At the time, Sweden didn't know that they were World Champions yet. An experimental system was used in 1973 whereby any results played in preliminary Groups were included in the Final group, so Sweden met China long before they each knew they were the 'Finalists'- (and had already 'played' the Final). Instead they had to await the outcome of other matches to see who was the Champion. Hence no big celebrations. And, needless to say, the experiment was not repeated-everyone loves a proper Final.

It is the same Liang Geliang - in 1973 he switched to an attacking style, apparently for political reasons: Mao's wife didn't like his defence with medium pips and called it "unfriendly". See interview on ooakforum.

Sweden actually had a better team than this in 71 with Stellan Bengtsson(Won the singles), Kjell Johansson and Hans Alser, which was European champ at the time.

Well VS08540, 'unfriendly"= 'tricky" . . . Whatever that would have meant . . . He was truly great . . . both ways . . . Should have won at least ONE Singles . . . Not allowed to win against Kohno . . . "But I never won a world’s in singles myself. In 1977 in Birmingham I wasn’t allowed to win against the Japanese Kono (sic), whom I’d beaten five times straight in the Asian Games, and in 1979 in PyongYang it was the same against Ono"

Chinese table tennis has always been a mess anyway.Always trying to cut corners with trickery and match fixing.Cai Zhenhua with his antispin rubber was the ultimate trickster and his successor Liu Guoliang was also a one-trick pony trickster.

@@Galimah Guo Yuehua never played in a Team final after 1979 to be fresh for singles. He was a semi finished product trying to play like a Hungarian looper despite not having a backhand whatsoever.Still benefitted from Cai Zhenhua clearing up the field for him.

Funny, how business-like the final point is. Kjell wins the point-set-match-world championship and... no jumping up and down, no cho (or ossa), no fist pump... not even a smile and or a yell. As if Sweden won this world championship every year since ancient times. Great match by Stellan, by the way - he gave three points, and Liang Geliang lost all three of his - those two guys basically determined the outcome.
