Watching this movie as an adult just makes me sad. I specifically remember the scene where she folds the picture of her and Edward in half and tapes it in the scrapbook so that she can't see herself. She has such a deeply unhealthy lack of self-worth. Throughout the series, she continues to think she isn't good enough for Edward and doesn't understand why he loves her.

Yes! I actually deleted a whole section on self-worth from this video because it was running long, but I touch on it in the Twilight video. Edward also doesn’t feel worthy of her which is why they cling so desperately to one another.

It breaks my heart to read New Moon because Jacob was a wonderful guy who truly cared about her. Not because she was “mysterious” and he couldn’t read her mind. If the Cullens never showed up in Forks they would’ve fell in love and had a beautiful life together. I truly believe Edward robbed her of that.

I second that. Her relationship actually built up organically, instead of an instant “he’s so hot and mysterious/ can’t read her mind and smells nice”. Back then before Stephanie decided Jacob is getting too popular for her liking, he was really sweet. I wish there was an alternative universe series of sort exploring what would have happened if Bella never met Edward. Because let’s be honest their dynamic, the whole story around Emely, Sam and Leah is quite interesting, Jacob not being able to tell her what was really up could be an compelling conflict. But it could also end in yet another A/B/O romantasy story rotting on the shelves.

It felt like Stephanie applied the “wise Indian” stereotype to Jacob. She made him faultless and all knowing, wise beyond his years. Somebody said it’s as is she accidentally made him a viable love interest for Bella, and had to drastically change that to make the readers team Edward again in eclipse.he deserved so much better than Bella, he deserved someone who cared about him. It’s like his sole purpose in the book was to keep Bella from killing herself, and we didn’t even get to learn a lot about him

If I remember the book correctly, she didn't hope he would come back which is even scarier- she just killed herself inside after their separation and lived only for the memory of him as a reminder of time when she still felt alive. But that's actually the dangerous thing about the situation. She didn't think of moving on, she didn't even want to, in fact, she refused to move on, because she believed that the love for Edward is the essence of her existence, but that's not love, that's in fact the obsession and lack of self-esteem. At this point, choosing Jacob actually feels like the right choice- choosing life and will to live instead of this dead state. Or, which is even more important, in other book she should've leave them both. They both tried to manipulate her and control her and if she chose herself instead of them, the series would actually end with a valuable lesson for young readers- to be strong enough to stay alone rather than be with someone with whom you are not free.

I truly wish she gave Leah a better plot point, in Eclipse she introduced her and in Breaking Dawn we see why she’s so upset, not only does she have to be around her ex who is with her cousin now, but she has to share thoughts with teenage boys and her body stopoed growing, so she no longer feels like a woman.
I love my little fan story about exploring Jacob and Leah being together. I mean, if imorinting has something to do with your genes picking the ultimate partner, then Leah would be the best choice. Once she stops phasing she starts aging again. What better genes would their be than being with another shape shifter.

My views on Edward changed so much after I read Midnight Sun. The inside of his head was so, so anxious - the fast pace, the back and forth, the suffocating control, constant rumination, the hypervigilance. I had to re-read all the books after that. Granted, I don't believe it excuses his behavior toward Bella, ESPECIALLY with how controlling he got in Eclipse, but I guess it just helped me understand him a bit more. Like insulting their intelligence, calling them children and muts, insinuating that they were beneath them. In my opinion, all the vamps carried themselves with a superiority. They definitely thought themselves above human beings, but the disdain for the wolves was pointed and personal. Ironic because in their stance as a superior being, they couldn't seem to be objective about how brilliant the Quilettes were. I think we saw that change in Breaking Dawn when Edward could tell how intricate their mind system was. Even then, it was very cerebral, not on the basis of them deserving respect and decency or being ridiculously intelligent.

I hopped on the twilight train late. I was already in college (19 or 20) and already engaged in therapy when my coworkers dropped these books on my desk.
I was team Jacob and then team nobody because Jacob may have been a better fit for Bella but Bella was absolutely a terrible fit for Jacob.
Outside of the fact that those vamps derailed his life, he was pouring into her knowing that she would/could never reciprocate. He was willing to accept the absolute minimum from her and I just kept imagining what that would look like for him 5 years down the road if Edward never came back. Maybe I would feel differently if he was an adult opening up to an adult being patient with her and holding space for her to process and heal from her trauma but I just kept coming back to she’s using this kid and knows she’s using this kid and the kid knows he’s being used but he’s happy with it.
I just thought Jacob deserved better than to be a crutch and Bella deserved better than a controlling century year old boyfriend. Edward just deserved prison (I still can’t get over him explaining how he decided to be a vigilante when he went off his diet and Bella being chill like girl that man is a m*rderer.)
Looking forward to your next videos because the way the book tackled the Renesme Jacob situation was the biggest ‘im sorry what😮?’ moment of the series.

