  • Being trapped deep under the ocean's surface is something every military submariner must consider and prepare for.
The Royal Navy has always been at the forefront of underwater warfare, so its submariners must be ready for any situation.
Forces News has spoken to a former Royal Navy Commander about exactly how submariners are rescued if a problem occurs.

I served in SSBNs for 20 years and did 2 wet runs from 30m. That career set me up for life in more ways than I could have imagined.

The NATO organization mentioned is called International Submarine Escape and Rescue Liaison Office (ISERLO) and has working relationships with the Russian Federation and the People's Republic of China. This relationship is based on premises set forth by the United Nations Convention on the Law of Sea. Nevertheless, the endangered nation does have the right to refuse assistance.
