Dress shirts and casual button-ups - at first glance, they might look the same but there are a few major differences between the two.
Why does it matter? Well, wearing a dress shirt when you should be wearing a casual button-up (or vice versa) can ruin your outfit, and it’s a mistake I see guys making all the time, especially at weddings and out at the bar or club.
So, to make sure you don’t make that mistake, I’m going to cover 7 differences between dress shirts and casual button-ups, including the details, the fabric and colors, and the fit.
We’ll also look at some examples of quintessential button ups to see which ones are dressy and which ones are casual. By the end of this video, you’ll know which type of button up shirt to wear in order to look and feel confident.

The Bird has a bad rep.
Two and a half minutes of advertisements before the actual content even starts. I'm not blaming the author but something's not right given the fact that UA-cam itself pushes ads down people's throats. I bet the creators don't see a single penny.
Excellent video it reminded me of a few things I had forgotten.
I appreciate the upload frequency. Thank you, Brock
More to come!
Wow, just found your channel. I love it already.
Agree that very formal shirts generally look incoherent with casual outfits, though mostly wear “casual” dress shirts (in linen/ cotton/linen mix) and I’ll occasionally wear when with shorts or even jeans. It really all depends on how big of a gap there is between the different pieces of clothing that you are using in your outfit.
Great video 🔥 learned a lot of new things
I’ve been tailoring a all of my casual shirts ever since I started watching your videos. Thank you for the tips 🙏🙏
Glad to hear it!
Oh man... My largest style mistake starting out ☠️
Where was this video when I was in high school lol
Same dude….same.
I think button down and pointed collars can serve as both casual and formal regardless of being "stiff" as long as it looks good. There's no strict rule. I personally think point collars look nicer with a tie than those cutaways do. You surely don't want to casually wear a designated dress shirt with a cutaway collar, but you can certainly wear a suitable shirt for both casual and formal settings. It's actually very subjective, so your nonobjective statement saying it's a mistake is quite false, sir.
Just signed up for Scentbird with your link! The Bentley Silverlake fragrance was one of my matches and I'm excited to try it too ☺ and thank you for giving styling advice as someone who wears smaller sizes. I'm also a thinner guy and I think it's harder for us to find the right fit for everything
You're the only channel that gets straight to the point in every video.
GREAT topic
I wish I found your channel years ago. Informative and concise, packed with information, to the point, reasonable length
I appreciate that!
Casual shirts can be tucked in with shirt stays and IMO they generally look better than dress shirts. Dress shirts just looks too "glossy" to me. I prefer the matte finish and thicker fabric. It looks cleaner. So I usually wear my casual shirts dressier.
That was helpful. Thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
"out in the wild" love that term 😂
Thank you!
Hi, really you are doing great and helpful job. thank you.
Thank you!
The distinction is really much simpler than this. A casual shirt will be sized something like "large" and a dress shirt will be sized something like "16 34/35." A dress shirt will have an exact collar length. The best dress shirts also have an exact sleeve length. All short sleeve shirts are casual.
Disagree. Maybe that was once true, but too many retailers are selling to both markets and bringing their market's most common sizing with them. So Target and Kohls will sell lines of dress shirts with alpha sizing. And Spier and Mackay sells casual shirts with exact collar sizes. Likewise, Indochino and other MTM companies are selling casual shirts with custom measurements.
Things are changing. Check places like state and liberty. Dress shirts with alpha sizing
Great video Brock. Any brand recommendations for casual shirts?
More about short sleeves, button-up shirts and pairing them with chinos, jeans and shorts including color and style, please. Thanks. ❤
Nice video 👍
Thank you
Can you do a video of the difference between a sports jacket and a suit jacket please?
Good idea!

I really like that shirt you are wearing....the color and fit seems great....what is that color? brand?
Great video,I have a question, what type of shirt is the best to wear with a blazer+jeans+loafers look?,would that be a dress shirts or casual shirt?if it’s a casual shirt then how will it stay tucked in if it’s meant to be shorter in length?
