U.S. exports of used clothing creating waste nightmare

- Over one and half billion pounds of used clothing are exported from America each year and some of it ends up in Ghana. CBS Foriegn Correspondent Debora Patta follows that clothing to Accra's Kantamanto Market where much is upcycled and resold, but as more clothing arrives than the country can handle, Patta sees how an estimated 40% ends up rotting in landfills creating an environmental disaster.

Yeah I think they aren't thinking of average people. Most of my t-shirts are 3-5 years old. I wear them monthly if not more often.

The only things I buy new are underwear and bras. I always buy second hand, wear them until they're worn out and cut them up for rags at that point. I HATE waste!!

There are services which will tatter up your shirts & jeans for a fee. & they sell clothing in that condition too.
clothes is the only thing I don't buy second hand, but I rarely toss them away. Normally I wear them til the end of life. When they are torn I save them for rags for house cleaning. I do donate only my nice good quality clothes that no longer fit. Things like in-house slippers are typically worn 15+ years. Being frugal is a good virtue.

Uh oh wait till you hear how awful sending our recycling to poor countries is. Spoiler alert, it's bad. Why do you think China stopped taking it. It was making the workers very sick and well they don't care about workers but they do care when footing the hospital bills. Omg I probably shouldn't even mention the batteries for electric cars. Well all that material comes from Africa. Yep you guessed it massive death and destruction to retrieve that stuff to make the batteries.
@Chill Will well real leftists know that life is hard in parts of America and even harder in other countries. Real leftists understand we need global solidarity with the working class around the world, and NOT turn a blind eye to these problems. I try and keep clothes I've bought for at least a year, unless they've worn out like socks or underwear. We need to mend what we wear otherwise.
These poor people are making money with the things we give them. No, it's not a glamor job... but if they had better options available to them, they would take those options. Before you take away someone's livelihood and force them into even worse stations, please reconsider.

A lot we not told when we try donate till news get word of it then we find out how much is really given to anyone close to home and how rest is sent away for any reason .
It used to occur more in Asia (more so with plastic). Then they started refusing it for the same reason. Actually even in America charitable organizations are begging people to donate ONLY usable clothing. They're also getting so much junk it's costing them as they have to pay to dispose it.

What an eye opening report. I usually buy second hand clothes. What a shame that the United States is so wasteful. We all need to stop destroying our planet and resources.

@@maryinnes8473 The ordinary citizens get blamed for things we don't even know is happening. It's these companies that look for cheap and/or profitable ways of doing business and dealing with waste that messes us to tenfold but we get blamed for it.
I wouldn't say wasteful but anything and everything has a purpose to be recycled and modified. Those persons that disgusted their worn out clothing candy be processed into a better item. Governments must look at industries for recycling and modifications
99% of my clothes are second- or third-hand.
I still wear clothes I’ve had for the last 10+ years. The ones that have holes in them get turned into rags
i got a mix of second hand and store gots from past trips so once it woren out or cant wear then tossed it goes unless try donate for any reason and u hope it goes to those who need it anytime. to see top of people wearing mask i guess makers made too many so try donate so anyone can wear and take a loss i guess.

Used clothing should be free, readily available and even distributed among the people of the country they came from, first.
We have a free thrift store in Oakhurst CA. People can shop once every 30 days. Pillows and bedding can be gotten every 60 days. Plus food boxes and pet food every 60 days.

Good point. We donate with good intentions, but they turn around and sell our donations. We do have to conduct research in our own community to make sure our donated items are given to those in need, not sold for profit.

You think this is bad? You should watch the documentaries about where all of the plastic that is "recycled" goes.
It’s the same situation with all our recycling products we send over across seas as well. The US just needs to stop sending in their trash around the world and deal with it in its own, show their people to not be wasteful and recycle they’re own plastics and unwanted clothes

I saw those waste dumps when I was in Ghana a few years ago and I was appalled! That is why I have since reduced my consumption and now give clothes directly to people I know will use them. I even pay money to ship it to friends and family wherever they are. It's more expensive for me to do that, but it's better than donating it so it. Donating simply removes it from our spaces, but becomes someone else's problem.
So, we all need to do our part by reducing consumption, buying second hand (and only when needed), and giving directly to those who use them.

India and Bangladesh. You should come visit the cities in India. The dyeing units/textile manufacturing companies here are corrupt as the brands itself and pollute the water bodies and the natural ecosystem here. Tirupur is a textile hub that is near the western ghats and has ruined the natural ecosystem due to these corrupt dyeing industries that supply the goods to the customer brands across the Atlantic. India and Ghana should sue US government and the fashion brands For pollution, natural ecosystem degradation, biodiversity loss and the associated loss of quality of life.

