I picked this game up with all its character packs at local game shop to support their business during the pandemic, but the instructions included in the box were very hard to follow. Having watched your video really helped me realize what I was interpreting wrong and now I think I’m ready to teach my online friends how to do it so we can play on discord! Thanks a lot man I knew I could count on you!
Your the king of instructional videos Rodney. I kickstarted this and when I got everything I just used the Hero packs. Love this game, can't wait for the campaign to come out this year. My daughter and I play it a lot. I sleeved all the cards (except the double sided ones) with Ultra-pro non glare matte sleeves. The cards have black boarders so the sleeves will keep them safe and they don't slide around due to being Pro-matte. I also bought a nice metal card holder with a lined inside to keep them all together, like a mini briefcase. I guess I must really love the game. :) Keep up the great work, I always look forward to your video's
you said during your discard phase that your champions go back to the ready position. However, you have an example where if an opponent guard is not prepared then you can bypass that to do damage to the other players health. how does a guard or Champion remain unprepared on your opponent's turn?
There are cards that tap another player's champion, making them tap a guard in your turn. If you do this before attacking, you can attack them, while bypassing the champion. If you play with 2+ players, a player's champion will be tapped until they finish their turn, making it possible to ignore this champion for quite some turns. Right? :D
Your enthusiasm, video production quality and clarity is what keeps me coming back to your videos. They are clean, clear and precise. I play a lot, and I mean a lot of games with my family and others as well. So your videos help me learn new games and relearn rules I forgot, like this video on Hero Realms. I love Star Realms, couldn't get enough so I got Hero Realms as well and the expansions. However I also recently got Epic by the same guys and White Wizard Games and am struggling with it. Do you have a video or plan on making one about that game as well? Thanks in advance.
Awesome tutorial / how to play as always! It was explained very clearly and it was absolutely what I was looking for! I instantly purchased it after finishing the video! Thanks again for your hard work and can't wait for future playthroughs!
Thanks for the kind words Mabi, and great to hear you found the video helpful. I hope you have a great time playing (and we just released a game play video for this game today :) )
Thank you so much for this video! I got this to pay with my 8 year old who is starting to love more 'advanced games' (Machi Koro, Dominion) and we were totally stumped by the written instructions. This got us playing quickly and we're having a lot of fun! Very appreciated!
Brilliant, thanks Rodney, was hoping you would do a how to on this. Although it doesn't appear to be a hard game to learn to play, I've got so many new games from Christmas I am struggling to learn them all and keep the knowledge in my head. Keep up the great work!
Re: 13:50 when would your opponent ever have an "expended" guard champion when your trying to attack? At the end of my opponent's turn, their expended cards are put back into "ready" mode, right?
Great tutorial. Always enjoy your videos. Fantastic game. I picked up at Origins this past week, and have played it over 10 times, and taught 4 new people how to play. I will enjoy this one for some time, and have already ordered all the expansions!
14:02 If every champion automatically is reset to "prepared" at the end of the owner's turn, then how can they be found "expended" by the opponent (for them to ignore a Guard)? Makes no sense.
Perfect and clear explanation as always! Always use your videos for reference or refreshers! Just ordered Hero Realms and so excited! I love Star Realms, but my brother and friends prefer the fantasy setting so I went with Hero Realms!
Wow!! THIS sounds just like my style of deck-building game! With fantasy, RPG-like theme, I think this video convinced me to order both the base game and the five classes expansion! This looks tons of fun with high replay value! I can't wait to try this game out.
So, quick question for clarification. Is the Campaign deck and boss card packs not available yet by what you said? Do you have any idea of when they will be available?
Guard champions don't guard while they're expended, but they prepare at the end of each of my turns anyway. Do you know of any situations in which a champion might be expended on my opponent's turn?
I came to this thread for this exact purpose. I don't understand why they need to be tapped and untapped in the same turn. What is the purpose they're just like the bases in Star realms and there is no need to tap the bases. Is there any clarity on this, yet?