This ten minute video felt 3 minutes long... Wow. I think that's good because that means you were very engaging!
Get ready Brock is testing us lol!
There will be a quiz 👵🏻
I go for the “Invisible Tie” look a lot. Nothing wrong or out of place. II actually don’t like to see open necked dress shirts. In a similar way I do not think that there is anything out of place to wear a long dress shirt untucked. In the UK this style is sported a lot especially by younger guys. Also the Invisible Tie.
nice timing lol
Hot take: I wear OCBD as my primary shirt, even to interviews. So long as the sheen matches, you won’t look too out of place. This is especially true if the collar has a lovely roll.
What is OCBD?
Oxford cloth button down@@danlightened
@@lc-g6363 Ah! Thanks.
Can’t see a link in the description about shirt fits mentioned at 7:12
Hot take: I’m a public accountant and I wear my dress shirts untucked at work sometimes. French cuffs too. I don’t wear accessories outside of the links when I wear it untucked. I’m still the most dressed up person in the office usually. First time I did it people were surprised, but never said anything negative.
Also I’m 26, I’ve been to only 3 weddings and 1 funeral in my entire life. How often are people going to these things? I avoid funerals because I don’t like them. I just don’t know anyone getting married I guess.
The older you get the more funerals you'll go to. It's a sad truth of life. Also, nobody really likes funerals but going helps your relationships with those left behind. I'd recommend going whenever the families are close to you or the relationships are important to you.
Good for you wearing your dress shirts untucked. It’s not a violation of fashion rules. It’s very cool , trendy and sexy. With or without a tie and the top button fastened.
Hi Brock i have questions how you wear fully tucked shirt. Do you want this flat iron look or you pull out a little amount of shirt and fit it aroud your belt
What is the brand of shirt that you are wearing in the video? I used to have one in the exact color which I loved but it got too worn out and I had to get rid of it, and I haven't found anything like it since.
I recently bought an Oxford from Uniqlo, but the hem length is in the middle between dress and casual shirt, but it kinda look bad on me because if hem length. Is it possible to cut the lenght in a tailor shop?
Yup you can get it shortened. Just be careful: if you take off more than an inch or so, it'll put the bottom button too close to the hem.
Man I want to know what youre wearing in the video lol. Very classy
Thanks for the video. So do you leave the color stays in the dress shirt?
Yeah, I leave them in. Just take them out if you wash your shirts or drop them off at the cleaners.

Hello sir, been a fan of your for years now - amazing content!
I require some guidance now with getting a wedding suit. I would like to know if you can recommend some that I can also wear it besides that wedding? Some suits that are versatile and functional.
Thanks in advance, a fan from Romania
I bought so many "casual" button downs (mostly from the Gap -- I had rewards) but it took me too long to realize they were... too long. Then I started buying their Untucked shirts, which are still too long lol. Need to find some good actual untucked brands.
Quick fix on the sewing machine. Too short is harder to fix!
What pants are those in 6:20?
What if you are in a study course like medicine that you have to wear corporate clothes through out. What do I do
So can I tailor a dress shirt into a casual one
For a casual shirt....the "it should be at mid crotch..." for some guys, yes, but when you are on the athletic side....and buying off the rack...it doesn't work that way...so, a tailor is part of the equation, almost all the time
You guys keep talking about hem length but when I do try either dress or casual button ups, they're all too long for my body. Lol.
Hi Brock, what do you think about "grandad" collarless shirts in general?
I’m not a huge fan of the collarless look, but that’s just personal preference.
@@BrockMcGoff I'd be interested in your reasons why. If "collarless" stretches from casual linen, to some truly formal Shanghai Tang what I would have called Nehru collar, they can be something different and useful. In my very amateur and innocent opinion.
I can’t find a casual shirt that matches any descriptions 😢
How about wearing a tie to go with a casual long sleeved shirt? I it any good?
