a man with a plan.... he focuses on what his customers want. i imagine there are stores seeing this and already putting together their hiring packages for this man.
Hy-Vee Wine and Spirits customer here; 3 out of 10 this dude picks is out of this world good. 6 out of 10 are excellent. Only 1 out of 10 is a dud. Keeps me coming back.
This gentleman takes whiskey to a whole other level. To take that much time to get your pick the way you want is just a sign of quality period. I'm leary of box store picks is there really someone picking these barrels or is the store just excepting? What is sent to them? He is differently taking the time to get the profile he wants. Excellent video!!
Dave seems like a great dude. I never understood when store owners state I try to find the flavor profile that my customer wants when it doesn’t matter what part of the region your from everyone’s pallet is difference so finding the right flavor profile for your customer base is pretty much impossible. I think store owners say that since it sounds good but they generally pick a barrel that fits what they like and hope it works for everyone else as well.
Dave spends half his day explaining how he goes about making store picks. The man clearly knows his stuff. So what do you do? Instead of purchasing one of his store picks, you buy some non descript local bourbon as if you were a tourist buying a shot glass from every state you visit. The disappointment on his face when you said you were buying that bottle ,was heartbreaking. And you didn't even purchase the good local bourbon!! Unreal.
Dave gets some great picks. I’ve grabbed a few. He also had a great El Mayor Cristalino Tequila and a Myers Single Barrel Rum store picks that I had to get. Dave knows what he’s doing.
Thanks for coming to Cedar Rapids. I live a few miles from this HyVee Drug Store. I have had Dave's enthusiastic rundowns on his picks. I do have his Blueberry Cobbler. I think is is wonderful. I need to get into there tomorrow and taste that Knob Creek Rye.
Dude! I love this video. I enjoy your regular bourbon hunts, but this was an information bomb. I love it. I would like to see you do more of these and if you can get into distilleries and interview then that would be great too.
That TOO WILD that you met Dave! I met him about 1 1/2 years ago while visiting my son who lived in Coralville, Iowa. I met him at the Cedar Rapids Hyvee. That was WAYYYYYYY Before I started my Channel! Great Job as Always Hunter!
Man I tell you that guy is a class act,, a store owner like that is something I never see here in South Louisiana,,, By the way a nice table smash you did there ..... Thanks
Well crap! Now I’m going to have to go to Iowa…. Not just for the Field of Dreams… but for bourbon!?!? 🤣 This guys seems like a guy I could sit and sip some great pours with! Great video my friend! You’re awesome Hunter! 🥃
Man. I’m excited to see this video! I was hoping to do my traditional, post Sunday lunch bourbon Hunter video watch. I’m visiting Charleston for the first time this next week. I was hoping to see more bourbon spots there. But hey man, I can watch you do your thing in Iowa too!
Wow - loved the detail he went into about the process for the Maker's Mark pick! That was so interesting - I had no idea they had it down to that much of a science.
@Juannavarrolagos lol got you beat flew to the USA twice last year and found 2023 cellar aged at Sydney Airport lol .. should have booked a cheap flight same day return to NZ instead ! 😅
Because some brands are much much easier to get store picks with. So for the most part certain brand store picks can be found easily. Also based on revenue thresholds too
Yep, pretty sure I was right about him going to Cedar Ridge. Too bad the SLB guys beat him to the punch on a double oaked pick. Those will probably be pretty good - if they are cask strength
I had the option for a double oak and I tasted everything. Decided on a Straight Bourbon around 123 ish proof. It was lights out better than everything I had that day. I also left a barrel there for next year 😉
so sad that even in Iowa they have to put theft deterrent caps on the bottles. why do people think it is ok to steal? I have gone 66 years without stealing. it is not that hard. a really sad comment on our society
This is my city, i wish you picked up one of those Yellowstone picks, one of his best and hides the proof well. Hope you ran thro local craft, hometown spirits, and bootleggin barzinis while you were in the neighborhood.
Very knowledgeable dude! Also seems like someone who sees a 6 pack in the mirror by squinting just right and tilting your head at the perfect angle. #HOApresident vibes
I get a ton of bottles, pretty much anything I want. Also, once that Iowa bottle sells I’m not getting anymore. How is it? Solid product!! Loved this episode and was with Dave whole time until he said Maccallan. Remember the Tommy Boy butcher quote…
This guys tips on tasting whiskey are good, but I do find that amount of ritual pointless. The palate acclimation is a very useful technique when working with a limited sample. When you are sitting down with a bottle you don't need to faff about so much - your palate will acclimate after a couple sips. AKA - don't do all that when you are just sharing whiskey with friends who are novices with whiskey. The acclimation helps them get past the heat but the rest is pretentious to people who aren't massive enthusiasts.