Rocky Pierce I think it's a mistake in the rules. It doesn't make sense to tapped and untapped the guard or champion cards in the same turn. I see (on UA-cam) a gamer, who plays it the way to untapped the guard at the beginning on his next turn, so it become a strategic choice to guard yourself or don't guard but use the special action of the guard card. Maybe white wizard will clarify the rules, when they aren't so busy (or lazy) someday ;)
@winterseele I contacted the whitewizard and it's not a mistake. You are supposed to tap and untap in the same turn. It's just like Star Realms, but Star Realms didn't require you to tap them. The reason for tapping them is to remember that you used it this turn. Some of them say use it for money or attack or health and you could forget you used it. Untap at the end of your turn and play like normal.
Question. Say that I play recruit. Do I get both of the primary abilities or do I have to choose? Or is that rule only for cards that have the “or” in the description?
Hi Dave, can you provide a time stamp to the section of the video you are asking about? I shot this long enough ago, I want to make sure I know what you're referring to.
Thanks for the great explanation. I have now decided that the small differences, and slightly more in-depth aspects of Hero Realms compared to Star Realms is worth having the awesome fantasy flavor of Hero Realms. The only thing I am sad about is that Guards cannot protect you when they expend themselves. I know that Torgen would be overpowered if he could both force a discard and protect you for 7 each turn, but if he can only choose 1, he actually seems very weak for a 7 gold card. Although, since I haven’t played this yet, I will try it out before judging the mechanic any further. Thanks again for this video.
Actually, I just realized something. Since you prepare your champions at the end of your turn, that means Torgen can force the opponent to discard a card, then prepare to protect you on your opponents turn. That makes me wonder though, when would a Champion ever be expended during your opponents turn, so the guard effect wouldn’t work, like you mentioned in the video? Just curious if you found a card that could make use of that mechanic.
Thank you for the clear video! I played a few games and I have one question: What is the point of the expend ability ? It seems to me you can expend any hero every turn, so what does it add to the game ? Thank you!

A lot of years but I still have a question. When a card says that a player removes a card from his hand. is it the players will or do you take from his hand? And does he/she draw cards up to five or are left with less cards?
I do by best to answer all rules questions on the games I cover, but I avoid individual card effects, as that's a level of detail beyond what I can manage across all the videos I do. I can answer the second part of your question though, as that's more of a general rule: no, you wouldn't draw back up. For the other question I'd suggest checking the rules forum for the game on BoardGameGeek or the publishers website. I hope you can find your answer there - have fun playing!
Are cards that say discard or sacrifice from hand or discard pile mandatory? Some say "you may" others just "discard", but in the app we have the option of not doing it, in both cases.

Question: How does adding more than 4 players work? I have 2 copies of Hero Realm but I am still unsure if I combine both the market deck together. Btw Amazing video with easy to follow instructions. I was able to use to this to help teach my friends the rules.
First of all, i really enjoyed your video, it was pretty clear and fun to watch, but i have a question. What should drive me to NOT USE the five cards that i draw every turn? I mean, if im always dicarding them at the end of the turn, why wouldnt i use them all? Is there anything am i missing or that leaves a little lack of strategy when thinking in the next turns?.
Thanks for the kind words about the video - glad you enjoyed! And yes, you've got it - you would generally always want to play the cards you have in your hand.
If a card says you can sacrifice a card in your hand, does that apply to cards you have all ready played, or only if you kept it in your hand? Sorry for the silly question.
Great tutorial as always. One question, When you play your character ability, you get the 2 gold or you have to pay 2 gold and then you can activate the ability?
Besides the Art and Theme, is this basically the same as Star Realms? We already have Star Realms and love it. This game looks great but I don't want the same basic game as Star Realms just in a different theme. What is your opinion? Thank you!
I think the best bet might be to watch the video and see if you find it to be different enough - I'm not sure I can say for someone else if it will be what they are looking for.
Hi Rodney, love your videos...if that guard (with 7 health) were in play for example and I had 10 combat to spend...could I spend 7 to take out the guard and then apply the remaining 3 to another champion or the player?
I have a question, if an opponent`s guard champion uses his ability and then at the end of turn is prepared again how can i catch that champion expended and ignore him in my turn?
I think they built that feature in for potential cards that could exhaust a guard champion during a turn. As you say, it doesn't do much in the core box.
