "Free" community is also a part of this game, but I don't feel the love for them anymore.
I may stop this game, the same way I stopped WoT, Warthunder or Armored warfare a few years ago. The only difference will be that I will not feel that I lost something major, compared to a regularly paying player (But man, that would be a shame, I love this game and it has been a huge part of my entertainment those last years...)
PS : I have only a few T8 and 9, I use premium consumables on the ships after T5 to keep being efficient, as much as possible, and yes, I'm broke as hell, can't afford the new ships I unlock, and I can't just play and farm credits because : bad internet connexion for a few months, and other interests in life that kept me busy)

Next month though they'll throw the complete meta into the blender with these new upgrade modules, so it'll be a brand new game once again and who knows what that's gonna be like. Great video. I am F2P player who started WOWS last month, with an invite code. I recently unlocked the Warspite and managed to get the Aigle for coal (with 25% coupon in game). I have so far only played in Co-Op to learn the game and grind out the Warspite and loads of flags and camos. I wish this video was available when I started to make it easier to understand all this stuff, but I eventually did without much waste. I did mess up (somewhat) one of the free 10 skill commanders, and don't want to waste my (free earned) doubloons to reset the commander just yet.

New F2P player here. I knew this game existed but I only started playing during the last week of Regia Marina. I regretted not starting sooner because I missed out on the Italians :(
I'm kinda at a struggling spot because I want to reach that sustainability you said in this video, because real life happens. And I pretty much play as a no clan solo player out of fear of being kicked out, because, again, I can get busy with real life.
But I gotta admit, I never thought of using only essential camos, flags, and consumables to boost battle performance because I'm trying to save those up for later tiers, so thank you for pointing that out. At least now I know the solution to one problem, and that is earning enough credits. You just earned a new sub. :)

As a F2P player myself I can say that collections like the Yamamoto collection are far from useless. Yes, they don't give any great rewards by themselves, but they can be activated indefinitely. That means you don't have to finish them, which in turn means that you can accumulate duplicates whenever there's no other collection around that has to be done by a certain date. Right now, I have 132 duplicates waiting for me and only 36/40 items collected. Even if I find these 4 one right after the other, that's still 132*15,000 = nearly 1,980,000 credits.
That's 2mio credits for basically doing nothing. Given that the last items are statistically the most difficult to find, I fully expect 3+ Mio to be the ultimate payout.
Apropos collections: these are also a great way to save up on these premium days. With unfinished collections (juuuust enough duplicates on the most recent one *phew*) and unopened WG containers I'm now sitting on 9 premium days that I can activate whenever I want. Instead of wasting the premium on a day I can barely play a couple of games, I can now wait for a mission that requires me to earn X credits/XP and do this mission while getting 150% out of my carefully hoarded flags.
The premium bonus is quite important because unlike other bonuses that it stacks multiplicatively with flags and camos instead of simply adding to them. Even a single day of premium is great to get the most out these precious economy flags during an event!

I'm a more recent F2P player (picked it up at the tail end of 2019 during the whole Puerto Rico bullshit) and I have a few things to say about the F2P experience.
1: I don't know if it's me, but it seems like most every game I don't contribute anything beyond a free kill for the enemy team. Sure there are a few games where I actually make an impact, and the very rare game where I'm the best player on my team. But most of the time I feel like I'm deliberately being matched against players above my skill level (not least because I'm almost always uptiered).
2: This game is not very friendly to F2P. Beyond the obscene amounts of resources required to do anything (including multi-line grinding), it almost feels like you're punished for not paying real money. While I understand at the root of it WoWs is a skill-based game, it feels like Wargaming will put their finger on the scale for players who have paid a little more than others.
3: There have been plenty of times where I have logged out of the game feeling more enraged than when I started (related to my first point). This game has caused me to put holes in my wall. I know that the common point is that I'm not very skilled at this game, yet I can't stop trying to get better, and always my efforts prove fruitless. I don't know if it's because of me or not, but it honestly feels like the game is skewed heavily in favor of longtime players and people who pay.
In the end, I guess it really doesn't matter, since I'm just one potato in a whole sea of potatoes. I just wanted to vent a little bit, and this video seemed like a good place to put this out.
    Back to salt mining.