Yeah you got to check out Cheech and Chong. They do a skit called Dave. I think that would be right up your alley Dave's not here . Yeah I would listen to Dave on that rebel 100. He's right on on that man. That is a great great pour. I'm surprised you don't know that, but that's going to be a probably new favorite rebel distiller's choice as where Brooks distiller's choice. They're really good too man
Too bad you didn’t check out some of the other stores in the area. Hyvee wine and spirits is different at each location because the managers have a lot of autonomy. I live just north of Cedar Rapids in a suburb. I would have taken you to some smaller stores (non-Hyvee) that are real allocation honey holes. This week I just opened a Joseph Magnus Cigar Blend ($199) and a Baby Jane ($69 from Widow Jane). For your hunts, use the local knowledge… maybe next time.
Hello Scott. I’m heading thru Cedar Rapids in a couple of weeks. Would you mind directing me to some of the stores you would recommend? Much appreciated.
This video is NOT for me holy this owner is wild. Thinks he knows a lot but he was presenting a couple points that were incorrect. He must have paid a lot to have you come by because he was STRESSED.
Men, you’re just really bad in communication with other people. Stop recording yourself, prepare your questions at home and record the shopowners. For Gods sake, maybe you hire someone with better camera presence than yourself…
I appreciate that man's dedication to picking his bottles.
Yeah the passion is there
I hated that guy 😂
even though it can be difficult to be talked to for so long , these kinds of people are treasures to the world !
I appreciate that Dave's insight doesn't read like some else's page - it's from his years of realworld experience. What a gem.
I like how you said "I had to listen to that whole thing so you all have to too!"
😂😂
Dave is a national treasure.
Dave needs to take a breath and let others take part in a conversation....
Dave knows his stuff, man is trully dedicated to the job and his bussines. So refreshing to see people like him.
a man with a plan.... he focuses on what his customers want. i imagine there are stores seeing this and already putting together their hiring packages for this man.
explaining that makers mark private select was intense!
My brain was having a hard time keeping track
it made sense to me until the staves
Hy-Vee Wine and Spirits customer here; 3 out of 10 this dude picks is out of this world good. 6 out of 10 are excellent. Only 1 out of 10 is a dud. Keeps me coming back.
Good to know! I enjoyed my time there! 😂
Which store is he at?
the knowledge this dave guy has is top tier. i’d definitely have a pour with that guy
Indeed!
Daves explanation of how he picks the Makers looks like he may have blown a few of your brain cells.
Yeah I was trying to absorb as much as possible
This gentleman takes whiskey to a whole other level. To take that much time to get your pick the way you want is just a sign of quality period. Yup, Dave is the man! I go there a lot and his picks are always great. Hardest part is not buying them all...
Dave is a legend
I learned so much from him
Dave's commitment to the craft is hazmat proof. Bonus points to BH for the modem crashing special effects.
Thank you thank you
Dave seems like a great dude. Yupp! Impossible to please everyone but Dave really takes the passion to the next level!
Store owners need to take pages out of this guy's book!! If I lived in Iowa, I'd be at that store all the time! Great video!
Dude gets my respect
I don’t know if I love anything in this world like Dave loves his job
He is like a scientist. Really informative and interesting.
I know right? He's a true wizard of the spirit!
Dave spends half his day explaining how he goes about making store picks. The man clearly knows his stuff. So what do you do? Dave could talk underwater with a mouthfull of marbles !! 😅
Do you always watch videos of experts talking about their field of expertise, then complain about the expert talking alot?
yOuRe sO sMaRt BrO
He doesn’t like the word smooth…but silky is ok😂.
I was wondering if someone was going to catch that
I like silky because it’s a texture of the whiskey.
Dave gets some great picks. I’ve grabbed a few.
He also had a great El Mayor Cristalino Tequila and a Myers Single Barrel Rum store picks that I had to get. Dave knows what he’s doing.
I agree! Thank you for watching
I’m with Dave now having a sample!
THE WIZARDDDDD
Thanks for coming to Cedar Rapids. I live a few miles from this HyVee Drug Store. I have had Dave's enthusiastic rundowns on his picks. I do have his Blueberry Cobbler. I think is is wonderful. I need to get into there tomorrow and taste that Knob Creek Rye.
Nice! Let me know what you think!
13:16 leaning on the bottles was risky and interesting 😂
I knew I could outrun everybody if it came crashing down
The Wizard cut scene was crazy hahahah love your vids dude KEEP GOING!!
Thanks! Will do! 🤙🏼🥃
Awesome! What a great guy with a love for bourbon and his customers! Midwest is best!
Thank you for watching!
Dude! I love this video. I enjoy your regular bourbon hunts, but this was an information bomb. I love it. I would like to see you do more of these and if you can get into distilleries and interview then that would be great too.
Let’s go!!!! Love the content all the edits so funny 😂
Glad you like them! I appreciate you watching!