Say I play 5 cards, and at least one of those tells me to draw another card. Do I resolve my 5 first cards first, or will my new card also be resolved at the same time? For instance, if I drew a champion as part of my hand at first, I place it down and I exhaust him for combat points. If my new card (that I drew as an addition) tells me to refresh a champion, does that mean I can play my champion once more? Does my new card (that I drew in addition to my original hand of 5) count towards ally abilites as well?
You can play the cards in your hand in any order. So you could choose to play 1 that gives you the ability to draw before playing the rest. You could also refresh and re-use a champion, like in the example you gave. Lastly, the new card that you draw does count towards your ally abilities too, possibly even activating the ally abilities of cards you played previously (if they hadn't been activated already).
I’m confused, the way you explained it seems to make wether the champion is prepared or not redundant. If you prepare all the champions at the end of your turn, when would a champion ever not be prepared during your opponents turn? Am I missing something?
Rodney, Do i have to play all the card in my hand in a turn? If no then what happen to cards that are still left in my hand? do i have to discard them?
Hey guys thx for the vid, great tutorial! Just bought my copy not so long ago along with the hero pack and an interesting situation occurred: we played wizard vs cleric and both of us got massive heal combos and we just could not out dmg the healing we got every other turn. does the game have some special rules regarding "when does the game end" when both players simply can not kill eachother? like a time limit or when the market runs out, whoever has the most HP wins? Thank you for your answer in advance. G
Sorry, I'm not quite sure I understand your questions. If something doesn't have a cost, than it would be free... but I don't have a copy of the game in front of me to be able to give you specific examples. A champion are acquired like other cards.
why wouldn't you gain 11 health? you have 2 cards with symbols matching other cards. is it only when matching symbols are played after the initial card played?
@@spookytkid Please provide the time (minutes and seconds). I get a lot of comments to respond to all the time. I am not able to go hunting through the video to find the spot you are trying to ask about. You tell me the spot. I'll go to it, and try to help you out. Cheers.
@@spookytkid Ah yes, I see what you're saying. In this case I'm just specifically talking about the card on the left, so I only mention the 6 health it is adding. As you notice though, in a game, if both cards were played, you'd get the benefits of the card on the right as well. Let me put it another way: "As soon as you have two or more cards of the same faction in play, you may trigger all relevant Ally Abilities. They may be used at any time during your Main Phase, and each may only be used once per turn."
It's been awhile since I shot this - what do I say here? Do you have a time stamp for the section you are asking about? If it helps, we work with the publisher on these videos, so if I say a particular way in the video, that usually means it's right (unless the publisher also got it wrong, which can happen, but it's rare).
You states in your video that whenever you use the sacrifice ability, you can first use other abilities on the same card. I know it is been a while, so it is all good. The rules for the game leave a lot of room for interpretation. But don’t worry about it.
If I have 2 champions from the same faction and they both have ally abilities. Would their ally abilities trigger or is it only when you play a card of the same faction?
Yep, the Champions can unlock the ally abilities of other champions. basically, any cards in play, can be used to unlock the ability of another card in play (as long as the symbols match).
So say I have two imperial champions on the battlefield, can I use both abilities or only one? Also if I have an imperial champion on the battlefield and I have an imperial action card and I play it, can I use both actions or only one, or only the one on the battlefield? Thanks. Great video as always! :)
Can you check this part of the video for me and let me know if it addresses your question: ua-cam.com/video/aDdmA_zLeBY/v-deo.htmlm32s - if not, then I may not be completely understanding the questions. Cheers!
Watch It Played ok let me rephrase. If you have two of one type on the field, can you use both ally abilities or only 1? PS: I'm on mobile so I can't view the link
To use an expend ability, turn the card sideways to gain the effect listed after the expend symbol. You may do this at any point during the Main Phase. You'll see more details at 11:47 in the video. Hope that helps!
I love this game and I play Star Realms quite often also. I have a nagging question though.. When a card tells you to "draw a card" this means you draw from your own deck, NOT the market deck. Have I been playing correctly?
First of all thanks for the great video again! The game is already quite old as it seems, but for me it was new and the video was much easier to understand then the (german) manual. And allthough we are pretty sure we play it correctly, it just doesnt feel like it (1v1 only so far). Championns never ever survive a round which makes them feel like a spell with extra health. Thus it doesnt really feel like a good deck-building game but rather like a mostly random "who can buy the strongest spells and draw them game". Cant really see any counterplay or whatsover. Whats your opinion on that?