@@kavinanil7406 It's not just the US importing the goods that ruin the ecosystem. It's countries around the world. But also, the Indian government has sold it's ecosystem to polluters for profit. That's not right. They can choose to not export or manufacture those items. That's probably the best idea.
I buy second hand...and when I don't, I typically end up keeping those items for years upon years. I have sweaters and jeans in my closet that are over 10years old. Others, I give to my daughter or my niece who then keep them for a few more years after that!! Cloths are expensive man. I couldn't imagine buying a $20 shirt just to wear it once or twice and then throw it away, I couldn't even do that with a $5 dollar shirt!! What a waste.

I wear a pair of jeans very frequently that are over 30 years old. I bought them at Salvation Army

I got so much from different sources that i wear and tear clothes till can wear no more for any reason then just toss but otehr stuff not see wear again for any reason u try donate and hope it goes to anyone who need clothes. some stuff wish still had but was any reason to get rid of at time. but now i do try wear and tear any i got or by chance give as gift maybe later if peeps like what i try give at time. but i got plenty i not gotta get any any more for years unless reason to buy stuff at time.
It's the people who act as if spending $20 is a lot let alone $5 that expose themselves for being the EXACT kind of people that take part in this fast fashion baloney. Otherwise, you would've realized how ridiculous you sound saying you hurt to buy $5 and even $20 shirts. All clothes these days are worth more than $20 especially VINTAGE/Second hand. So it goes to show you actually have 0 idea what you're talking about, you do not ever buy "secondhand" and you are probably one of the main offenders of this "fast fashion" debacle. I actually buy secondhand clothes that have been around for years, and let me tell you they are EXPENSIVE, because they're QUALITY you idiot. They last YEARS because they are GOOD QUALITY, therefore people will charge more, simple logic. Except for the fact that you've never bought a single secondhand item in your life, so you wouldn't even know something as basic as that. Good question, I would like to know that answer.
I've watched several documentaries on this. In one instance they interviewed charity organizations in Germany and France and the people in charge both said they are overwhelmed with donations so much that they don't have space for them. Added to this is the lack manpower to sort and redistribute these clothes. One lady even said, it would be better if people just gave money instead of the clothing. At the end of the day, the charity organizations are forced to sell the clothes in order to stop paying for storage. Unfortunately, these days with fast fashion, these organizations make more money selling your clothing donations than they do from other means such that they are not willing to solve the problem that makes them money.

@@fishglowinthedark5769 basically, yes. In my county, a trip to the waste management facility costs you a minimum of $20. But, the local salvation army, goodwill or others are free. Most of the stuff should just go to the incinerator.

Every time I take a trip home to Thailand I bring suitcases full of clothes that I wear and then donate at the end of my trip. It clears up space in my suitcase for souvenirs! Win, win!
You're resourceful like me. I used to take regular trips to South America. I would pack clothes/footwear from items I might be ready to get rid of, or I'd buy second hand for the trip and if during the trip someone complimented me on a piece or if I could see that they needed clothing for themselves or family, I would ask if they wanted the item. I was never turned down. The other wisdom of buying thrift store clothes for an international trip - if your luggage gets "lost" or stolen, you are not out the cost of your favorite or expensive pieces. Then as you said, more room for souvenirs. Sometimes if I took two suitcases, I'd make sure that one was smaller than the other so I could pack one inside the other, saving on baggage fees upon my return. Also, I started buying used suitcases from thrift shops. I could then also donate my suitcase as often there are not good quality luggage where I used to travel. Peace!
Mean while I still have some cloths for the 80's. I buy expensive this way I know it will last.

Please stop pointing fingers at the rich. Wealthy people don't waste their money, that's why they are wealthy. These celebrities often receive the clothing for free to promote it, have it on loan or they rent outfits. Most of the clothing shipped to Ghana are the result of everyday peoples' poor fashion choices and spending decisions. Idiots buy message graphic t-shirts, realize they look like an idiot for wearing it, then toss it.

You can clearly see that it is mostly cheap unfashionable stuff and not rich peoples' clothing. I defend wealthy people because I know a few and know that they pay a lot of their income in taxes. They pay the majority of the taxes to keep the country running and so do corporations. Most peoples' jobs are the result of someone wealthy. Companies will continue to produce the cheap garbage as long as there are buyers.

