    In this cancer documentary, NowThis News tackles the important issue of environmental injustice. Factors in our environment might lead to cancer. Louisiana residents in 'cancer alley' discovered this first hand. They're feeling the effects of environmental racism and the illness brought on by living in cancer alley. Mississippi River factories, the Petrol corridor specifically, might have made them sick. This cancer alley documentary explains how residents feel about it all.

      That's what happens when people vote for those who are in favor of DEREGULATIONS, which allow corporations to run wild and compromise our health, by releasing toxins in our air and water. Republican party does the bidding for the corporations that don't want regulations. Trump lifted most rules and laws of EPA.

      Things will get worse , as long as Louisiana keeps on voting for Republicans. Not saying Democrats are perfect, but Republicans are 1000 times worse. Republicans are against regulations. Trump removed all the rules and laws that protect our environment. This allowed those factories and corporations to release toxins in our air and water.

    On top of this, this area currently has some of the highest coronavirus death rates in the country. My heart goes out to these people. Economic policy is health policy. Our systems are so broken.

    My aunt, who lived in Galliano, LA, passed from cancer a few years ago. It went undetected until it was too late. My grandmother who lives on the gulf in Alabama also had cancer. The treatments made her incredibly sick to the point she had to stop but miraculously went into remission

    The same goes for Northern Alberta for their oilsands. I live in the Northern Hemisphere of the downstream affects of this dirty money. Many may argue the fact that it may not cause cancer but the numbers show that there are health complications. Money is dirty and evil.

    Old money and politics blocking needed change. Our whole synthetic chemical industry needs to change to biocompatible compounds based on what nature makes, or else we forever run deadly risks every step of the way. I've worked in plants that stunk from hot plastics and paints, I can only imagine living right next to where those chemicals are made! Change is in the air..

      it's also listed on the USGS 1962 map as a cemetery. many black cemeteries on this map are not officially recognized as cemeteries by the USA, if a Plant wants to build on top of them. it's a problem. this one was lucky, the "Bishop's Cemetery" listed in 1962 is also surrounded by the Marathon Refinery--there isn't even a public road to see that one.

    I think diet and obesity also need to be factored in to the equation as well. It makes the case studies weaker when those two are not eliminated as statistical biases. It's not so much of an issue of race as an issue of socio-economics. Release of a sulfur compound that causes acute health effects (respiratory) won't give people cancer. What leads to cancer is long-term exposure to the organic vapors coming off the surface of petrochemicals. This is a good video, but if you want to make a strong case, you MUST have the health related data. You first need to force government to release that information annually. Without that information, you can't go to the next step - which is enforcement. You can't beat big businesses directly. Need to make a video that shows the actual data and statistical studies that show significantly higher rates in that community. - Environmental Toxicologist

    • @Tombee2
      @Tombee2 5 років тому +2

      It's actually very clear the factories are causing the problem and you can easily just shut them down. They're literally making peoples skin burn and they have the data they're just hiding it. The problem isn't big business anyway it's a problem with capatalism in general. Money > human beings. If the government gave 2 shits about it's citizens they'd have these factories tightly regulated at the cost of an abundance amount of money

      Thanks for repeating a politically correct myth. there is currently a struggle to collect cancer statistics, which are hidden at the state level. even if that were true, there's also discrimination against black people in what is left of Louisiana's health care system. Deaths from Cancer are highest in Cancer Alley. have you been to Prevost hospital?

    Seems like a diverse community. I don't see anything with racism. Socioeconomic disparity yes, but not racism. Throwing a title of racism in the title is irresponsible reporting because there is nothing showing racism. Just a huge amount of injustice and pocket lining on both sides of the political isle. Both the reds and the blues are to blame here because this happened on the watch of both parties. Not just one.

    • @Tombee2
      @Tombee2 5 років тому +9

      It could be both socioeconomic and racist at the same time the fact that they're a mixed community means they're not all white. Which makes exploitation easier.
