As long as the item is NOT surge protected, there shouldn't be a safety concern. And if they would simply provide enough outlets or USB ports in the room, this wouldn't even be a subject of conversation.

@njjeff201 The electrical systems on ships are wired a little bit differently than what they are on land, and surge protectors on power strips can cause adverse issues. If they find a power strip in your luggage that has surge protection built in, they will confiscate it if you try bringing it aboard.

      @timlaunyc 7 годин тому

It's not surge protection. It's actually the power cord. If the wires in the cord (as in actual copper, not just filler like rubber insulation) are too thin, it's a fire risk.

  • @TheresaForino

The biggest problem with this is for people like my husband who use a CPAP machine. With so many ships without outlets near the beds. We bring a non-surgprotected extension cord that we run along the ceiling with magnetic hooks so he can sleep at night. We had tried asking for one on the ship to provide, but they never have one available, so we, of course, bring our own. This is a medical device that these people need to use. So unless cruise lines want to make sure they have plenty to hand out, they better not be stricked on CPAP users.

The thing about the idea of charging items while out at dinner or wherever - many room stewards are required to unplug items that are charging when the guests are not in the room. All as another safety method. So that idea wouldn’t work either. Royal better never ban the multi-USB charger.

    • @Fluffyunicorns33

The other thing when charging your phone at dinner is that if you have them clean your room when you are at dinner is that the room steward might steal your phone. @@margierites7407 when it comes to cruising they are terrified of fires on board the ship because if a fire happens at sea there is no where to run from it. As a result they try there absolute best to have as little chance of a fire happening as possible. That can include unplugging cords when you are away and banning items that have a chance of catching on fire. The rooms are purposefully made of metal because metal is more fire resistant than other materials. That is why they have changed their rules of what is allowed on a ship.

On the recent Ultimate World Cruise on Serenade OTS, there was a fire in one of the passenger cabins. A World Cruiser shared this information: " the passengers in the cabin had a multiport charger, which they plugged into the outlet, plugged in their devices and left the charger and the devices on the bed. The passengers then left the cabin. Sometime later the bedding caught fire, the smoke detector went off and the sprinklers in the cabin went off. The crew's fire control team then entered the cabin to extinguish the blaze."
Wonder if this recent event is part of the renewed emphasis on what plugs are allowed and what plugs aren't allowed.

This makes no sense whatsoever. I normally bring my laptop or surface to be able to do work and further trip planning. As well as have video equipment that needs places to plug in backup batteries. Not only isn't there enough plugs for those items but then you get multiple people and its IMPOSSIBLE. Plus, where they put plugs don't allow you to have the items near you like to work in bed for instance. So they're not just banning the multi plug outlets, but also extension cords. There was a "possible" legitimate reason for banning the surge protector types, because they claimed that it caused problems with the ships electrical grid. But then people went out and bought the specific types that were made for ship travel and were APPROVED to do so. These were approved by RCL as well as most other cruise lines. But notice now they're not giving a REASON for this ban. This may cause RCL group some backlash. When people can't fully enjoy their trip because the items that they need, they aren't able to use them. I eliminate some of the problem myself as I bring USB hubs to plug in things like phones, but other items require higher power to charge than what USB allows.

@@robertbowling3679 I know. Just saying we cruised with Carnival about 9 times until our last cruise which had 3 ports the captain claimed he couldn’t dock due to weather. Well it was sunny, hardly a wind & we watched another ship pull in so weather was an excuse. The crew said he always does this. Complaining to Carnival was useless; in fact they didn’t respond until I complained the second time. I wasn’t asking for a refund but I felt we were due something, anything. We got nothing, not even an apology. So we haven’t been back & never will.

Yeah maybe they need to keep some passengers from breaking into fights at locations where fights are most likely to break out. Then we’ll talk about chargers. 🙄 I’ve only ever brought the cruise line approved ones so this seems a bit insane. I half expected them to say “well you can’t bring these approved ones onboard BUT if you go to the gift shop you can buy…” 😂 (Don’t give them ideas). My last experience on a RCCL ship was in 2016, and other than being a member of a friend’s wedding, the trip is only memorable for crew members coming into the SPA locker room to take a smoke break (that’s a LONG story) and the strip steak that was so bad the waiter told me to put gravy on it as “I’ve heard it won’t make the taste so bad.” 😂 So thanks Royal for being so safety conscious with approved charging units. I’ll remember that next time I think about that boiled steak you dumped on my plate!

You don’t have to plug every electric object you bring on board at once! Overloading an electric system by 4 to 10 times depending on how many outlet multipliers you use is dangerous. Now imagine everyone does that. Would you plug 8 things into every outlet you have in your home, certainly not because you’d probably overload the system tripping breakers, or worse burning down your house.

This is a non-issue & shouldn't actually affect anyone's cruises. If you need to charge multiple items, get a USB hub & I am fairly certain RC will accommodate anyone who needs an extension cord for medical purposes (you just have to let them know in advance).

try finding outlets on an older ship. this will keep us off RCL... we need scooter, CPAP plugged in over night.... let alone iPhone and Apple Watch. Seems to me a battery bank might be a risk as well.

I agree, it's like they are looking for things to ban. Like the recent story from people wanting speakers banned. The rules already say that using speakers in public areas is not permitted, so enforce the rules instead of trying to ban everyone from having a speaker on the ship. I suspect this ban is because they ban surge protected power strips, and it's hard to tell one from another, so they just want to ban them all. It's stupid.

Bring a power socket converter inside the airport and I’m bored the airplane no a big problem and it’s past the security checks and screening . It does not make sense. It cannot be bought onto a cruise ship.
I was suspect that some of the power sockets for example the United States power socket outlet people might sharpen them into the pointy and it becomes a weapon . Plus the cruise is not a prison.

If they really do ban multi-outlet devices (power strip without the cord), I'm going to have to rethink cruising with RCCL/X. Guess I need to look for a better charging brick or I could take the big (really big) one.

Glad I don't cruise on Royal, then.. The number of things they are wanting banned on ships is reaching insanity level.. There are far too many "maybes" in their thoughts.. There are any number of fire hazards anywhere we go. How many fires have been caused by power strips? I'm betting none. The ships I have sailed on usually have ONE 120 volt outlet on them, only one ship had USB plugs to charge phones and things.. I specifically went and bought a non surge protected strip for our next cruise after going on 7 with a surge protected strip that I didn't know wasn't allowed. Since they never said anything at security, I had no clue.

Because 98% of those adapters are cheap Chinese made crap and are huge fire hazards. But hey, if you want to be trapped with thousands of people on a bon fire floating in the middle of the ocean, just go ahead and sneak it onboard.