Hi Michael, I don't offer review content on the games I teach - experiences with a game can vary wildly based on all kinds of factors (which can include the game design, but also things outside of it). I wouldn't want to try to convince you one way or the other.
There’s a free app you can download and also play this game. Comes with tutorial. Only two free classes but hey plenty fun can be had without paying and you get to learn the game.
Back then I ran fundraisers to financially support the show (I work on the show full time). If you donated at a certain level you'd get producer credits. So yep, all of those people were quite literally producing the show.

There are cards that tap another player's champion, making them tap a guard in your turn. If you do this before attacking, you can attack them, while bypassing the champion. For the other question I'd suggest checking the rules forum for the game on BoardGameGeek or the publishers website. I hope you can find your answer there - have fun playing!
@@WatchItPlayed Thanks :)
Are cards that say discard or sacrifice from hand or discard pile mandatory? Some say "you may" others just "discard", but in the app we have the option of not doing it, in both cases.

@@Mimgreen Sorry I wasn't able to give a more thorough answer!
Great explanation... thanks man for your video
You're very welcome!
Question: How does adding more than 4 players work? I have 2 copies of Hero Realm but I am still unsure if I combine both the market deck together.
Btw Amazing video with easy to follow instructions. I was able to use to this to help teach my friends the rules.
Thanks for the kind words about the video Kevin. We didn't cover the 4 player mode, so I don't have the details on that.
Hey! Wonderful tutorial. Do champions with ally abilities trigger their ally abilities only when they're played or every turn they aren't stunned?
Just when they are played.
If a card says you can sacrifice a card in your hand, does that apply to cards you have all ready played, or only if you kept it in your hand? Sorry for the silly question.
No worries Daniel - it means cards you have in hand (unplayed)
Can you do a video on Star Realms? I just it's standalone expansion Frontiers and am still figuring it out
Thanks for the interest! I talk a bit about that here: ua-cam.com/video/EdtDuvIUa6A/v-deo.html&t=342
Hi Rodney, so for 2 player game, the Heroes are "near by" all the time right, so they can always help each other because nobody is in between?
Right!
oh YES!! I think I will love this game, can't wait to see a play through!!!
Coming Wednesday!
Great tutorial as always. One question, When you play your character ability, you get the 2 gold or you have to pay 2 gold and then you can activate the ability?
Do you have a time stamp for the section of the video you are asking about?
Besides the Art and Theme, is this basically the same as Star Realms? We already have Star Realms and love it. This game looks great but I don't want the same basic game as Star Realms just in a different theme. What is your opinion? Thank you!
I think the best bet might be to watch the video and see if you find it to be different enough - I'm not sure I can say for someone else if it will be what they are looking for.
@@WatchItPlayed Ok, I appreciate the reply.
Hi Rodney, love your videos...if that guard (with 7 health) were in play for example and I had 10 combat to spend...could I spend 7 to take out the guard and then apply the remaining 3 to another champion or the player?
Correct. You spend the points in your pool individually. So you could assign the first 7 to knock out the guard, and the remaining 3 as you like.
Thanks! This is very helpful, and makes this deck building game less intimidating.
So glad to hear you found it helpful!
Thanks for the video. Do you plan on doing a Star Realms Frontiers video?
I talk a bit about that here: ua-cam.com/video/EdtDuvIUa6A/v-deo.html&t=342
Well I have another game to add my list to buy
Thanks for checking it out!
Should we play all of our cards in our hand our we can play 1 2 3 or how many we like?
You don't have to play all your cards, but remember, during the Discard Phase, you discard any you didn't play.
@@WatchItPlayed so we should have new five cards in next round and cant remain?
@@javaaad Correct.
Do I need character pack in order to play this? Or it can be played without character pack?
You do not. You'll find this explained in the video. Hope it helps.
Amazing how to play video. Thank you!
Thank you kindly!
I’m confused, the way you explained it seems to make wether the champion is prepared or not redundant. If you prepare all the champions at the end of your turn, when would a champion ever not be prepared during your opponents turn? Am I missing something?