The governments want to tax the rich not to help people but to fund their wars and launder the money to themselves. Fast fashion is trash fashion. You don't even need as good a reason as this to not support the industry. I have a small wardrobe and wear things till they no longer fit or start developing holes. I also try to avoid plastic clothes (nylon, polyester, etc.) in favor of wool, linen, cotton, silk, leather, etc.
You can still fix the holes. You can embroidery over it or do patch work. Even after that, you can repurpose it. Any clothing item I buy only retires taking many roles and finally becomes a cleaning rag
I’ve started to make my own clothes (my pandemic hobby). I make everything with natural fibres and it’s much easier to find out the provenance of whole fabrics than clothes (so you can get more info on origin, manufacturing processes and dyes). I get the exact style and fit I want in the exact colour I want, and since I’m responsible for quality, I make my stuff durable. And it’s kind of self-limiting. A garment can take several hours to pattern, cut, and sew so I can’t exactly go on a spree. Obviously not everyone has the resources to make their own clothes (although I picked up my sewing machine for less than £100, I realise that is way too expensive for a lot of people), but a lot more could be doing it themselves, or buying custom clothes on say Etsy, which is full of independent makers (obviously more expensive than going to a shop but then you end up with something made to your measurements that actually fits). Buying secondhand is obviously also good, but is not for everyone as the size selection usually isn’t inclusive (whenever I’ve tried to thrift clothes I usually walk away empty handed in frustration).
So if they don't need the excess of clothing, why are we sending it there? That makes zero sense but makes perfect sense on how our government runs. I wonder if it's 3rd or 4th party sellers involved.
This is NOT government sponsored. These are 3rd party resellers, to pay for the shipping costs. After several levels of reselling, the original intent is lost, and it becomes another business....
It’s a long standing model. In ‘the west’ we purchase twice as much clothing as a decade ago (per person, so this has nothing to do with population increases), and it tends to be much lower quality because of fast fashion. The markets in Ghana (and other places) for decades have purchased bundles of used clothing and then resell it locally. It used to be win-win as there was far less waste, a better product, and more profit. Now it is clearly becoming an untenable model.
🤭 oh my goodness, how sad 😔 is this. This is just heartbreaking 💔. I’m glad they are bringing this to light so we can do better and help our planet.
If you think this is bad, then watch videos of what happens to all the cheap crap that doesn't sell in cheap crap stores. Tons of new cheap crap goes straight to landfills.
That clothing waste also comes from companies who use the donation system as a free waste service for back stock.

Likewise! Just wear them when you stay at home! Keep your nice clothes nice by changing when you get home from your nicest clothes into your ones that are on the way out, and try to stick with natural fabrics that can degrade naturally instead of causing those fumes.
@@geekdivaherself That's what I do! As soon as I get home I change into my home clothes, they're full of holes and I've worn them at least for 5 yrs and longer. I look terrible but they're so comfortable.

Oh, Paolo... where do you think American recycled materials end up? Yup, you guessed it! Africa! They've already had to create ways to reuse that junk in very ingenious ways. Americans are terribly misinformed about recycling-- very misled.
Denim is recycled into insulation. Lots of stores will take your old jeans and give you a coupon and free to ship through zapos if you dont live near one of those drop-off locations.
I hardly ever buy new clothes, shopping for them is too much of a hassle and I would rather have quality clothes last years upon years, than these garbage fast fashion garments that fall apart in a month

This news report fails to tell us what companies are shipping these clothes to Ghana. Poor reporting.
That’s what I thought. If America is doing this like they say we think we are donating and helping these people and they are tossing them on the beach makes zero sense.

Same here. I have a walk in closet and wore very classic pieces when I was in college from Banana Republic and Nordstrom. I lost weight during the pandemic and now can fit into my old clothes. I’ve started using them again even though they are 10 years old. I’m thinking of cutting back on shopping for clothes new and used so I can just use what I already have.

I still had clothing from 15 years ago and even kept things from my parents from the 80's that are still in my closet.
If clothes were made out of durable fabric for a reasonable price, people would keep them longer, but now everything is see-through and thin. I got a skirt I'm considering replacing because it melted when i tried to iron it. I had no idea it was plastic. 😔

Sometimes high price doesn't equate to good quality. In the place where I went to college, we used to get all the clothing by window shopping and they would sell clothes with some minor imperfections from manufacturing for a much lower price. It's almost 10 years and I still use most of them
I buy clothes that are made using quality materials, so they could last for years even if i use them often. I maybe paying more, but at least I know that I am helping to prevent an environmental catastrophe like this one.
I dont use the same short 7 times and get rid of it. I finally get rid of it when its no good and has holes. I reuse my cloth as much as possible. I probably shop for cloths once or twice an year at most (Unless I need some for a certain scenario).
One big thing that's missing in this equation is China producing the fast fashion and the companies themselves selling them. My tiktok is full of advertisments from Shein and they are major fast fashion company.