      I feel you.
The game mechanics are complex, so only few players really understand how to position and use their ship to their strenghs.
WG keeps its matchmaker in a terrible state (-2 +2 tier gap, no MMR to spread skilled players equally), and doesnt fix some ships (T4 CV are too strong, broken UK BB
HE design, HE spammers, the list goes on..), so it makes the overall experience very hard for most of us - especially the new guys.

The Pyro Jawsome Quick question for you. Did you download WOWS and go through your initial account creation during the latter days of 2019? The reason I am asking you this is two fold. Up front I’d like to welcome you to the fleet. So reason #1: if you are a very new player (you still have that new player smell, like a new car), you honestly have no clue about what you do not know yet. There are so many game related mechanics you may not even know exist. That is not said as a dig at you as a player. There really is not any kind of formal tutorial to introduce new players to even the basic mechanics of the game. Of course a UA-cam search will bring up lots of WOWS videos, some of these are either old/outdated and irrelevant or they are entertaining examples of “unicorns doing unicorn things.” iChase gaming has several great tutorial type video series here on his channel. iChase has also started the process of updating any of his “Captain’s Academy” tutorials that may have become outdated due to game patch updates. Reason#2: the mere fact that you are here watching a WOWS tutorial video so early in your WOWS experience indicates your desire to improve. That alone places above 75% of all new players as well as a vast majority of seasoned players. As frustrating as things are for you today, continue your grind. There will be a day, likely in the near future, where suddenly things, for you & the game mechanics, will snap into place. They key to reaching this place of “WOWS Zen” is patience and study. Do not try to grind multiple lines and ship types at once. Find one that is both comfortable as well as “mechanical forgiving” and use that ship/tech tree line as your springboard. DO NOT rush up a tech tree line. Your lack of experience and grasp of the basics will only be exasperated at the higher tiers. This in turn will only frustrate you even more.
You may also have other players in game shout at you the tired old mantra of “go back to co-op.” Personally I believe this is the most useless advice anyone can give a new player. While yes the game mechanics remain the same, the behavior of the bots is totally different to the behavior of an actual player. Excessive co-op play will lead to the enforcement of both bad habits on your part and false expectations of the behavior of enemies in battle. Your game mechanics education is best done against other “live” players. Also as suggested by iChase, find a social clan to join. There are a great many good social clans within WOWS that are a great place to meet like minded players and further your WOWS education.
Good luck Captain! If you are on the NA server, look us up. Clan tag is PlanB. I am MagnumMike in game. We are always ready to help new players. Player base growth is the key to game life cycle extension. GLHF!

      @LMMSDeadDuck 4 роки тому +1

It's very true that the game heavily favors longtime players, but that is unavoidable. A new player won't know to protect his/her citadel, or switch ammo when AP bounces, etc. etc. It comes with either watching lots and lots of instructional videos, which still won't teach someone to react appropriately under fire, or ... just spending lots of time under fire. There are just a lot of hidden mechanics. As a double-whammy: since the game is more mature now there are experienced players that return to lower tiers to either grind out new lines of ships or use their experience against newer folks. This can make it very frustrating for new players. But I also agree with Michael Fouse that Co-Op can reinforce bad habits and so you don't want to rely on that to learn.
I feel that watching videos online as well as grinding the ships up a line in random battles are the best way to learn mechanics of the game. (That means don't try to use your free xp to skip tiers until you feel more comfortable in the game.) I also always thought lower tiers were more forgiving. (ie, You *might* get away with sailing broadsides to a BB in a cruiser since their dispersion was greater.) Disclaimer: It's been awhile since I was new and there have been many changes since I started so it might not a be correct statement now. It will be frustrating and you'll die a lot - I did, too. But the best way to approach it is to consciously learn a new factoid about the game every session / week. It could be something as vague as "cruisers sailing sideways to large enough caliber guns can take massive damage to their citadels" or something specific as "x torpedoes will give me y seconds of reaction time ..."
      Good luck!