Rule of thumb is don't wear a tie without a jacket.
What is the ideal length for casual shirt?
It should stop around mid fly.
Shawn White ????
You pronounce "hybrid" like "hyper". So every time I hear "hyper length" or "hyper shirt".
I don’t agree that a dress shirt should never be worn untucked. I wear them like that all the time with and without a tie. I love to see other guys wearing their shirts and ties like that. It looks cool and trendy and quite sexy. Also I always fasten the top button on my shirt even without a tie.
First off, I completely disagree with having an untucked dress shirt in conjunction with a tie-- I think that would negate the intention of looking professional altogether.
On the other hand, I completely agree with having all shirt buttons fastened on any shirt, be it dress or casual. I have worn them like this all my life, and have been under the assumption that the buttons are there for a reason, despite what criticism I may get. I feel strange wearing a button-up shirt without a fastened collar, and obtain pleasure from having a snug collar around my neck-- I probably have a fetish, but I am treated with respect by others as a result of making an attempt to at least put effort into dressing in something other than a t-shirt or pajamas. To date, no one I have run across has brought up the fact that my collar is buttoned with the absence of a tie. Within the last few years, I have adopted bolo ties to complement my casual look, and actually prefer them to the "invisible tie" look for the most part, however depending on the type of shirt I am wearing.
Hey what’s wrong with having a fetish?
@@davidcraggs3770well, um... nothing really I suppose! I think it just all depends on what said fetish entails. 😊
One man's casual is another man's formal. Think Arkansas farmer vs. LA CGI artist...
Polo is the only shirt to wear untucked. The untucked button down looks very slovenly.
I disagree. If it’s the right length/style/hem shape I think it looks awesome. For example - instagram.com/p/CRPJQgTLgka/? and instagram.com/p/BsvfU5oHWzh/?
if it has a tail, it needs tucked, if not, not.
I also disagree, I wear my button downs untucked a lot and I don’t think I look slovenly one bit.
@@kramnalla Again, shirt tails are a fashion statement which many guys of all ages sport. It is not a violation of fashion rules or a punishable offence to leave your shirt untucked.
What I call slovenly is wide open necked dress shirts especially with a suit. I hate the style and would never been seen dead sporting that style.
Why don't they teach this stuff in school? Great video
Hello Brock, I love your opinions on wearing dress shirts. It seems that “Fashion Rules of Thumb” in the USA differ slightly to what is sported amongst younger guys in the UK.
This concerns the wearing of dress shirts on casual occasions and along with jeans etc. untucked and fully buttoned without a tie.
You seem to be inferring that it is a fashion violation or sin to dress in that style.
You would probably condemn my appearance if you saw me.
I like to feel good, cool and trendy and I find the full buttoned and untucked style so attractive and even sexy.
Perhaps it would be a good subject to feature and video because I don’t think I can be the only person to have this opinion and practice it.
Come over to the UK and walk the streets, bars and look on line at some of the fashion outlets where you will notice many male models wearing dress shirts untucked and fully buttoned to the collar without a tie.
Hey David! Do you mean button up shirts, in general, or actual dress shirts?
@@BrockMcGoffDress Shirts
@@davidcraggs3770 interesting! To me, that's like wearing your shoes with the laces untied. I get the sort of "anti fit" message, which can be cool in a way. But I'd personally just feel sloppy wearing an actual dress shirt untucked in a casual way.

Can you wear a button down shirt with a double breasted jacket "blazer"?
Of course. When he says something like this is a mistake, that's just his opinion. You can wear a button down shirt with a suit and tie. 👔
I find that my best dress shirts are very long. Some cover my butt completely, but fit me well everywhere else. This way, it’s impossible to mistakenly wear them untucked, because they would look like dresses. And the length helps the stay tucked in all day too.
I wear my dress shirts untucked all the time and I don’t look like I am wearing a dress at all. Quite trendy and sexy
I’m not adept at “advanced looks.” Ha
