    I'm just doing an honest review here...so please, no offense intended to both.
    Kung-fu guy: Your attacks, kicks and punches are way off the striking distance, you actually have better form but you need to time it more precise for your strikes to land accurately, and not waste energy hitting blank space.
    Karate guy: You have nice and quite more accurate timing attacks but your forms are quite off...you'd have a better impact if you stiffen and perfected your forms on impact...although of course this is just a light spar...but, *practice does not makes perfect - practice makes permanent*...you don't want to be like that in a real fight or in a tournament.
    All in all, kudos and respect to both of you, you both have great stamina and endurance to last a spar for more than 6 minutes. Then again, both should practice on distance coverage for a more effective and efficient attacks by striking ONLY when you are firm that your attacks connects and impacts to avoid hitting air and thus making yourself open to counters and blows.
    Just a friendly suggestion from an old veteran of Mixed Traditional MA fighter practitioner for more than 35 years. Respect.

      You're welcome. I think I'm more often out of range when using animal styles, perhaps because I'm more used to more kickboxing like footwork and punches to set up my Kung Fu kicks and also that there's certain strikes especially the snake strikes, that I wanna throw from a distance where I know they won't connect. I like to set up kicks with punches, or animal style strikes, so that's the cause some of the time. However, I have also observed some instances where I'm throwing the kicks out fo range, even when leading with the kick. :)

      @@ZenDragonUA-camChannel maybe it's just because you're such a nice guy, that you don't want to hurt your partner because it's just a spar...but believe me...they can take it...if not, they won't wanna spar with you again :D
      Done that in my younger days, but I found out that they actually don't pull their punches while I do, worrying that I might hurt them...and ended up seeming to lose on the spar...it doesn't hurt to be 'savage' sometimes y'know :D
      Good luck, you obviously have such great potential, but sometimes the good guy within takes control at the wrong time. It's OK to beat up your partner once in a while, with good intent of course ;)

      @@ricofikri Thanks, at times I become too friendly, but only if I haven't sparred in a while, or if I feel the opponent is much less skilled (definitely not the case in this video, in fact, I'd only say that was the case with one sparring video on this channel. It's called Animal Style Sparring with interruption). However, I've landed plenty of strikes including head kicks, a lot more than what's been recorded for videos, but I think I'll do a compilation of moments like that from sparring videos on this channel at some point. In this case, I was more concerned with representing the style and putting on a good show than with defeating the opponent to be honest, what was most important to me was to showcase Kung Fu techniques, stay within the style and so some flashy techniques, while my opponent did the same representing his Karate roots. :)

      @ZenDragonYoutubeChannel  6 років тому +9

      Thanks Camren :) I think there's not enough people showing such techniques in application under pressure. The reason being that a lot of people who train traiditional martial arts focus only on the "art" aspect and don't test it in sparring and develop fighting instincts with it. I also spar without using animal styles, and I think regardless of the style or technique, you need sparring experience to be able to make it work in a combative context. The only reason why Muay Thai and Boxing produces more great fighters is because those sports emphasise sparring so much in their training.

    a piece of advice to the kung fu fighter, use less the foot and more the hands, the animals styles work better when use more the hands than the foot, don't be afraid of get close of your opponent, mainly on counter attacks, cut or clamp your hair and close your clothes, just a tip from a hung gar fighter

      Some Kung Fu styles, generally southern ones, for instance Hung Gar focus less on the feet and more on the hands. In the sparring video where I use this style vs Wing Chun and the one where I use it vs JKD I land more palmstrikes from close range, but I still do a lot of high kicks. Anyways, appreciate the feedback. I'll keep it in mind :)

    Overall I think you both did very well. I'm very excited to see someone out there trying to really use kung fu. That said, you seemed a little heavy on your feet. Kung fu/wushu's biggest advantage is speed. You can't use this if you are double weighted. Your commitment to applying the techniques in a way more true to the form is also hurting your performance. The techniques are about learning principles. The principles are what should be applied.
    Again, great job. Definitely way better than what most people put out in the name of kung fu these days!!!

      Thanks. I like to experiment and test things out in sparring. I am actually more comfortable fighting in a more kickboxing/sanda like kind of way, but this is great practise, and I think people need to see that animal style techniques can be pulled off in dynamic sparring against a resisting opponent. If you watch thru my sparring videos, you'll find more self defense like sparring vs 2 opponents, stuff with various types of martial arts weapons, stuff that's more sanda kickboxing like, and some more animal kung fu sparring. I have 3 more style vs style sparring videos, where I use tigerfist/tiger claw, all of them released this year: vs JKD,, vs Wing Chun vs and one vs Muay Thai (we'll do another, as my opponent didn't put in his best performance and I was distracted a bit by the camera guy a few times, but it has some very cool moments, including a clean crescentkick to the face set up with a backfist, which you'll catch right at the start).

