I remember watching this when it first aired. he goes on later about "the witness state", whereas opposed to coming emotionally involved with traumatic or even pleasurable experiences you could watch your experiences pass you by. sort of a Buddhist approach to meditation applied to patients for therapy.
I used to watch this program on KTCA 2 in MN in the 80's. I even wrote to Mishlove with a question, and he answered, very exciting. Now, years later I learned about Shinzen Young, and my curiosity brought me back to these fantastic discussions.
You can't hold 2 conscious thoughts in your mind at the same time. The concentration of the mantra stops the minds 'chatter'. It's almost like training wheels on a bicycle, at a certain point, you start 'bicycling', same with meditation. Keep repeating the mantra, until you no longer need it, you have arrived, you're meditating! Good Luck!
I just like to say one thing. To all those that have difficulty understanding what this conversation is about please meditate. I watched this video 2weeks ago after practicing meditation every morning and night and what I noticed is that everything makes more sense when I view it from the "focus" point of view. To a busy mind all this information is useless because it takes what it sees and hears and changes it to its own childish views and misses the broader picture.
@ThinkingAllowedTV I remember watching it because this interview was one reason i bought the thinking allowed book of which shinzen young was one among many other transcripts from the show but i don't remember watching it that far back. It's possible...
I never heard the term "Prayer of Quiet"..to describe deeper altered states. If you have studied unassisted natural childbirth it would be very similar to the state a woman experiences right before giving birth-very high levels of oxytocin which is known as the love hormone. The medical profession unfortunately does not usually allow a woman to experience this in a hospital setting. It may be why the birth of Jesus in a stable born with no noise or drugs is important in Christianity. Bonding.
if you do that you let go, you let come, you become so and so, get deeper... you'll be great; okay, who is that who needs to do something in order to become something else?!

It's good to hear people discussing what really matters, drilling your way deep in to the truths of the human mind.
The flowchart is in his most recent book, The Science of Enlightenment. Fabulous compilation of a lifetime of teaching.