Eclipse is the worst of the books by far, the core three characters are all absolutely unbearable in that one.
I think what I dislike the most about the books however is what a martyr Bella is in her own mind. She views everything that happens to her and everyone else's behavior as somehow being her fault to the point that she can't actually be held accountable to anything, because she'll just spiral into self-loathing until she has to be comforted lest she becomes suicidal.
The narrative appears to want to frame this behavior as noble, when it's actually so destructive and completely unfair to the people around her. Not only can she not be held accountable, but she also strips others of any autonomy. If nothing can ever be your fault (because everything is hers) that also means nothing you do matters or has value.
Having been at the mercy of someone with the same worldview, it's really gross and upsetting to me that anyone would romanticize that.

He underestimated how quickly she could be convinced he lost interest in her. In his mind not caring for her is the last thing he can imagine, but to her it’s the first thing she thinks of. He went overboard and hurt her to prove it’s serious, and solidify that he has changed. Maybe leaving her in the woods was also a safety net for himself. Based on the books, I fully agree that Jacob is the better choice. He was more mature and it was a healthier love for Bella to have. He could protect her, much like Edward could (although Edward was the reason why she was always in danger anyway). It's always wild to me how many more people were Team Edward than Team Jacob. In the movies, she really shouldn't be with either but I still think that Jacob was a better choice in the movies than Edward (if I HAD to pick one). Everyone that I spoke to seemed so upset at the prospect that Jacob's anger could hurt Bella but no one seemed to notice that Edward literally knocked through a glass table to protect her from Jasper because he was too strong. Whenever there is a love triangle in a story, I basically always like the person that will not be chosen. And it took me literally over 20 years to realize that it's because I love healthy love and that's less exciting for people as a whole.

They weren’t on the Rez though. It was still Cullen territory. In the book when the pack did go out they already knew the Cullens had left therefore meaning they could phase or go over on that part of the treaty line. I genuinely think he wanted to hurt her so she would believe his words and not hold on to the idea of him coming back, he said himself humans forget. He expected her to move on. People move on or hold onto anger when someone hurts them and in his mind he didn’t think she would want him back. That idea kept him away as well.
If he wanted the wolves to take over or ensure her safety he wouldn’t have been so against them being around Bella. It wasn’t just Jacob he had an issue with- it was the entire pack. He didn’t trust any of them. Alice was shocked when she saw Jacob and stated how unstable they were. He probably wouldn’t have left if he knew they were still phasing and would be around Bella. He knew Jacob had the bloodline but I don’t think he expected them to phase cause the previous generation didn’t. He didn’t know them being there triggered it.

Seeing a lot of comments about Bella never really getting a chance to explore the relationship with Jacob romantically because of Stephanie and I agree. I also kinda think Stephanie is basically Bella. She’s obsessed with Edward. But objectively, I feel like the love triangle should’ve been even more intense with a greater question of who she would actually pick. Because what makes Edward different to everyone else for her is that he’s a vampire, he’s different. But Jacob is also a mythical creature and I just feel it would’ve been more interesting to see her fall really hard for that like she did with Edward and have to choose between them while actually being in love with both of them. But that’s just more for entertainment sake. In the books especially I always felt Bella had a superiority complex over Jacob which makes no objective sense given how she feels about Edward.

The part in the books that turned me from team Jacob to team nobody was when imprinting was introduced. After that it seemed selfish and cruel of Jacob to try a relationship with Bella because he knew that eventually someone would show up and he would have no choice but to leave her. And it's evidenced by the the Leah/Sam/Emily thing that fighting it doesn't work.
After that it really did feel like she was his wolfy beard, like if it was in the real non-fictional world it would be like if he knew he was gay in a small conservative town. And he loves his best girl friend and thought that would be enough or that it's what's expected so he actively pursued her without telling her that he's not fully attracted to her. Then one day when from her perspective everything is good he'll cheat on her because he has finally found a gay guy that he can actually be fully in love with.
The whole imprinting thing was gross anyway, but the fact that it seemed designed by the author because not every reader was team Edward really added to the assassination of Jacob's character. Maybe it was a "see readers he'll get his own soulmate one day, guaranteed" but it always felt to me super gross because it's shown that there's no choice at all. Even if you ignore the child grooming aspect, Sam tried to choose Leah, his long time girlfriend over Emily a girl he'd just met but nope resistance to the imprint equals domestic violence, so the whole thing felt more like "see no you can't like Jacob either because he'll leave Bella or hurt her trying to stay".