    • @edwardstanulevich1764
      @edwardstanulevich1764 6 років тому +1

      I've watched them before, and just went back and rewatched parts. Your footwork in the other videos was noticeably better. This is why I was a little surprised about it in this vs Karate video. It didn't seem up to your normal quality. But given what you were trying to do, it makes sense now.
      I hope people notice that you are going out of your way to get outside of your comfort zone. You then film it and post in for all to see. This isn't something most are willing to do, so you should be commended for that. As a fellow kung fu guy, I'd like to say thank you for showing solid applications of traditional techniques!
      Keep up the great work.

      Thanks, I think it is vital to let go of the ego. I meet a lot of skilled martial artists, who are not comforatble showing themselves on UA-cam, because there's so much negativity at times, and there's a lot of keyboard warriors who (as I interpret it) feel the need to put others down to feel better, those tend to be the ones who have no videos or pictures or anything to back up their claims about how badass they are. :) Yes, I am getting out of my comfort zone, also with weapon sparring, for instance there's a video where I use pudao vs a trident... that was scary being against a pointy trident (if you search trident sparring, I'm sure it'll appear as there's pretty no other videos like it, as far as I know), and I also have a yet to be released recording where I spar using the taichi/kung fu fan. I also have sparring videos where I'm keeping things as simple as possible, for instance my 2 vs 1 Self Defense Sparring video I released this summer. :)

    I like seeing that you actively use style throughout the match. That'll stop the crowd that generally says, "I don't see Gung Fu here. I just see kickboxing." And in a real fight, it frustrates the opponent when you style on them.
    Your partner seems to still be finding his rhythm in sparring. Experience will help him find that. The only issue I saw from him was with his sidekicks and roundkicks. The issue isn't flexibility for him. It's his control, which comes down to leg strength. I'd normally assume the pressure is what is causing the issue, but he had the same issue in his prefight embu.
    Practicing his kicks repetitively and doing leg day workouts will fix that.
    Overall good spar.

Which is also why I recently experimented doing a sparring video using the taichi/kung fu fan. I've never ever seen any video with anyone actually sparring with a fan, but I feel it worked out quite well given my lack of actual sparing experience with one... but having sparred against different stylists, used different weapons etc, it becomes easier for me to pull of the stuff I learn in sparring... it used to take longer for me to be able to integrate my skills into sparring, but now it comes more natural, regardless of what techniques. :)

You moved straight back and forth unless you were running out of room. Side stepping and circling will make for more striking opportunities and catch Karate guy off balance, even if just a little. You don't have to retreat when he strikes every time, side step and create a good counter. Nice technique otherwise, nice strikes and kicks! I know this is a few years old but what the heck.

      Exactly, I also feel this one may be my best. I've shared it a lot and done a lot to promote it, as I think it's very entertaining and a unique type of video... hopefully this one reaches a large audience. Yes, Karate is rooted in White Crane Kung Fu, actually my opponent has trained Kyokushin but his black belt is in Okinawan Karate, and he fights more Okinawan and Shotokan like, very much moving in and out, he's difficult to hit and very explosive. But yeah while a lot of the techniques, the kicks especially are similar, you can see how Karate has the philosophy of putting everything into a single attack and Kung Fu is more flowing with combinations. More hard vs soft, though both styles have elements of both, the yin and yang you might say :) Also kinda cool that his gi is white and my kung fu clothes is black, that suits the yin and yang symbolism. Thanks for commenting, that helps this video grow as well, so hopefulyl many can watch it and find entertainment and inspiration from it :)

      Thanks 7dayspking :) I appreciate you being honest and sharing your apperication. It's a good quality to appreciate things, even when you don't fully agree with all of it. Actually, I don't always use this fighting system in sparring. I have more experience sparring with more conventional strikes and a boxing guard, though I like to do a lot of high kicks, unless it's multiple opponent sparring or a self defense scenario. Although I always wear pants allowing me to do high kicks if needed be, it is more tactically sound to go for low kicks, knees, palmstrikes and elbows when it comes to self defense. This saturday I got to record 3 more sparring videos with me vs this guy once, where I used more of a sanda/kickboxing style and where he used JKD (which he's started training, I think sometime this year, I know he's done karate longer but is very passionate about JKD), and two vs the Muay Thai opponent from that previous Kung Fu vs Muay Thai sparring video.... in one of those videos, I used Animal Kung Fu vs his Muay Thai, and it was the most intense Animal Kung Fu sparring video I've done thus far, all the sparring was recorded inside a ring, which meant you could get cornered/try to corner the opponent more :)

