Spain was superior in all aspects to England. England can count itself lucky to be only 1 goal behind.
They played some decent football in the minutes after the second Spanish goal, when their strategy of park the bus and go for pens shattered.
Spain on the other hand played with passion the whole game, like if they were behind from the beginning and giving it all to catch up, except they were never behind, even if the draw felt like being left behind and losing.
Anything can happen in a football match and anyone can win anything against anyone, and fairness does not exist.
But by the numbers, Spain was undoubtedly the winner and deservedly so. I already said back then that the Spain-Germany was the real final, and whoever won was probably going to win the whole thing.

I watched this final as a neutral fan, but being Italian I always find it hard to sympathize for England (nothing against the player, it's mainly due to arrogance of their fans). That said, when people criticize England's "conservative" approach to big international matches nobody considers this aspect: english players are constantly under an insane amount of pressure, because of the lack of trophies and fan culture, and I think that the pressure builds up even more when the squad is good/favorite to win. Most of the starting 11 play in incredible teams and are used to dominating games, yet they don't show that same confidence when playing for the national team. While I don't think Southgate is a great manager, blaming him for the players' attitude is not entirely fair. There's clearly a mental block, due to the pressure these guys feel when they play internationally.

Southgate has to manage the fact that English football season is much longer than other countries in Europe. Puts them at a disadvantage. England don’t hold possession because as a country they coach players to hold possession and to be technical. They train them to move the ball fast and quickly. The prioritise young players who are tall, strong and quick. They do not prioritise technical players at all. That’s a big reason why they don’t hold possession with purpose. Also England very rarely produce players that can dictate games like Rodri, Xavi, iniesta, fabregas that can dictate games. If a team wants to control the game they need players on a technical level that can control the game. Rice is a typical English midfielder who’s box to box but struggles technically unless he’s surrounded by technical like he is at arsenal.