I’ve come to the realization after rewatching the movies so many times that I don’t like Bella and Edward together because Edward was so controlling and manipulative, and Bella wanted to be a vampire to be with Edward instead of wanting to be a vampire because SHE was intrigued by the idea and experience. If she had talked about the things she liked about being a vampire then maybe I’d feel good about it, but like you said, codependency fuels her decisions. The biggest thing I came to realize as well is that I don’t want Bella and Jacob to be together either! But this time for Jacob’s sake. I guess I just feel like he deserves to feel chosen and loved fully. And he’d never get that with Bella. She has always used him and he’s accepted it and that’s just not what he deserves. Even Movie Jacob deserves better, and god I hate Movie Jacob…

Also I saw this theory talking about how Bella being around the Cullens probably have a reaction in her body similar to using drugs (because Edward often says how enamored humans are with vampires) and they leaving Bella left her in a withdrawal situation and I think it's an interesting take. Thank you SO much for identifying that Bella was clinically depressed. That’s not something you simply get over because a lot of your power and agency is being siphoned by this illness. So many fans missed the mark on that.
I related a lot to Bella on how she was depressed after a trauma (trauma also may not be an event, but a long time suffering) not with catatonia but with seeking distractions to not deal with my hard feelings. I eventually came out of it and look back on that time like yeh, that was serious, it could have been a lot worse, I could have developed disorders and comorbidities that became chronic. Teens have intense feelings that are often dismissed by adults but because they’re still growing up, cannot be expected to have fully developed capacities to cope with them. They need support. I have seen very capable strong adults crumble and cause worry for their loved ones. Recovering from trauma should be a forefront in the healing process.
Glad Bella had her dad. Their relationship was the BEST I appreciated in the whole series. He never put her down even though he often didn’t know what to do and he reminded me of my own parents and close friends who never gave up on me ❤.
P.S. I was always Team Bella. Team Bella. I did not stutter.

Perhaps because of what happened with the Volturi she felt a lot of different things and almost forgot to reprimand what he did by flat out leaving her. However it’s not super realistic that she trusts him again wholeheartedly right away. It was a missed opportunity for character development and to break some of that codependency. The most frustrating part of the books/tv for me was how Bella kept insinuating the wolves weren’t as strong as the vampires. Like stop playing with them, they were literally designed to destroy vampires 😅.

I also really liked these high school, then I was really put off by the movies, I felt like they were a bit boring and somehow failed to give the excitement the books did. I went through a phase of really hating the series haha. Now I’m a little more neutral, though I can’t say I really recommend it. But I was always fascinated by why I had such a strong response to it in high school, I can’t deny that I did, it was very strong and it lasted a while. Even though the relationships are messed up, this series hits on something deep in a lot of people.
In high school, I understood that Bella would always choose Edward. But that sweetness in the initial friendship with Jacob, makes me team Jacob. I tend to excuse his later behavior because of that initial friendship. I would be really interesting to see what some healthy choices would look like…

I always saw the panic over aging in a completely different way than I think Meyer, and then the screenwriter and director of the movie intended.
Because Bella is already a child acting like a parent to her mother and like a spouse to her father (obviously I don’t mean the sexual side, but the need to take care of the man she lives with), I feel that she is horrified over the idea of falling into the same role with Edward and with Jacob. She obsesses over this very thing when Jacob starts showing clear signs of wanting to be more to her. She refers to herself as a cougar and makes a hard line that it’s disturbing to her to be in a relationship with a child. Yes, technically, her opinion is completely valid as she is 18 and Jacob is 16 throughout most of the series. And that legally makes her an adult and him a child. But it’s also clear that she isn’t thinking legally. She means it intellectually. She doesn’t want to be a mother figure to Jacob or Edward. And I feel like this is such her default setting that she aware of this possibility and panics over anything that makes her feel older than Edward.
That “grandmother” dream she has in this book and movie is paramount to this fear. She isn’t afraid of aging, to me. Rather she is terrified that she will eventually play the mother role in her relationship because she will one day look like Edward’s mother and then grandmother. And she knows herself enough to know that she’ll adapt that parental persona without realizing it.
That’s why she is adamant about becoming a vampire. It’s not aging and dying she fears. It’s falling into her old pattern of being the parent in her relationships.
    That’s my perspective anyhow.
As for Jacob… I loathe book Jacob and movie Jacob equally. And it’s not because I’m a fan of Edward. I loathe him too. The movies cleaned up both characters to me. Which I resented. Because their book versions were horrible and needed to be on full display. Especially during Breaking Dawn. But that’s a discussion for another time.