As a F2P player who just finished my 1st week playing the game, thanks for the videos. F2P is a mindset (kind of like the 1st video in series talked about). I'm in no rush to get "to the top", but simply enjoy every tier and learning how to get better. I'm actually surprised I already have a tier V BB and tier IV everything else. If it takes a year, or 2 to reach tier X, I don't care. My goals are to learn to be a formidable opponent no matter what ship I'm playing and to have fun. A potato in the most OP ship, is still a potato. A dangerous, thinking opponent in the most underpower ship is still dangerous. (I learned that playing tanks for years)

Don't rush towards the high tiers. If you're starting out, invest in mid tier ships, particularly tiers 5-7. These tiers are profitable, so use them to stockpile credits and free exp. You can also train 19 point captains in them for your eventual high tier ships.
Gameplay-wise, mid tiers gain access to defensive fire AA, which is very handy in defending your ship and others against enemy aviation.

I'd go a step further: You want that first 19-point commander ideally be sitting on a very strong silver tech tree ship for which you can get a 'free' permanent camouflage (i.e. that you can get by only spending in-game resources, meaning coal), so you can keep playing that ship and commander to generate more Elite Commander XP even after grinding through that ship. For me, that ideal ship is *HMS Lightning,* and F2P players should definitely go up the *British destroyer line* first. To get the Lightning perma camo, all you need to do is spend very little coal on one single Royal Navy Destroyers container from the Armory. That will drop the first item of the RN DD collection, which can then be "switched on", so that the rest of the collection items drop from the daily containers. Only very few collections do this. The only other free perma camo you can get with similar ease is for USS Cleveland. That is another very strong tech tree ship but arguably, the grind there is harder. The British destroyers are perfectly OK on all the low tiers and get really good, not to say overpowered, at Tier VII. I was admittedly a bit lucky in getting HMS Gallant from some event when trying this strategy, which made it easier to train that first 19-pt commander.
You can also get free permanent camos for Monarch, Z-23, Charles Martell, Kiev and New Orleans from the 2-year Anniversary containers. But since the collection cannot be switched on, you need to buy about a dozen or more of those, and at 1,000 coal, each one of those containers represents about a full gaming day's earnings. So you can get lucky but it could delay your grind to Smolensk by about three weeks or more. And arguably, those the ships are... not as strong as Lightning. The same goes for Bismarck, whose free perma camos you get from the Hunt for the Bismarck collection. Also the 2-year perma camos don't even give a Ship XP bonus, only a Commander and Free XP bonus, which is a bit dumb.
The other thing is that you should definitely try to get a four-star win on the *Operations* that are done with Tier VI ships, because those will give you free 10-.pt commanders for the German, American and Japanese navies. Now those, arguably, are a bit hard to do with destroyers if you are a beginner, so in order to do them, so you want to quickly grind out two or three Tier VI BBs or cruisers. For that purpose, I again recommend the British lines, at least as far as the BBs go, because starting with Tier IV, the British BBs are the only ones besides the Russians that have some serious flak, so you won't be quite as completely defenseless against aircraft carriers as in all other lines.
Oh and speaking of aircraft carriers, the most important info is of course that you're basically just fodder for those, while their gameplay has nothing to do with what you originally come to this game for. So, you know. *Don't start playing this game.*

Keep in mind one thing that F2P games don't tell players.
    *YOU* are content.
The devs want you to pay, but they still need you, the player, to be the target for other PVPers, or the support for a COOP team, etc. That's why you have all the promotions, discounts, and giveaways. They need incentives to keep you logging in, playing constantly, and not quitting because all the Good Stuff is cash-only. They know that not everyone is going to/can afford to pay for premium content all the time. So they make it available through grinding, that way there is always a pretty solid player base. In this manner, you are content for paying customers and whales. Never forget that, and you'll understand the business model. After all, game-devs have to pay bills too, servers cost money to run, and there will always be an attempt to add new content and gameplay to keep the ball rolling.