This rule is to accommodate expansions and cards where this could matter.
Rodney, Do i have to play all the card in my hand in a turn? If no then what happen to cards that are still left in my hand? do i have to discard them?
+Công Chính Bùi Nope, you can't carry any over to the next round.
Was so useful ty mate ♥
You're very welcome!
You're very welcome!
Do champions enter play when they are bought or when they are played? The rules are unspecific on this topic.
They go into your discard play when purchased and must be played later.
G
The rules did not have a solution for that, as far as I could see.
So how do you acquire a champion? I have a “Follower” abd it has no gold points. There are items too which have no cost. What gives?
Sorry, I'm not quite sure I understand your questions. If something doesn't have a cost, than it would be free... but I don't have a copy of the game in front of me to be able to give you specific examples. A champion are acquired like other cards.
You said when a guard would be killed he is removed from game or he just goes to your discard pile?
When a guard is stunned, he is just sent to your discard pile (so you can draw it again).
why wouldn't you gain 11 health? you have 2 cards with symbols matching other cards. is it only when matching symbols are played after the initial card played?
Happy to try to help, but I shot this in 2017 so I'd need a time stamp to know what section of the video you are referring to.
@@WatchItPlayed very first 2 cards you play right before the first champion
@@spookytkid Please provide the time (minutes and seconds). I get a lot of comments to respond to all the time. I am not able to go hunting through the video to find the spot you are trying to ask about. You tell me the spot. I'll go to it, and try to help you out. Cheers.
@@WatchItPlayed ua-cam.com/video/aDdmA_zLeBY/v-deo.html
@@spookytkid Ah yes, I see what you're saying. In this case I'm just specifically talking about the card on the left, so I only mention the 6 health it is adding. As you notice though, in a game, if both cards were played, you'd get the benefits of the card on the right as well. Let me put it another way: "As soon as you have two or more
cards of the same faction in play, you may trigger all relevant Ally Abilities. They may be used at any time during your Main Phase, and each may only be used once per turn."
What will happen to the deck of the player eliminated, where does it go? (for the not special character deck)
Do you mean if there are more than two players? You just set it aside. That player's stuff is no longer considered in play.
enjoyed the game, a fantastical version of star realms which is very nice
Glad you had fun with it!
Love your Videos. Are you going to do one about the Arkham Horror LCG? (story focused coop Living Card Game with lovecraft theme)
We'll see. I avoid pre-announcing games in case something changes in my schedule.
Very helpful guide that helped me very much👍👍👍
Great to hear Willi - thanks for the kind comment!
We always thought that when you use the sacrifice ability, it means you can’t use any of the other abilities on the card.
Am I wrong?
Awesome. Thanks for the info. :D
You can use both abilities.
Watch It Played thank you. Cheers
What happen if i don’t spend all of the money in my turn will it goes to the discard pile?
Correct.
Another really good informative video Rodney. I've been keeping my eye on this deckbuilding game
Thanks Richard - glad you found it helpful! We'll have a play through video online shortly as well.
I’m so confuse with the expend action. Could someone explain how it work ?
To use an expend ability, turn the card sideways to gain the effect listed after the expend symbol. You may do this at any point during the Main Phase. You'll see more details at 11:47 in the video. Hope that helps!
Great video, Rodney!!!!
Thanks!!!
You're very welcome Kipel
This is a really cool game
I love this game and I play Star Realms quite often also. I have a nagging question though.. When a card tells you to "draw a card" this means you draw from your own deck, NOT the market deck. Have I been playing correctly?
Steve Pruneau correct
You've got it!
There is no link to the White Wizard website in the description. Just saying.
Thanks - fixed!
Great video
Thanks Raul!

So the rules are very close to being identical to Star Realms? The basic cards look essentially like a reskin of Star Realms as well.
There are some similarities, to be sure.
Do you prefer this game or Dominion?

These videos are *excellent* but that's a lottttt of producers. Really like a 100 people were involved in this?
Back then I ran fundraisers to financially support the show (I work on the show full time). If you donated at a certain level you'd get producer credits. So yep, all of those people were quite literally producing the show.