Just send it where we don't have to look at it. H&M was a recycling place for old clothing ( they stopped during covid and haven't started up again) and I always wonder where that stuff ends up. WE feel good, think we are doing good, and in the end, it's a disaster. I am still wearing clothes I've had for 30 years.

I use my old clothes to make blanket. Just as our fathers and mothers did. They didn't waste things. My grandmother used old cloths for blanket coats, rugs,, etc....its a great saving to make things yourself.
I feel that thrift stores also have a responsibility on recycling of clothes too. It is repulsive to see. I am sure it will be a matter of time before the clothes will be dumped in the ocean or space. Ugh.

Full of crap. We’ve been helping other countries since I was growing up in the 60’s. We send billions of dollars annually to assist other countries. This news story mskes mo sense at all. We donate the clothes in America. Who is sending them to Ghana and if they are free to the people of Ghana why aren’t they using them? And if they don’t want them why is their government accepting them. All valid questions.

It was corduroy and denim, and embroidery. Now clothes are so thin you can rip the seams apart with your hands, and nothing is embroidered, on mass produced clothing that is. Anything printed instead of embroidered washes away, and the item may lose its style or use (such as for labeling).

This reminds me of that old Yankee rhyme (it was attributed to the flinty New Englanders of yore): "Use it up, wear it out. If you can't make do, then do without." As a kid, we always had hand-me-downs and even as an adult, I buy good-quality, well-made clothing and take care of it, too. But, I wear it until it can't be worn anymore and only then buy the things that I need. Those images from Ghana are pretty revolting - something I was completely unaware of. My parents were like those old Yankees, they were both immigrants and grew up in hard-scrabble times. Their frugality caused my siblings and me some resentment at times, but I now think the example they gave us about these things (materialism) was a good one.

The guy at the end says it is hard to fix. It is called waste to energy plants to burn the materials to make energy. Reduce landfill and get the methance out before it decomposes in the landfill. Our trash will always be with us, so burn it instead of fossil fuels.
The US needs to have more flea markets or places where people can buy those second hand clothes. I'm seeing so many brand name perfectly fine clothes. I can't afford those retail price, but I bet I could afford them once they're priced down and sold second hand. We have to stop the insane overproduction, but I think another facet to the current problem is better distribution and accessibility. I think there's many people right here in our country who could use/want those clothes but I feel like a lot of those dumped clothes go straight from retail consumer to "donations" that are shipped overseas.
"Bend down boutique" is another term because you literally bend down to get the clothes you need .

I don't buy a lot of clothes. What I do buy is mostly band tshirts and I wear them until they fall apart. I get most everything else except socks and underwear 2nd hand either from the thrift store or from yard sales.
People should be more selective about what they donate. If it's torn or stained, throw it away instead of donating to thrift stores that will in turn be sent to Africa and end up in their landfill because it ended up in a bundle and they couldn't sell it.
If I have an item that gets stained or torn, I turn it into a cleaning rag if it is cotton. I also cut off the buttons or anything decorative on the item so it can be used in a craft or art project.

I take extremely good care of them till they're just plain worn out.
Then I recycle them when possible.
When my Mom was Alive I'd give them to her for quilting material.
She made me a cowboy style duster coat one year with built in chap snaps on the bottom half for riding on my Harley.
She made it from recycled jeans and made one for my two older brothers also.
I still have it.
Lots of inside pocket and a Velcro closed covered slit on each side to access my jeans pockets when it's zipped and buttoned up so I don't have to open it to get items outta my pockets.
Stop giving clothing to second hand stores and just throw them away if they're going to wind up in other countries polluting their land and waters. It's all connected. Sad thing is, I thought donation booths were doing great things with the used items and that clothes outgrown or just gently used were making it into the hands of people who needed them most. What a sham!
A lot of people in the USA need to wear their cloths longer. Fashion industry needs to slow down. Too many take too much for granted. The world needs to stop or reduce excepting our trash. Maybe then things will start changing here…

It's perfectly acceptable to wear your favorite shirt as many times as you want and don't make any mistake, anyone shaming another cause they wear the same thing should be ashamed.
Sad thing is as companies which sell quality clothing such as Macy's and JC Penny's go by the wayside, garbage clothing that wears out quickly increases.