One thing you did not mention. It is possible it is my imagination but money and consumables are so critical to F2P - I have never spent a penny on this game, btw. If I log on and I lose 3 matches in a row, I make the assumption that the game has dumped me into a bad matrix. Some people call this an RNG issue, but I think it goes deeper. When I am losing those first three, if I play ten games, it seems like I have a very good chance baring a miracle of losing them all. The reverse is also true. If I win the first three battles, I play until I get my 3rd container and then I log off. If I lose the first three I log for the day and come back tomorrow and hope for a better matrix. It kept me from going broke and using my consumables with any return. It also kept me from going insane and most of all, it greatly improved my stats.
I also never went into a clan or joined a division. I played completely solo. But everything else you mentioned, I did and it works.

As a F2P player I totally agree on most things said, but overoptimising can take the fun out of things and it's a game afterall. Do something stupid once in a while, like get a PayToRico for free because after all these Missions, Events, etc. with their containers and rewards you will also have accumulated some Gold^^ (or do spend it whisely, like for example when port slots are on discount...)
Maybe to add something I missed hearing is to make use of all the game modes the game offers to be the most efficient when doing doing missions/campaigns/events, e.g. do 15 cits in T5+ ships and it is possible in Coop and/or Operations do it there. Bots broadside you all the time, getting 15 cits can be done in a single Coop battle that takes no longer then 5 mins if you're a bit lucky
Or do some grinding of T6/7 ships in the Operations, once you know the patterns/spawns and maybe have some friends for divisioning up with you can powergrind ships there easily.

Oxy Moron . There’s absolutely no reason to rush to t10, the ships get stronger but, at the end of the day, it’s the same game. Been playing 3 years and only just played t10 using a rental for clan battles. Getting above t5 is useful as that’s the threshold for many missions, and there’s also a T8 threshold for some campaigns. Take your time and enjoy the mid tier games, and use them to save resources for t10 where even victories can drain your lockers.

I play as a Free Player since CBT.
You not need premium consumables. What you need is to PLAY AND LEARN EVERY SINGLE SHIP CLASS. But you MUST USE CAMO ALWAYS.
Also if there is an event where you can get a Free premium ship. DO IT. JUST DO IT.
Actually that's all what a free player must do, learn the game, learn how to play each class, and use any free chance to get free ships.
The most important thing is LEARN THE SHIPS ALL.

The main frustration I have as a free to play player is a lack of dock slots but not a single mention of that in this video....

i am in the top 100 for amount played and all of it F2P for 5 years. This game gave me tons of the best ships completely free including the best ships in the game. The value of all the free content is in the thousands if i paid for it. Its an amazing game if you avoid the normal F2P traps, player dev fights, and just play. I contribute buy purchasing ships in accordance to a yearly AAA game budget. For all the fun and friends its been a steal. Avoid ship chasing to the point where it overrides the fun of just playing. Let the ships come as they may and great ship will come free in abundance.

So at first .. Sry for my bad english .. But 1 thing i miss .. The potential of Operation Narai. So let say you wana earn Free EP .. So you can use all that flags / Camos you collect and get an solid amount.. Every run. So in my opinion its better to use the flags there than in rnd battles. No matter what you are Farming : Captains EP / Free EP or credits. For example .. Lyon .. whit Credit Camo and all singals ~ 900 k Credits each round. Fiji whit full free EP build and 200 % Free Ep Camo ~ 10 K Free Ep

I played for a while and even went to the USS New Jersey for Anchors Away. Got all the ARP ships. Got a good range of ships going for me. And that's where you failed to mention one very important thing for someone going F2P. You get 5 port slots to start with. Ships you get through events while staying F2P come with slots so you're safe there. But if you don't pay the 300 doubloons for 1 slot, you will have to scrap your freshly promoted ship to get the next one in the line. With over 250 ships in game and more coming, that is not reasonable. So if you want more ships and like to bounce around the tiers and classes, YOU WILL HAVE TO BUY PORT SLOTS. Personally, I have over 100 ships now and have bought a few that I wanted from the Premium lines (the HSF Herakaze was just screaming to be bought), but now after dumping a crapload of cash into the Puerto Rico before grasping that it just was in no way going to happen (unless I wanted to dump another $70 USD into completing it), I am tired of WoWS. It was a great run for a long time, but they just blew me from the water for the last time.

