The memory of that concert vividly comes back to me every time I hear this last trio. He was alone sitting on a bar stool during a break. I saw how puffy his hands were and pretty big guy he was, less 3 or 4 feet away... I still regret that I did not have a courage to introduce myself and at least thank him for all the beautiful music... I hope I can meet him in heaven or hell some day... or somewhere in between...xxx
I had a great fotune to hear Bill Evans a week or so before he passed away at Fat Tuesday's or Blue Note in early September of 1980. (can't remember which one now) I sat for two sessions for the first night, went back for the last day. Of course, he was announced to be out of commission, substituted by a young apprentice... with Marc Johnson and Joe Labarbera. It took almost 2 or 3 months for Bill's passing to my knowledge.
Check out the drummer's gear!!! So awesomely cool!!! A 4 piece with hats, crash and ride!!! WOOT!!! Finally someone prepared to play an instrument rather than a musical accessory!!!! Thumbs up for the kit, let alone this being so awesome with Bill Evans!!! Me so happy to see this! :))
Jazz legend Bill Evans, R.I.P. Jazz piano pros and students try to emulate your style and dazzling chops. I have a long, long way to go, if ever, even come close...
Bill is awesome, that goes without saying, but DAMN that was some silky smooth drumming there. i was thoroughly entertained and a little surprised that Bill stepped out of his usual introspective stuff into some more high energy, upbeat pieces.
Keep listening, it will be worth it, I promise! Bill Evans' music is very rewarding and has different moods on many recordings. Listen to his early records, he swung in a more obvious way as he was very influenced by Bud Powell, Horace Silver and Red Garland (people you might want to investigate as well)......Good luck discovering more music!
the waltz for debby version is one of my all time favorite jazz performances. this one is waaaay different (did paul motian ever take solos with bill?), but it's still awesome.
Really awesome performance and Interpretation Can anyone send me a link of a video where there is a Vocalist singing this song in like a med. swing tempo? Thankss
@toyotayaruno There's a (completely legal, they pay the copyright holders) free lead sheet on wikifonia . If you want an actual transcription of Bill's playing, check out Pascal Wetzel's book of Evans transcriptions, you'll find it or refs to it on the web. But I don't know whether he transcribed this performance.
Opinions are cool I suppose. And not all listeners are the type that have heard and listen to all the various styles of jazz which endless. I feel this beautifully played and as for swing...what are you talking about? Please show me an example of what u mean by swing. This is pretty swingin
@billroue what a sweet notion! read some remarks on bill evan's "longest suicide". still a mystery to me, how he made each performace so alive:-) maybe he was "god" :-))
Dear toyotayaruno-san, try learning this arrangement by listening repeatedly step by step the melody, the bass line and the chords - it really is the best way - you develop your ears, you'll understand the artist better and it's free of charge......(:)) Good luck with that!
Yeah this might be the wrong place to look for that kinda feel. Bill Evans is heavily influenced by French Western classical music and it mixes beautifully with his jazz feel. If I were you I would check out Oscar Peterson.
negro or white it doesnt matter. period!!! you guys dont love music if you you talk about white or black! only amateurs talk bout that and people that dont have any ideea what music its all about! bill was one of the best and it will remain this way for eternity.
A great rendition, 'specially the intro. Evans should've grabbed more of the spotlight and less to the other musicians. Too bad he didn't solo this one.
Yeah, midi recordings do sound like crap, but their rhythm is perfectly exact. I'm just saying that when Bill Evans plays, every little note goes right where it should. For instance, the thing he does in the bass clef at 2:13

His piano intro on this is unbeliveably beautiful. I've listened to it so many times
you’re right :)
Joe Labarbera , 70 this year, is still that great..
I eat this stuff, it makes me grow.
Maine, my dear friend. I'm shocked, dazzled by such beauty. That time lapse you quoted is nothing more than Bill Evans ... period.

Very Very Good!
I fall in love with you. I not really understand about jazz, but i think i will listen more and more

Bill Evans had impeccable rhythm. At times he sounds as precise as a midi recording.

Genial, solo genial!
Its incredible how, even with his way of life and addictions, and this being his last year alive, he barely seems past 40.
Uncle Felipe..i love this moment wonderful phrase bill did AMAZING 5:27 - 5:31
oh no that piano is somewhat crazy!!!!
Ha, I think all Bill Evans song's have that vibe.
Keep listening, it will be worth it, I promise!

Vamo Labarbera viejo y peludo noma
Brasilian men,like bil evans
i love how dissonant the way he plays the melody is. it creates that "love hurts" vibe

@bivala
Ditto!
I've been watching trying to like, but I can't. Everything is marvellously played, but I can't find that deep, bluesy swing I love in jazz.
stripped down bare and ready to go...
DID JOE LABARBERA PLAY DRUMS FOR TONY BENNETT? I THINK HE DID BUT I NOTICED TONY HAS ANOTHER DRUMMER NOW - ANYONE KNOW WHAT HAPPENED? THANKS

Cannonball Adderly. Arnette Cobb.
it is very sad that justin bieber has like 300,000,000 views and this has only 143,404...
when you agree with the pre vious post (like, "me, too")