      Thanks, I've been told so in DMs on Instagram and sometimes comments here. :) I am not the most technically gifted Kung Fu master by any means, especially some wushu taolu are at such a high level it's breathtaking, but I am much more skilled than when I started out 10 years back, and I think I'm good at applying the techniques under pressure, which is something people need to see can be done with Kung Fu. I am currently editing a style vs style match which I think will be my best one yet, I'm probably gonna add commentary to it... Kung Fu vs Muay Thai inside a boxing ring. :)

      Thanks Skip :) Yeah, I was out of range a lot of the time. I have one other sparring video I've yet to release with this guy, it's where we both fight in more of a kickboxing manner (it's not as good as this session I don't think, but I'll share it eventually), but like in this one I had difficulty getting in and staying in range too... I think his in/out footwork is difficult for me to deal with, it's interesting, cuz when I watch it doesn't look as difficult, but he's very fast. Thanks :) Yeah, although I landed some good shots on the muay thai opponent, I did feel more in a flow state during this one. I think part of it was that during the Kung Fu vs Muay Thai sparring video, I was distracted by the camera man (which I mention in the commentary) and my opponent was also holding back a bit too much, eventhough it's sparring I wanted him to go a bit harder than he did. Actually tomorrow, we're meeting all 3 of us, and we're gonna record (hopefully a lot of) content... one thing for certain is we're gonna do a Kung Fu vs Muay Thai part 2 sparring video. :)

    Hi Michael,
    This is your best sparring session. The sparring session like this prepares for real life situation. I once suggested you about more realistic sparring in one of your videos and this is what I meant. In Assam our light sparring sessions are like this...some highlights from my side -
    1. Karate guys low side kicks to your abs.
    2. Karate guys low side kicks to block your kicks.
    3. Kung Fu tiger claw and another I think it was a leopard claw that was awesome.
    4. Kung Fu Inward Kick
    5. Kung Fu Side kick
    6. Kung Fu front kick which missed but would have hurt.
    Snake fist hurts if you miss the target. Please continue to practice and do the good work. All the best!

    • @ZenDragonYoutubeChannel
      @ZenDragonYoutubeChannel  6 років тому +1

      Thanks Promothash :) I'll always mix it up with sparring, sometimes lighter sometimes harder, depends on what the opponent wants as well and if we're using weapons, protective gear, etc... it's always good, but I agree, this is one of my best yet sparring videos I think. "2. Karate guys low side kicks to block your kicks." That one really hurt, cuz he stopped my kick with it so it was double impact, I kept fighting luckily it was near the end, but I felt almost numb in the leg and it took 2-3 days for my leg to recover fully. But at the same time I knew it was nothing serious, but definitely felt that one.
      3."Kung Fu tiger claw and another I think it was a leopard claw that was awesome." You mean the jumping spinning tiger claw strike? All the way thru I only used Tiger Claw and Snakefist. I want to do Eagle Claw and Cranefist also at some point, but with those gloves which allow for harder contact, I can only form a snake fist and tiger claw, I can't connect the fingers for crane or simply bend 3 fingers for eagle claw. :)

      Most of my sparring is done in martial arts classes where i can't record (earlier it was Kung Fu, since April it's been Krav Maga, with very chaotic sparring with added stress factors), but I've networked and connected with martial artists for a long time. Some of those are willing to meet up and spar and some of them are willing to have it recorded as well... all in all, I've sparred with quite a few different stylists/body shapes/etc on this channel but it's a fraction of what I have in real life, and if you see the same faces in many of the sparring videos, it's cuz they're the ones interested in meeting up to spar and have it recorded :) This gym is actually a fitness gym where there's a room that's sort of out of the way, many times I've sparred in parks and recently I got the chance to record some sparring at a gym with a boxing ring. :)

Yeah, we'd set a timer, but it wasn't turned on properly, I think we both did well keeping up the level of intensity for 6 minutes, especially considering our styles where we expended lots of energy throwing high kicks. We would have been more tired if it had went to the ground though, at one point it might have, when he got me in a headlock but I managed to counter it... interesting for me to watch that counter, as it's 80% similar to a reaction practised in Krav Maga, otherwise it was all Kung Fu with snakefist, tiger claw and the kicks and stances, but I think that headlock sceneario triggered my more self defense focused training (as opposed to the duel,/combat sport type of situation, where it's more facing the attacker head on trading combinations)

