One Day at a Time is an American sitcom television series that aired on the CBS network from December 16, 1975, until May 28, 1984. It starred Bonnie Franklin as a divorced mother raising two teenage daughters, played by Mackenzie Phillips and Valerie Bertinelli, in Indianapolis. It also starred Pat Harrington, Jr.
The series was created by Whitney Blake and Allan Manings, a husband-and-wife writing duo who were both actors in the 1950s and 1960s. The series was based on Whitney Blake's own life as a single mother, raising her child, future actress Meredith Baxter. Like many sitcoms developed by Lear, One Day at a Time often tackled serious issues in life and relationships, particularly those related to second wave feminism.
Stories depicting such events as weddings, births, and other important milestones frequently stretched over two-, three-, and four-part episodes. Ann Romano, a divorced mother, moves to Marion County, west-side Indianapolis, with her daughters, the rebellious Julie and the wisecracking Barbara. Ann frequently struggles with maintaining her role as mother while affording her daughters the freedom she never had as a young woman.
Complicating matters is David Kane, a younger man who lives in the building and takes a romantic interest in Ann. Dwayne Schneider, the building's quirky superintendent (most often referred to only by his last name), provides usually-unwanted advice to the tenants.
Back in the day these opening tv theme songs and credits were almost as important and entertaining as the show itself.. Great video
I know what you mean. I hear these songs on Oldies stations and I feel young again.
Yeah I use to love the way they would freeze people when jumping, especially at the ends!!!
Damn sure Was....
For real! I miss it!
These theme songs are 100x better than the garbage they call music now
It 's hard to believe it's 45 years that One Day At a Time debuted. What'e evening more amazing is that Valerie Bertinelli is pushing 60 years old and still fine as ever.
Stop it
She has aged very well.
That Mackenzie Phillips is like batsh*t crazy. Telling the most sick stories about her drug use and sexual life. Yikes
Yes, but Phillips got her life together and is working with drug addicted youths. I applaud her for that.
she aged well, but looked young from the start- she's 15 here, but looks like she's 10!
This theme song makes me feel so sad. Maybe because it reminds me of a time that is forgotten And that cannot be relived again.
Orlando Cruz Tomorrow will always be better than today.
I'm not sure how old you are Orlando but I will 40 in days. I was only a kid when this show was on TV. Although I did kind of grow up in the 80s (ages 2-10), I spent most of my growing up in the 90s and now I am spending my adult life in the 21st. I would give anything... ANYTHING to be able to have spent my teenage years and some of my adult years in the 80s. When I look back on that time I can remember wanting to be an adult so bad and now that I am older I wish I was an adult during that time more so then I did back then. Everything was better back then... Things were more personal and there wasn't Social Media. I might be on UA-cam now but I could most definitely live without it and every other thing that comes with the internet. Man I wish I coulda' had a nice little apt. in the city back in lets say... 1985... Yea... 1985!
I agree Mr Cruz. Times were so much simplier.
william worth. I graduated high school in 75 and it was a wonderful time to be growing up. Cable TV still barely existing, no cell phones, internet, etc. We actually talked to each other. We used to ride around getting stoned listening to 8 tracks. Wonderful time!
it's just that we're old now, nostalgia for the time that can never be. ..aww look at little Valerie. ...nice tune
I was a little kid when this was on TV. Now that I'm older, I notice just how well written this little song is.
Yep, and I remember we used to believe life will always be like this, back then.
This song is one of the earliest memories I have. Every time I hear it it takes me back to 1983 and a simpler better time.
Me too, as I was 9 in 1983 as this show was in its last couple of seasons.