Games like this and war thunder I'd pay a solid sum for to just buy and have it be like a normal game where nothing that impacts gameplay is locked behind more purchases, and there's nothing like a "premium" membership that you have to keep paying for over and over.

Played 4 yrs +, never used a dime.....I dont have lots of ships (9) and I manage ok...and got some "money" in the bank. I play maybe 6-8 games aday...to get flags etc. Sad about the game is all the ppl that have NO clue how to play their ships or got the idea what to do as support and cap. I think the game gone bad last 2 yrs, so I play less than I used to.
    Fav.ships: Kremlin, DM and GK.
    Montana/Bismarck I liked, not anymore
I got a WR of 52%, played 12k+ games...so I am not very good at this tho lol
Like your vids, informative and I learned a great deal from them...wish more watched them and learned to play better.

Something your missing in your ship reviews.
A ship’s usefulness in co op for directives.
An example would be the “othornick?” This ship is indispensable for me to score torpedo hits fast.
I hit the gas a cut the wheel hard as soon as I spot the dd. Proceed to make the boys play torpedo beat.
This could literally be a whole series that no one else is doing.

Hi IChase; I've been playing WoWS completely for free for more than a year now (October 2018, tho i did had a 5 months break due to IRL priorities) and I'm actually at a very good point if i do say so myself: I'm at tier 8 with some ships (Amagi, Bismarck and Shokaku) and i'm working towards the Izumo, however, i don't take them out that often tho due to the economy at those tiers (8, 9 and 10) being... what it is let's say :) so i don't take them out that often, especially the Shokaku; tho i'm a good enough player that i'm able to avoid or at least mitigate credit losses. I don't even use Premium Consumables (i do keep a certain number of them tho); my gameplay has adapted that way and it's fine. I do sell the stock modules once I have bought the upgraded one (i.e. I sell the A hull once i got the B hull and so on). I do have some premuim ships, all aquired for free: Georgia (with coal and coupon of course), Texas (Supercontainer), Dunkerque and Anshan (2018 Santa Containers), Emden (from the Giveaway) and Mutsu (recently aquired from a Supercontaier). I do use some camos, but i prefer to save up camos (the ones you can't get for credits) for when i get Premium account from somewhere to maximize it's effectivnes. The one thing i still don't have is a 19 points Captain; my highest is Admiral Hipper at 14 points.
My main problem are "perma-camos" i do have some of them, but they are very few.
    Great video anyway.

To those thinking of playing this game. Matches are won by the side with the most premium ships. So if your not ready to shell out $100 or more don't bother with anything past tier 6. This is coming from someone who has played since open Beta.

I'm a f2p for like 2 years now... My only issue is credits... Everything else I can manage but since the randomness of the battles, sometimes I'm really good, others I'm shit... And those shit battles, like random torpedoes killing you, cost more than you earn so... You go negative... I'm in so much debt right now that I can't play my only t10, the khaba, because of the cost of playing it... And no premium account make your like so hard..

Jingles grinding CVs gave me a new idea for an initiative to incentivise WG to #FixCVs some more. To celebrate the wonderful CV rework, let's get all the best players, streamers, youtubers and CCs to *only play CVs the next patch.* All day every day. The goal is to have three CVs in as many games as possible. Call it *#MonthOfTheCV**.* Spread the word.

when i first joined i somehow arrived in the asia group and and a shau clan. Can I SOMEHOW switch to NA without loosing everything I have thus far?
Early on i thought i needed premium.......and i thought, OK, i will try it for a week for 7$. That was a while ago. I cannot find where And how i paid for this. I keep getting windows that say something like premium will expire in 18 hours..... Is this thing a self renewing thing... thanks in advance.