      @ZenDragonYoutubeChannel  6 років тому

      Thanks Shawn :) There's a specific reason why I've recently done Snake fist and Tiger Claw when sparring with animal style Kung Fu, and that is because I can't form a crane fist like you mentioned, or an eagle claw (which is something I've also trained and would like to use), as long as it's with those MMA gloves. They work well for tiger claw and snake fist however.... that said, those two animal styles kinda flow together with one being more elusive and aimed at soft spots (the snakefist) and the other being more agresssive. Defensively I "pary" more with snake and "block" more with tiger. Have you seen the other similar Tiger/Snake Kung Fu vs other styles videos on this channel? I have one vs Muay Thai, one vs JKD and, one vs Wing Chun, come to think of it I have one without gloves against a capoeira opponent... in that one I use tiger, snake, eagle claw (maybe cranefist as well, don't remember), but it's lighter contact. :)

My opponent here and the opponent from the Kugn Fu vs Muay Thai video are super passionate about martial arts and have that same mindset when it comes to sparring, so I'm very happy to be able to train and record with them :) Btw I stuck in snakefist and tiger claw throughout the full fight, as mentioned during the talking portion, the snake is well suited for soft spots and the tiger claw better for harder points of the body, so they go well together (and I can't do cranefist or eagle claw with those gloves on), and yeah, it's easier for me to fight using a more kickboxing like type of guard and footwork, but I learn a lot from this type of sparring and it's something missing online that can open people's eyes to these techniques being possible to implement in sparring.

      👊Muay Thai and Jujitsu guys spend more of their time sparring than Kung Fu students tend to, at least if you mean Brazilian JiuJitsu, the Japanese original form is trained with less emphasis on free sparring, for the most part. I actually have a video where I spar with a Muay Thai guy and use animal style Kung Fu (which is harder for me to apply than a more sanda/kickboxing like style)... It's a good watch I recommend watching it, the video is called "MUAY THAI vs KUNG FU (Real Sparring)", but my opponent didn't put in his best performance and wasn't going as hard as he could have... and I was distracted by the camera guy a few times, but it's still a good example of Kung Fu under pressure, I land a spinning crescent kick and also a backfist in the sparring. We'll do a part 2 sometime, which is likely to be better, with him going harder. :)

      I know that combination tends to be very effective, both because of the techniques, and the way those styles are typically trained. It's like with Muay Thai vs Muay Boran (the martial art upon which the combat SPORT of Muay Thai was based). Muay Boran has a more complete system of techniques including ones too lethal for Muay Thai and combat sports in general. However, not knowing anything about my opponent, I'd rather fight a Muay Boran than Muay Thai trained guy, if it's a life or death situation... cuz the Muay Boran guy has to hold back more in training and do a lot of the techniques in the air or extra carefully, and is less likely to have as much or intense sparring experience. Same with Kung Fu a lot of people who train Kung Fu never even spar like this, let alone even harder.

I’m not sure what Snake or Tiger use within there systems? But maybe raising your guard and Knee shield would guard you against those mid section kicks. You were taking a lot of them because you were moving straight back every time he came forward. Kung use more angles of attacks and defense. Karate is very direct and linear. • @ZenDragonYoutubeChannel
      @ZenDragonYoutubeChannel  6 років тому +1

      Thanks J.E.M. I am actually more experienced sparring in a more kickboxing like manner with fancier kicks, kinda sanda like. At the place where I trained Kung Fu for nearly a decade, we did sparring (unlike some traadtional schools), but it was kinda devided where we'd do more contact sparring with gloves and move more kickboxing like, and then spar with the animal techniques very slowly and carefully in a more cooperative manner (with certain things it made sense to be more careful, as a lot of the animal style techniques were strikes for the throat and such, and the lesser degree of resitance and intensity, also allowed one to pull off the more complex movement patterns)... But having done both forms of sparring (as well as weapon sparring, multiple oppponent sparring, etc), I've developed the instincts to test the techniques under more pressure. I'm still more used to sparring with closed fists and more boxing like footwork. So I'm actually better at creating angles in sparring when I utilise a more kickboxing/sanda like style. As for the guard/knee blcok, that's not used in the Kung Fu styles I am aware of, it's a good way of blocking done in Muay Thai, and even in Krav Maga which I train now we were shown that as technique... like pretty much any style and technique, it also has disadvantages though, one being that you can feint a kick and then sweep or move in with pressure to put the opponent to the ground when he's standing on one leg. :)

Yeah, he's a Karateka who since started training JKD (around the time of this video) and now instucts a style he taches alongside another martial arts friend of mine, a style with the JKD mentality of finding one's own style and absorbing what's useful, but where they deviate from some of the mechanics associated with JKD.Anyways, in this one he used Karate, I think because of the distance there were no reverse punches.