Its amazing just how CRAZY GOOD the TV theme songs from that era are... Especially the bass grooves in those songs. For instance... Sanford and Son, Threes Company, Taxi, WKRP in Cincinnati, Lavern and Shirley, The Great American Hero, Hill Street Blues, the list goes on! I'm 40 and I can clearly remember watching TV with my parents and singing along to those catchy tunes when I was a kid. Now that I'm older I have become a huge fan of super "bassy" car stereo systems. I have a thumb drive with dozens of late 70s and early 80s TV theme songs. All of which I will play in my car with the stereo turned up and the bass cranking whenever I have had a hard day at work and I am needing to relax and smile. One Day at a Time and The Lavern and Shirley theme song are 2 of my favorites. When they are turned up, the bass lines becomes really distinct and super funky! Even The Golden Girls has a crazy good bass groove. Honestly though, my favorite is Sanford and Son! The looks on the peoples faces I get when they hear me playing these theme songs is priceless. Rather than give me a dirty look (like they do when I am playing my hard rock or rap) I get a bunch of giggles, smiles and thumbs up signs... Especially from the older folks who really recognize what I am playing. Its even better than when I am playing Deck the Halls or Rudolph the Red-nosed reindeer during Christmas.
Oh you like bass grooves and 70's sitcom theme songs. Shiiiii.....ua-cam.com/video/roHYXrLhmHc/v-deo.html
In Sanford and Son, I liked the hi hat accent at the end.
Look up the theme for "Fish" .
Yeah, William Worth, you gotta LOVE QUINCY JONES!!!!
79 Grammy nominations and 27 wins!
And his FRIEND LIST?? OMG! Sanford and Son, among others , are his.
So true
My wife and I met Valerie Bertinelli at her book signing for “Indulge”. It was a pleasure to meet her and she was very nice to us! 👍
We got an autograph and a couple of pictures with her! ❤
RIP Bonnie Franklin,and Pat Harrington
the 1st girl you see rip from new years eve 41 to age 71
Also Nanette Fabray, who played Miss Franklin's mother.
@@rudyiraheta80 Who are you talking about?
The two characters that are still watchable today, I think. Harrington was particularly great. The show fell apart when they tried it without him. He also wrote at least one episode.
And manatee fabray
After all these years I finally looked it up. They aren't saying "OH-WUP-OH-WEE," they're saying "so up on your feet." Personal mystery solved.
😂😂😂👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻so funny &cute
I always thought it was "whomp on the beat".
@@codykimmel Ha!
Oh whop on the geese
I thought it was "so walk on your feet". Misheard lyrics are so fun! lol
One of my favorite theme songs. Great tune, witty lyrics. Mackenzie Phillips looks cute nodding her head. Shame she had so much trouble. RIP Bonnie and Pat!
God this takes me back. I had forgotten all about this show, and now the memories come flooding back. I miss the 70's.
From the good ole days when they made great theme songs.
and great tv programs
For some reason I recalled this song the other day and decided to look it up and hear it after ions of years, little did I know that it would open the floodgates and turn me into a blubbering nostalgic mess!! Memories of an incredibly beautiful childhood and the most beautiful mother in the world overcame the rest of my day. But now I can’t listen to this in public anymore that’s for sure….
" eons "
I am watching the Norman Lear special and saw Makenzie and Valerie. This is my fav tv theme song of all time!
Always loved that little section”so up on your feet” the handclaps come in. Too funky.
This is when all the sitcom theme songs delivered a huge message!Think about it!The facts of life!Gimme a break!Different Strokes and more...Those less than 2 minute songs delivered so much standards! You take the good, you take the bad you take the bad!You take them both and there you have THE FACTS OF LIFE!
GIMME A BREAK..Now I know what it takes...I'm putting a new face on the old one!Ready for anything!Clinging with faith! Not a moment to late!Showing the whole world THAT NOTHING CAN GET ME DOWN!OOOOOOOOOOOH!
Different Strokes...IT TAKES DIFFERENT STROKES TO RULE THE WORLD!!!Big messages were in our TV shows back then and I miss it!!!
This theme song delivered as well!Love it! YOU JUST TAKE IT LIKE IT COMES!ONE DAY AT A TIME!
oh man hearing this song always puts a smile on my face!