I love good whiskey talk. He's a good guy
What a great video - keep doing this kind of content.
Well crap! Now I’m going to have to go to Iowa…. Not just for the Field of Dreams… but for bourbon!?!? 🤣

I’m visiting Charleston for the first time this next week. I was hoping to see more bourbon spots there. But hey man, I can watch you do your thing in Iowa too!
Enjoy charleston! Go by my usual spots and say hey! Who knows I might be in a store chopping it up
@@Bourbon_Hunter it would be cool to bump into you man! I’ll check them out! Cheers!
Best video yet. What a learning experience.
Glad you enjoyed it! 😎🤝🏼
Wow, that guy is full of knowledge, very interesting! Great store, thanks for the visit!
Thanks for watching!
Cool video man! Awesome to see you getting out to other places and promoting owners and their stores.
Appreciate it!
Wow - loved the detail he went into about the process for the Maker's Mark pick! That was so interesting - I had no idea they had it down to that much of a science.
Glad it was helpful! Thank you for watching!
Great video, very knowledgeable gentleman!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Got you beat. Flew 7500 miles for bourbon lol love the video
Japan?
Australia, picked up 5 bottles of cellar aged for msrp 😂
@Juannavarrolagos lol got you beat flew to the USA twice last year and found 2023 cellar aged at Sydney Airport lol .. should have booked a cheap flight same day return to NZ instead ! 😅
@@Bourbon_Hunter All good BH, your cellar aged went from KY to Aus nearly 8000 miles then Syd to NY 9800 miles then the short trip to SC... pmsl 😂
Great video love getting the knowledge from Dave.
Wow I get into Cedar Rapids pretty often. Will have to hit up Dave. I had no idea some HyVee liquor managers went to that extent.
He is pretty passionate! Gotta love it
Need this guy to open a store down here in Ft. Worth, Tx seems like a great guy!🥃
Texas has some great shops too!
Where does he keep his graphing calculator?
U doing a bourbon hunt video in Iowa next?
Dave is great.
There is a reason we have two ears and one mouth... old mate needs to take a breath and let others talk....
next time wait until Dave is not there omg he likes to hear himself lol
This guy is playing chess and I’m playing checkers
We are playing tic tac toe
@@Bourbon_Hunterhey man. tic tac toe sounds promising!
Those were some… thorough… explanations…
On a separate note, why do so many stores have the same brands for store picks?
Because some brands are much much easier to get store picks with. So for the most part certain brand store picks can be found easily. Also based on revenue thresholds too
Great store and video
Glad you enjoyed! Thank you for watching!
Thats my hometown and I worked at Hy Vee for 7 years. Great video!
Thanks for watching! Cedar Rapids is pretty cool! Flat tho. Lots of flat land
@@Bourbon_Hunter haha farm town 🤣
Which liquor stores should I go to in Greenville, South Carolina?
The Meyers Rum picks are fantastic, especially at $17, and even more so if they’re finished in Sazerac barrels
I wish Cedar Rapids was closer to me, this guy is pretty interesting.
Right!
Yep, pretty sure I was right about him going to Cedar Ridge. Too bad the SLB guys beat him to the punch on a double oaked pick. Those will probably be pretty good - if they are cask strength