However I still solo train Kung Fu and pressure test it when recording sparring videos for this channel.. Oh yeah and if you have not heard of Meishu before, I'm not surprised it's a semi traditional style in the sense that my sifu developed it in the 80's having trained Shaolin and other martial arts, I liked the way it was trained with sparring (no weapon sparring like I have on this channel though, weapons were only practised for forms, so that's something I've trained on my own). • @ZenDragonYoutubeChannel
      @ZenDragonYoutubeChannel  6 років тому +1

      Thanks, Kung Fu isn't the easiest style to learn or pull off. Karate is rooted in White Crane Kung Fu and thus has many of the same techniques, but is more direct and less focused on feints and flowing from one move to the next, there's also generally fewer techniques in Karate styles compared to Kung Fu styles, which is both an advantage/disadvantage, as there's more emphasis on each technique. Kind of a game of yin and yang, Kung Fu is softer Karate harder, but both have elements of softness/hardness (like the yin has a bit of yang in it and vice versa). Yeah, I don't always stick to a specific style, my way is typically with more of a boxing guard using conventional punches to set up my Kung Fu kicks, but I learn a lot from sticking to one style and testing it against another, I have a whole playlist of these Style vs Style sparring videos (where I use animal Kung Fu vs Capoeira/JKD/Muay Thai/Wing Chun, etc... I also added a Jian vs Dao weapon sparring video to the playlist, as the 2 Kung Fu swords are very different in style).

      I'll check it out. I always loved the aesthetics of eastern martial arts and personally think that the modern overemphasis on effectiveness can be detrimental to special martial arts in the long run. Sure, a properly executed muay thai low kick, or a nice wrestling takedown is a crucial thing to know, if you want to be efficient (IMHO), but watching two judoka demonstrating the techniques with less resistance that would occur during a real fight can be very enlightening too (for example here: ua-cam.com/video/3NoYAaDUC5Y/v-deo.html).

    • @ZenDragonYoutubeChannel
      @ZenDragonYoutubeChannel  6 років тому

      Those are some very nice throws :) Judo has actually been quite effective in MMA, though it's still rarely used compared to greco roman wrestling and catch wrestling, and that is exactly why it's so effective, as it's less predictable in the context of MMA. It's crucial to know some purely practical techniques, but yeah I too love the creativity of martial arts. MARTIAL mixed with ART. :)

    0:13 - 0:28 is like video game start 😂 I wish all Kung fu, wing chun, aikido practitioners would do full contact sparring, almost all of them claim they have very deadly techiques although they never tested it in a real fight

      Nice that you found this video, I generally tend to focus on 3 aspects in my content (with overlaping elements), martial arts, combat sports and self defense. This sparring video we connected pretty hard when we did connect (although still with some control for safety), but my mindset was more to flow creatively and showcase many different animal style techniques and kicks... this video ua-cam.com/video/xMtgOolp4FU/v-deo.html is still martial ARTS focused, but I am more intent on landing and we go full contact...Here's a more self defense focused video ua-cam.com/video/kseOzBttIdE/v-deo.html I also have a few amateur fights and will be having an amateur MMA exhibition vs another UA-camr on June the 6th :) Hope you subscribe and enjoy the content you come across :)

    Nice combat and applications, your Kung-Fu seems natural to you. Just a sparring tip, try to do a bit more contact, at least a "tap" when you try to hit your opponent, you do not need to hurt him, but just to make sure the contact (tap) has been made, also don't be afraid to get closer for it (hand techniques). For last, try to block mid/low kicks using your legs too, like when you lift it when you punch in some moments.
    Anyway, nice fight, one of the best sparrings of Kung-Fu (Hung Gar, i believe) i have ever seen.

      Thank you Pedro. I have since reorded an Animal Style Kung Fu vs Sanda sparring match in a ring, where I conencted more and didn't have to hold back with snakestrikes as he was wearing protective goggles, this video ua-cam.com/video/LZJ3moTRYYg/v-deo.html shows some clips from that and a lot more!

    If someone of them had done a sweep kick he would've won at once!
