Another 10 minutes of my life invested in learning new things that pay back for a lifetime. That's great technique and displayed in a way that helps people understand what you're doing and how to do it! Great job with the split-screen set up, too, Mike. Been using my B7610 Kubota for 12 years now and that's the first time someone explained the right way to fill the bucket! Excellent!
My wife said if there was ever a delivery of rock like that around our anniversary or Valentine’s Day, I had better make sure there were no sling shots in close proximity.

Tell your "friend" to put his hand on the bottom of the steering wheel to back up a trailer, then turn the wheel the way you want the trailer to go.

Great educational video.... 'Shake' rather than 'dump' - perfect. That has always been my preferred method - but you are better at it than me. One thing you may want to mention, especially for the viewers who may not have as much experience in developing driveways/roads - not all rock is created equal. The rock shown in your video is essentially 'fractured rock' - it has been run through a gravel crushing machine. The fractured or sharp edges allows it to compact together and have some structural integrity. This is what you want. Stay away from the 'round stone', it will never compact. The rock you are placing you call limestone - does it fracture or break down to smaller sizes over time? We don't have a lot of limestone where I come from. We use general gravel - a mixture of many types of stone (e.g. granite, basalt, igneous, metamorphic, sedimentary, ....). The various types of rock are different colours and thus is locally called 'rainbow rock'. When crushed you can order it in various grades (e.g. 1", 3/4", 1/2" ....). The gravel consists of some rock that is harder than others which results in the softer rock continuing to break down over time which wedges between the harder rock. The result is a very stable long lasting surface that has 'give and take' characteristics throughout the freeze/thaw cycles of the seasons, but has good drainage during wet periods. The bottom line is - stay away from 'round rock'.

Great video and commentary.
This really helped me spread 10 yards of compost with my tractor bucket. It worked! I tried back dragging piles. But compost is lighter and fluffier than dirt and ALL of it moves. Now compost is a lot different than stone too. Stone is heavy and wants to fall. But shaking the stick still worked pretty good. Thanks, Mike.

Limestone is great to crush down and binds together. I use it and white granite. Best road base (not topping) is a mixture of fines and small max 1". Let that settle under rain and use and then top that with a good layer. The bottom will lock in and keep most of the stone on top from finding the center of the earth!
I find my tooth bar really helps fill the bucket and lets it do it on the ground level. It also tends to bounce rock - so it is hard to use in this operation.

Yep, I do it the same way with both my skid steer and tractor. Have you ever thought about hooking up a pasture harrow to your Polaris and drag it after you spread? I do and it evens things out really nice.

Great advice Mike, I do mine the same way when spreading gravel.
I have gotten semi loads of stone and have them tailgate it the length of our driveway and then I just tweak it with our Deere. You will need a good truck driver to do this nicely.

Shaking is the KEY!
I was always curious if this was damaging my hydrolics. regardless so many not know this trick.
So very helpful. We are about to start this process Thursday. This will be super useful and save a lot of headache. We are rookies with regard to this type of work. I have always done the construction on the inside, and never dealt with anything related to outside. We just bought at acres, and we did all pur culvert, so now the driveway. Yes. We graded it, leveled it for the proper flow to avoid standing water. We packed, added dirt and rock, packed it again, and added more good dirt and rock. Been driving over it from left to right each time I'm on land. So, now I will get the top layer off the cleared 10-12 foot wide path, move dirt from some spots to otgers to correct a couple low spots, and start on the gravel. Question? We are having enough gravel to do 12ft wide, 8" inches thick, about 800-900 feet. So it's something like 512 tons. What is the best way to have them dump that? All in one flat spot, a few flat spots, etc. Thanks in advance for any help.
Thanks Mike for using my intro , kinda weird at first. Great method of spreading gravel , pretty much the technique I use and works well. Lots of mud here will be getting a load pretty soon.

I think it would wear the loader control fast and the loader pins and quick attach some. Have you noticed that?

Speed has a effect to. I can take and lay down 21-23 ton with my 1025r deer in about 30minutes and have vary little bumps with higher travel speed and not shaking it out.
That was super helpful. I haven't tried the technique yet, but I will!

Newer cat dozers have the shake button on right joystick. Agitates the blade to shake dirt or gravel off the blade

I've seen you do that a lot in past videos. It really does work for you, but when I try its not all that smooth and leaves small piles. I usually end up back dragging to smooth things out. I wish I had a landscape rake to go back over gravel that I try to spread with the loader. Good video. Thanks Mike!

Awesome video Mike. I notice some of the commenters have different results with their attempts, which is ok, and not to say they are wrong in their attempts. I think there are a numbers of factors that will also come into play. One item is the limestone, easily distributes from the bucket. A sand or gravel mix may not disperse as easily. Another item is the operator and the equipment. Mike your are very familiar with your equipment and operate it masterfully. Experienced operator. And last item, hydraulic controls act differently from one piece of equipment to another, depending on the state of repair..... just some quick thoughts...... love the video, well explained...... Nicely done Mike. Would just add make sure your moving when you start to spread of you will start will a pile and bump. Same as tailgate spreading with a dump truck!

Hey Mike suck it up and get an asphalt drive and you won't need to put all that stone in the drive and you vehicles stay a little cleaner . And it makes snow plowing easier

Very nice job. I've always admired how you do that. Around here though, most folks have the stone tailgated out by the dump truck driver. I realize that's not always desirable or possible. Where I do need practice is spreading dirt or manure on my garden. Maybe you should take a road trip to central Ohio for me.
Yeah we often have the driver spread it with the truck in central Missouri as well. Had a 300 ft dead end dirt drive that needed to be used year round and driver said he could not do it because he would get stuck in the mud backing in before he could drive out spreading the stone. Had to teach him how to spread while backing in on the new stone so he would not get stuck. Poor guy never saw swamp land get filled while backing in on the stone!!! He got it though as I finished it off with a hand rake. No tractor available.
Good technique. Also, when you push into the pile and raise your bucket, it puts more weight on the front axle which (if you are in 4wd) equals more traction.