Love the old theme songs from the past much better than today's
Me too
Takes me back , like it was Yesterday, Me and my twin never missed a Show, Don't produce sitcoms like they used to, Miss Them 😢
I loved this show and remember being so young meeting bonnie franklin who was ever so nice and had such class. I wish there were more shows like this nowadays.
I watched this show as a kid in the late 70's on channel 44 KBHK in the Bay Area. Now I'm 52yrs old now.Hearing this theme song made me feel like a kid again.
This song just came to mind today. I was at a point in my life, when that lyric made sense. 'This Is It', because it is! I'm older now, and it's like I've been waiting for it to be 'it' someday. But I realized that that moment is 'it'. It can be anything I want it to be (I choose). No future, or looking for somebody to decide. I just make it the best that I can. My life is going by me.... That moment is now gone. I was worrying about unimportant things.
I just got into this show, lol Im 41. My late Mother watched it. I think the theme song has a very good message.
This theme goes so hard!! That “So up on your feet!” Gets me going.
The 70's ,a iconic era, this show was my jam, theme song is truly special
No other era comes close to the 1970s. What a joy to live through it.Thanks GOD!!
I miss this era of Television . I'm watching this now on antenna tv.
This is when TV was great!! Songs, writing, acting...you don't see that anymore!!
There’s still good TV out there. It’s hard to find.
@@ChristianFrates1997 So hard that I dont watch it anymore
🎶
This is it, This is it
This is life, The one you get
So go and have a ball
This is it, This is it
Straight ahead, And rest assured
You can't be sure at all
So while you're here
Enjoy the view
Keep on doing what you do
Hold on tight, we'll muddle through
One day at a time, One day at a time
So up on your feet, up on your feet
Somewhere theres music playing
Don't you worry none
Just take it like it comes
One day at a time, One day at a time
One day at a time, One day at a time
One day at a time, One day at a time
One day at a time 🎶
Words to live by👌🏻
Very true.
I never realized what a great show it was till I was an adult.
It's hard not to become the slight bit emotional or nostalgic when listening to this theme song and looking at this intro!
And then, to realize that the little girl with the basketball, married Eddie Van Halen, has a son Wolfie that rocks too, and had a pretty good acting career for herself! I love Valerie Bertinelli!
Trying to lose weight and get healthy and this mantra, this song from one of my favorite shows of my childhood came to mind. “One day at a time”. 😊
Rest in Peace Bonnie Franklin and Pat Harrington. Both Lengeds.
Does anyone else get sad thinking about all of the old shows, and the past days that they may represent for you? I do, because I miss a bunch of people who are dead, (family, friends, enemies), and it makes me think that it sucks that we all have to die at some point. It sucks, sucks, sucks! It sucks! Life is good, even if not everything is going well, and that's my point I guess. I don't want to leave yet.
I still watch this on the weekends. The show airs on Antenna TV. I love the Theme song!
I love the back up voices in the background, such an up beat song. I want this to be my ringtone for my alarm clock haha
I was a wee baby back then but I vaguely remember this show! I remember the theme song pretty good lol
This theme song was a song I ALWAYS looked forward to hearing in my early teens, right after school- every day!
"R.I.P. bonnie-franklin & pat-harrington jr. you'll be missed by everyone always & forever amen"🙏🇺🇸🙏🇮🇪🇺🇸.
The theme song really should have been expanded and made into a single. It would have been a hit.
It would have been nice if they could have incorporated the end credits music into it, too
Exactly. It would’ve been like the Friends (both a hit single and popular opening) theme song of the ‘70s.
This was one of the most popular sitcoms when I was in kindergarten...
bring back so much MEMORIES
If you are an American who grew up in America in the 70s this must resonate with you
I wish i could go back to those day's of my youth
Just you stand by, sugar.
That's all I, a Hollywood producer born in 1968, am gonna say ;)
Damn how old is you
Go to Netflix.