Solid information but man I felt like I was trying to drink from a fire hydrant
If I'm ever in Iowa I know where I'm going. That dude for sure is going to have amazing picks.
They were very good indeed! Cheers! 🥃
Wow, he's a Bourbon guys Bourbon guy.
A bourbon wizard some might say
School was in session.... 🤔 I may have had a birthday in the making of this video 😂
Joe! You gotta come to the next bottle share!
@Bourbon_Hunter I definitely do. Seems everytime they pop up I'm traveling, family in town, or something conflicts. I'll make it happen
Should of came to Des Moines theirs lots of good spots to bourbon hunt
I didnt have a car to ride around in or I would have!
This is my city, i wish you picked up one of those Yellowstone picks, one of his best and hides the proof well. Hope you ran thro local craft, hometown spirits, and bootleggin barzinis while you were in the neighborhood.
It’s hilarious that people still believe each area of the tongue is still responsible for bitter savory etc. PSA your whole tongue tastes everything
I hope you make it up to Minnesota while you're up here. We dont have any good bourbon, but come anyway!
Maybe one day!
lol did you actually get the blackberry and then the cobbler
Very knowledgeable dude! Also seems like someone who sees a 6 pack in the mirror by squinting just right and tilting your head at the perfect angle. #HOApresident vibes
LETS GO!
Slowly getting to the big video 🤝🏼
Did he take a breathe?
😂
Also... Rebel 100 is my go to daily drinker.
Sooooo that pick wasn’t good enough to take? lol
Limited suitcase space good sir
That was so cool 😎
Thank you for watching! Cheers 🥃
Hmmm…lets line them up for a blind taste test.
I get a ton of bottles, pretty much anything I want. Also, once that Iowa bottle sells I’m not getting anymore. How is it? Solid product!!

duuuuuuude thats my store! We shoulda meet up
Man im sorry! Had to keep it lowkey because I was picking a bomb barrel just down the road!
My man can talk
Darn right but so can we about the things were passionate about
thats crazy i from there and know dave thats funny asf that your in cr
I try to move in silence 🤷🏻♂️🥃 Loved Cedar Rapids tho!
After all that, you didn't walk out with one of his picks. Must have broken his heart a little bit
Limited Luggage space 🤷🏻♂️ Had to get local stuff ive never seen before

Shut up Dave 😂
Fuse…blown!

Mouth open does not make for a softer experience. Brings out proof in my experience
I agree with you 100%
Rebel not Renal.
Steiner math
"smooth" is what unrefined palates default to when they can't describe what they're tasting.
KYLE BUSCH REBEL
KYLE BUSCH. I am a Byron fan tho

Naw man I was in town for a Barrel pick so I shopped around
Yeah came across as an advertisement ( hope it wasn't), but dang that was rough to sit through.

You need to work on your English grammar. It's clearly not your native language.
Too much lol.
This was extremely boring nonsensical garbage 🗑️