Seeing the spirits of others, whether that be a loved one, deity, or animal can be closely tied to their belief system, and not necessarily mean that they have a mental disorder.

I was so much into team Jacob while reading the books as an adult. I just loved everything he could offer Bella, the example I love the most being the night they had pasta with his family and neighbours. As a kid, I just read the first book and was on this journey to reading all of them in english since it's not my original language. I stopped with Eclipse because I couldn't bare the part where Jacob "steals a kiss" from Bella and it's basically assault. I still feel sick to my stomach remembering she tries to fight back and gives up because he is too strong, so she just stands there and "let him finish". The way Charlie reacted to knowing the kiss was stolen, not consensual, also made me sick, because this comes from a book aimed at girls in their 13 it's so revolting how normalized it was. I blame the author, tho, because everything that is not healthy is what she writes as desirable in a love relationship. I would be team Jacob untill the end, but this ended my playfull engagement with the series.

I feel like when people talk about Edward stopping Bella from seeing Jacob, they are ignoring the reality of the supernatural element at play. We saw what happened to Emily because of Sam. This isn't just Edward being jealous and controlling. He literally believes Bella could die, and he believes that she doesn't fully understand how dangerous the situation is.
Idk, personally, I would probably resort to some drastic measures if I thought the person I loved was in serious danger and they didn't understand how serious it was.

I'm so glad you made this video because it helped me understand her a bit better. The night terrors were always in the back of my mind, when listing her issues but the hallucinations were the main focus, for me. When I was in highschool, New Moon was my least favorite book of the saga because I didn't understand this reaction from her.
Now I kinda get it... The trauma she experienced in the first book probably made her mental health worse. The obsession she has with Edward was intensified by the rescue. Then, ending up in the hospital probably destroyed the little bit of self-esteem she had left. This is why I’m team Jacob as I have explained myself that Bella went out of her way as she lead him on based on the ulterior motives she had. Jacob in the movie was so loyal to her and she straight played him like a violin and ppl who realize the truth will still ignore it like eh

Can you do The Summer I Turned Pretty next? I know it's the hype right now but I'd love to hear your professional take on it ❤

2 words of advice for the Cullen kids in the opening of the book...
Edward: Be aware of Bella not being indestructible. Remember that you know how to not shove humans so hard into furniture that they collapse.
Alice: Bella's quite klutzy. Maybe save the China and glass decorations until she's a tad less clumsy, or a bit more indestructible.
Finally: As stated in this video, Edward, make sure Bella makes it back home safe before you take off.

I like to imagine she didn't write a script for this video and is just on a rant about twilight she's been thinking about for years

I liked Jacob in the first books much more then the movies. I stopped reading the books after New Moon because Bells had zero character development. I had to watch the movies in rehab years latter..

This was super interesting! I was always team Jacob ever since New Moon was published simply because Jacob is so good in the book. He's not perfect but no one is and he is a book character after all, but so much better than Edward.

You explained why I am single. Thanks. I am boring for being open about wanting to be with someone.

I find it so interesting that no one is bringing up the toxicity of Jacob and Bella being a supposedly viable option. I know that Steph made great points about Edward being toxic to her because he's literally a predator and she's prey, but Bella can be harmed as well by Jacob. Not for the same reasons, but harmed none the less. Hence Jacob pushing her away so much at first after his evolution into shifting. He could harm her like Sam Uley harmed Emily Young, which was a very real and legitimate concern.
On top of the fact that he also doesn't age! With every time he shifts into his wolf form, this attributes to his own immortality which makes them unmatched.
Plus... we can't leave out his uncontrolled ability to imprint on someone. And since he didn't imprint on Bella, he could've done it with someone else, thus causing Bella to be in the same position with him like she was when Edward left. The comparison very clearly being shown as the love triangle between Sam, Emily and Lea.
Looking at this from an unromanticized, therapeutic perspective, neither of them are a good match for her.

Also, Jacob had times when he would get mean and say hurtful things to Bella. How is that healthy? Like, we need to get over thinking he is "hot" and see it for what it actually is. Yes Bella used Jacob as a bandaid and that was wrong. Edward was a vampire and everything they feel is intense and he NEVER had those feelings for q girl in his existence so he had no idea what to do. I truly rhink people are just obseesed with how Jacob looks and not his true personality. He wasnt all that great.

I think the part of the movie when Jacob,Bella and Mike went to the movies and he got out Character because that is when his transformation was starting. That’s also why he left.