This show premiered the year before I was born. Can't believe I'm going to be 45. 🥴🤯
To me this has to be the best television theme of all time.💯👍❤
It was entertaining TV, but it was also nudging us into ideas that would eventually be common today. This one helped bring in single motherhood. The show Alice did the same. Three's Company got us considering homosexuality in a non-threatening manner, and Angie brought in the idea of privilege. Before all of this, All In The Family preemptively introduced that objection to any of this was bigotry and was to be frowned upon. I can't say this was planned, but certainly seems interesting to consider. TV in the 70s and 80s was certainly different than Leave it to Beaver in the 50s.
Offhand I can't think of a better one.
One of the BEST themes
It's like everything Norman Lear ever touched was gold. I miss the good old days so much. 😪
Outstanding Cast!!
I have honestly never seen One Day At A Time! I guess I may have been too young to understand it, because I was born in 1979.
I started to watch this intro every day, just like I used to about 40 yrs ago, one day at a time!
RIP Norman Lear. We will not have genius like this again
Watching this is such a good pick me up . And it's true in many ways . Don't worry so much about the future or brood over the past . Just enjoy the present time.
I wasn't even born when this show debuted I love it though I love the message it sends back in that day a single mother with kids wasn't accepted and nowadays things are changing so fast that we can't live one day at a time but in my mind I always live one day at a time because it's not always up to me it's up to my Father in heaven
Nine years?! wow, what a self-life for such a simple concept. It was always on when I was growing up and the song has been etched into my memory banks.
I watched this show in the 1980's and like the theme song too.
I watched almost every episode- love the intro!
That was a great show. I remember Bonnie Franklin was at my workplace a long time ago. Back in the early 1990's. It was to hear about her passing away. She and the whole cast were great.
Okay, so, I'm not the word police, but you wrote that Bonnie Franklin was at your workplace, and that "It was to hear about her passing away". Why did she go to your workplace to hear about herself passing away? Was she a zombie or a ghost or something? Spooky stuff, with ol' Bonnie Franklin going on!
@@hugejohnson5011 I was saying that long before her death she made an appearance at where I work in my hometown, if that sounds better. I wasn't that when she passed away, they took her there. It was long before her death.
@@snake9911 Thank you for clarifying that. I was a bit scared at first. All is well! Cheers!
@@hugejohnson5011 I see what I said wrong. I meant to say that it was sad that she passed away. Sometimes you get in a hurry when you are typing something and you don't realize that you miss printed something. Thanks 👍.
Damn, I wish I could watch this show again.
This intro always picks me up . I loved this show as a kid too . My mother was going through the same as their mother .
When my father came home from work, when this show came out, he’d say ‘JulieBarrrrbra!!’and my sister and I would run to greet him! Our names weren’t Julie or Barbara, but we watched the show together every week and we knew what he meant😊
That is a sweet memory to have! You are lucky!
This one is so easily overshadowed by all the great theme songs of it's era...and I know it's only 8 bars long but that key change into bridge is glorious; that could've been it's own theme song!
One Day at a Time was a GREAT TV show !!! ❤🧡💛💚💙💜
My favorite theme song of all time.... This is it....
Ah memories. As a kid they only things i liked about this show were the theme song and Schnider
Tony F me too 😊
Tony F cigs in his T-shirt 😏
I think all kids liked Schneider.
Merry Christmas too All of You and MAY GOD Bless you All.
Living in the future of 2021 and playing this theme song when I was a kid in the late 70's to early 80's makes me appreciate those good times. This generation of entertainment is weird now.
I was a teenager with a tape recorder taping this tune to hear anytime I wanted to. Lol.
Teens now a days won't even know what a tape recorder is. .. lol
Yick
LOVE lOVE LOVED this show growing up!!!!!! Thanks for posting this-MWAH
this is still my favorite of the tv theme songs! this is an amazing song!!! the arrangement! there is so much joy in it! the backing vocals!! the claps! the harmonies! the "so up on your feet" moment when it all comes together! I am almost embarrassed by how much I love this song--but you know what?-I am NOT embarrassed-because it is a great song! and they are killing it in this recording! it takes me back, slaps me, then kisses me, hugs me, then throws me back up in the air again! love it!
