UA-cam is great for watching old figjts, boxing or hockey. Clark Gillies could really hit. One punch & that was usually it. This was the Islanders in the midst of winning 19 straight post season series. 19 Mind blowing.
I would put Jim Gordon in the pantheon of hockey broadcasters. Of course, the legendary Danny Gallivan sits alone at the top of all hockey broadcasters.
@@MrPunkforlife tough guy Nick should have gone at him then, Gillies pounded his teammate. Gillies would have destroyed Fotiu and Nicky knew it, hence his gloves being glued on.
@@MrPunkforlife did Fotiu enjoy watching the Islanders win the finals again that year or was he too disappointed with losing the quarter finals that year?
Buddy and I at this game at the other end of the Hospodar fight. We saw Gillies circle around and grab Hospodar and then you saw the blood on the ice and MSG went silent.
You could actually see Hospodar’s teeth go flying if you see the fight in slow motion. He had to get facial reconstructive surgery after that fight. Other fighters talked about that fight for years, and most didn’t wanna mess with Gillies. I LOVED that fight, because Hospodar used to try to pick fights with non fighters. Dave Hoyda did the same thing, he beat up Mike Bossy, who definitely wasn’t a fighter. Next time Gillies was on the ice lined up against Hoyda, he destroyed Hoyda. I think the Flyers got rid of him after he got beat up so bad.
@@paranormalskeptic3893 I saw it live at the other end of the ice. Gillies came around the pack and grabbed Hospodar and it was over quickly! Gillies had a hell of a game but the Rangers won it late! Hospodar was never the same as a Ranger.
Wow MSG was insane back then. COUNTING DOWN the seconds during a random regular season game!! Ranger fans were rowdy and aggressive and deserved a team similar to the Flyers or even the Islanders but didnt have one. The 81-82 season was the beginning of the “Smurfs” brand which lasted until probably 1988 or so when Michel Bergeron came in and the Rangers then had a solid ten years of toughness.
Yep, the US winning the Gold Medal in 1980 was the worst thing to happen to the Rangers since the 1972 draft when they passed over Bob Nystrom 5 times. They hired Herb Brooks and tried to re-create the US Olympic team. But somebody forgot to tell them that the NHL didn't play by Olympic rules where fighting was not allowed. To make matters worse, the Islanders got probably the most NHL worthy Olympian, Ken Morrow. The Smurfs played boring hockey when they weren't getting pushed around.
Yeah those were the glory years for the Islanders no doubt. In fact 1,000 years from now it will still be the only thing Islander fans can hang their hat on
@@dp6297 what do you guys have to hang your hat on?? 4 cups in 100 years lol 3 of which were basically a mens beer league tournament 3 cups before 1940 and 94 was mostly won with rent a players. your teams history is pathetic
Eddie Hospodar became Eddie Hospital. He finally picked on someone who could fight, and he wound up getting reconstructive facial surgery. Crazy thing is, Gillies and Hospodar wound up as teammates on the Sabres. Gillies invited him to dinner at his house, and they became friends.
Hoss was not a punching bag. He beat Jay Wells and gave Paul Holmgren a couple of tough battles. But after the Gillies defeat I think he chose his opponent a little more carefully.
Does anybody remember which season it was when Cablevsion and MSG had a dispute which resulted in no Ranger games being broadcast on Cablevsion the entire season? Of course a few years later the Dolans, who owned Cablevision, would buy the Rangers.
All during the dynasty years, Cablevision did not have MSG or USA. Every once in a random while, some of the programming on those stations was piped in on a "Montage" channel, but no regular programming from either station until the mid 80's.
Phil at the end said this is what hockey is all about! Not in the land of Bettman. That game had hitting, fighting, scoring, and end to end play and now it's weasel hockey.
YOU CAN SAY WHAT YOU WANT ABOUT MILBURY BUT HE WAS A BAD COACH AND SCOUT. HE RUINED THE ISLANDER AND A WAS A HORRIBLE COMMENTATOR AND GAME ANALIZER. WAS ALSO VERY prejudicious TOWARD EVERY RANGER GAME HE COVERED. I BELIEVE HE NOT ALLOWED ON TV ANYMORE BECAUSE OF SOMETHING HE SAID COVERING A LIVE GAME.BUT DESPITE ALL OF THE HE WAS ON A GREAT BRUIN TEAM BACK THEN ALOT OF TALENT AND WELL-ROUNDED TEAM. i LOVED WATCHING THAT FULL BRAWL BENCHES CLEARED WITH THE ISLANDERS BACK IN THE DAY. I BELIEVE HE HAS NEVER WON A STANLEY CUP EITHER.
I could watch these all day. 80-86 best years of hockey I ever experienced.
Agreed by far
after hearing Mike Bossy scores!!!573 times in the past..still brings me joy..
He was talented

The Rangers crowd when Allison scored and Beck you just don't hear crowd noise like that anymore those days are gone unfortunately

Was this the one time in ten years that NYR beat the Islanders?
Best rivalry back then
gillies and bossy were some combo
Clark GILLS, Mike BASSy, Brian TROUTier, al HARBOR
Lots of brawn on those two squads but it would have been great to see Clark Gillies go with either Barry Beck or Nicky Fotiu.
Nick Fotiu and I are both born on May 25th.
Fascinating
Hospodar: "Hey boys, does anyone know a good way to clear out my sinuses?"
Gillies: "Hold my beer."
Hospodar had been messing with Gillies for a while, and Gillies was telling him knock it off or else. That night was Hospidar's night.
