The genius of this show is how David shows similar qualities as his mother. His use of "write off" without actually knowing what it means reminds me of Moira telling him to just "fold it in." The apple doesn't fall too far.
@@jg4840 no because Kramer actually understood the concept (in that knowing it is a common practice in large corporations), he just couldn't describe its financial implications. David doesn't understand the concept at all and that's what makes this funnier.

@@InvokedAlbazyes as a business supply expense..but youre literally talking pennies. You spend what $10 on folders...even at a high 10% tax rate, that $10 in folders will give you a $1.00 tax credit return. And again 10% is high and i bet the tax return on supplies is less than 6% But when you take all your expensesand write them off they can add up. Lets say between folders, papers, printer ink, envelopes, you may have maybe a few hundred dollars a year in supplies to write off, if youre a small business. If youre shipping alot then postage and packaging can add up alot. One year i had $1500 in postage alone to write off. Then add any software and hardware/equipment youve bought. Basically one year I made $29k in sales, had $14k in expenses to write off, so i got about $1,000 tax reduction credit. So before my expenses write off i needed to pay in $2800 in taxes. After i included the write offs i only needed to pay in about $1800 in taxes.
@@GCEXTREMEMN One cool way to write things off is that if you work from home, you can make 1/4 of your house or apt an expense and write it off - 1/4 of your rent, heat, etc.
I remember watching this episode for the first time, and the moment that David Rose asked, "OK, well, then why isn't it called a 'tax write-off'?", I said, "It is," out loud in front of the TV right before Johnny Rose said it.
This was always such a big part of Eugene Levy’s comedic brilliance. Trying to actually teach something to an immature or uneducated person, while visibly losing his mind at the same time over their behavior.
After recently watching people not understanding how tariffs work reminded me of this great scene of Eugene trying to explain to David what write offs are. Only difference is, these two are actually smart and hilarious.
People don't realize that a write off just lowers your taxable income because it was an expense before profit. Basically, if you earned $100k from your business, but you needed to spend $30k in expenses to earn that $100k, your net profit is $70k. That 30k was expenses that you can claim lowered your net profit and thus, you won't pay taxes on that 30k of revenue.
I've had that conversation with people. There are people who actually think that a write off is when you literally just make something so it didn't exist. It's amazing how little people understand about business or economics.
As a graduate of Oregon public education I did not know what a write off was until I saw this clip. All financial classes at my high school were optional electives, and I never ended up taking them due to other elective commitments. It should be mandatory but I believe that the public education system leaves us without such knowledge so we can remain corporate worker bees struggling in minimum wage… maybe I’m just a conspiracy nut but too often I see young adults failing due to a lack of common knowledge not being taught in schools, where they then get stuck in poverty or lower middle class because they never knew what steps to take or the potential they had. So many of my classmates from my year have no concept of savings, interest, investments, etc. I myself lack in many areas but I’m working to try and educate myself so I can live comfortably, so I thank Shitts Creek for telling me what a write off it lol
Just in case, what you are doing with a write off is basically voiding a line item so you don't pay taxes or fees on it. In a hotel, you might write off a room night because the guy did a charge back on the credit card. You didn't get paid, so you don't want to pay franchise fees and hotel tax. But you still lost the money. You paid for the electricity and water and cleaning in the room. You write off a $100 room night and it saves you probably $30. At the end of the year.
I swear I was having this conversation with my sister few months back. She started a business and took small loan from my parents. Then started to go shopping spree. She even though about getting range rover with small down payment. I asked how are you planning to pay it. She said it’s write off part of the business. Mind you she haven’t even sold a single thing in the business. Ultimately I took over and I’m recovering most of the losses.

You can't just buy random stuff for your house and write it off on your taxes claiming it's a business expense... it has to be used for certain things and writing it off doesn't mean you get the full amount back from the purchase just a portion to go toward taxes spent on the item and only the portion that was specifically used for the business (sometimes items like phones or cars for example can be used for personal and business use so it needs to be split to account for each use) it's funny because he thinks he's so right and his dad's like huh? 😂
no he couldn't because he is an employee, not a business. if work pays, that's their expense, not his; if he gets benefits from his employer that's income not a deductible expense