I Remember Mackenzie Phillips And Valerie Bertinelli Both My Favorite Celebrities!
I always thought it was "so womp on your feet"
For years I thought it was "whup on a beat"
I thought it was, "So womp on da dee" Whatever the hell that means. I'm glad to see that I wasn't the only one who was confused.
Nope. It's "up on your feet". 😁
These comments are funny!!! :)
I thought is was "so hop on the free".
Obviously the main theme is a banger (certainly in the conversation for best tv themes of all time) but I love the instrumental closing theme with that pounding beat & the sax. That’s some good stuff!
God Bless you and Merry Christmas too All of You.
we all have to shuffle off this mortal coil, glad I lived in simple times god bless
Wow 😯 totally forgot of this 📺 nostalgia
70s sitcoms were the best.
They're the only ones I like.
What a great, uplifting theme song.
I'm glad I'm not alone on this...missing the good old days.
Time to go finish watching the "Recruit"(al Pacino)
A show was good when it made you happy, sad, laugh and tear up multiple times in 25 minutes or less
One of the catchiest opening tunes ever...
This song is bomb ass. It reminds me of Sly and the Family Stone. It has so much life & spirit.
RIP Norman Lear 1922 - 2023
They had some great tv show
Man,I miss my childhood.
I get sentimental, makes me think of my mom and family growing up in Queens NYC when life for a kid was playing outside and riding a bike. Walking to school
I'm moving on up Song and especially this one is Positive LIGHT.
I rested my finger on the play bar and saw "most replayed" is also my favorite part.
I can't believe that 1975, the year this show was created, is nearly 50 years ago. I was born in 1976 and I'm trying to absorb the fact that I am quickly inching toward 50 myself. 🥴🥴🤯
The description is NOT accurate, each season of One Day at a Time had it's own opening intro. This is the intro from season 1.
i love this show
I love how upbeat the theme gets @ 0:27
Love this song!!!!
I always watched that show as a kid and I thought Schneider had a block of wood wrapped up in his shirt.
I wonder why this theme wasn't released in the Top-40?
The theme to The Rockford Files, S.W.A.T., Happy Days, Laverne & Shirley were Top-40 contenders. 😁Not to mention the theme to Makin' It. Which lasted on the charts longer than the actual series.
Check out the theme to " Angie" by Maureen McGovern , beautiful
A few weeks before my mother’s passing I wrote these lyrics of ‘ one day at a Time’’ & taped it onto her wall. Somehow it actually helped her cope with end of Life.
As most people would say - why doesn’t the TV industry make good shows like these anymore?
And this TV theme is catchy and memorable!
they do make them, there is literally a high quality modern reboot of this exact show
Because they can't make anything that doesn't have an agenda. And everything is a reboot of a reimagining of a remake.
@@Spelaea the reboot is awful
They make better shows than this these days, which include quality acting (instead of the corny, unreaslistic acting common in old timey sitcoms) and less predictable themes and plots.
@@UnwantedStudios3 One would think Norman Lear wouldn't venture into doing reboots.
Omg brought me back memories
When I was in treatment they made us sing this song.
As sappy as it sounds the words are very true.
Back when TV was free. Lol.
If by 'free', you mean 10 minutes of opening/closing credits, 11 minutes of commercials, and 9 minutes of a sub par show ☺️
My whole family would sing this song 🎵 when it came on 🤔 we where HAPPY and together know its just me and my sisters 🙏
I was nine years old when this came out, and had a crush on Bonnie Franklin, and Valerie Bertinelli!
I love this song!
It's my favorite opening theme song.
I've always wondered what the show would of been like if the original idea happened. Whitney Blake had created it for her and her daughter, ( Meredith Baxter, the mom on family ties) to show her struggles of being a single mother. By the time a network picked it up, both Whitney and Meredith were to old to play the two parts. Apparently Whitney had always felt cheated by it.
