- We speak with PEN America CEO Suzanne Nossel about the resignation of journalist Masha Gessen from the free expression group’s board following the cancellation of a Russian writers panel at the recent PEN World Voices Festival after Ukrainian writers threatened to boycott. “It’s unfortunate,” Nossel says, but notes Gessen plans to remain a PEN member and work on its project to archive Russian independent media.

why is DN reporting on Masha's resignation through the other side of the coin, giving voice to those who organized the event, instead of platforming Masha to tell their own reasons?
Russian-American writers were in effect pushed out, however the PEN director whitewashes 3:51 it.
Disappointed that this “softball” interview doesn’t press the issue as strongly of equal opportunity for speech free from government intimidation when it’s the Ukrainian government as when it’s the FL or Russian government
Democracy for All means upholding the rights of all even if their nationality is Russian.
“Have to correct you Amy” goes on to say that it was cancelled due to Ukraine asking but in a long winded way
Totally uncomplicated Ukrainian soldiers...???
Correcting Amy? Okay. Hum...
Free speech? where are thou???🤭😂🤣
The xenophobia keeps ratcheting up. Censorship and canceling over dialogue and debate.
Being repulsed by the evil russian states behavoir and poopin is normal.
Xenophobia shouldn't be protected as free speech.
If we are to apply the same standards to American writers or Americans in general, then we’d never be invited anywhere in the world given the millions of innocent people this country has killed in the global south…
Xenophobia? That's a load of garbage. Imperialist apologists who think Ukraine should roll over to Russia should be kicked out. How about Russia allowing Ukrainians a voice in their media & literary institutions.
@@pro-choicemom Might need to read some history. Your reply makes no sense. US, NATO and Ukraine are the Imperialists. Russia, China and BRICS are the anti-imperialists by far.
Nope shouldn’t have canceled the Russian writers. That’s picking a side. They should be able to say their part just like you let Ukrainian writers speak their part. Shame total shame
Writers are typically academics and they excel at *Cancel Culture.* Academics are some of the pettiest people on the planet. I ought to know, since I work amongst them.
@@paulheydarian1281 lmao
That's not even picking a side, it's far more discriminatory than that. Those Russians were on the same side with Ukrainians. They weren't pro-war pro-Putin propagandists
Inviting anyone actually supporting and defending the war and conveying the position of the Russian government of course completely out of the question
No. Boycott all things Russia. We DID pick a side, Ukraine.
Please wake up! This is not about the people of Russia, it's against Putin. Enough is we enough.
@@jacquelinesimpson6672 "Boycott all things Russia" Buttttt "this is not about the people of Russia, its against Putin"
It's like when people are whipped into a fanatical fervor for war they dont even think 😂
She called it The Ukraine.... at 1:24. That's tells you her orientation.
Looks like it's not just the Azov battalion with this particular ideology
Funny you mention it cause it’s the US who sponsored the Nazis to begin with.
All of russia is fed lies and nazilike hate , they have no free press. So? Do you get that?
By the way, where are the camps for Russian Americans going to be?
No worries. They're coming to a house near you. ☻🇷🇺
I am happy to host some of their females.

😉🐽🐷🐖💨
Never. Now china has 100,000 death camps so maybe there?😮
Shame on the organization punishing Russia's innocent writers.
Innocent? Lmao
@@pro-choicemom How are those authors guilty of anything?
@@vivalaleta
They are actual Russians playing apologetics wanting Ukraine to give up territory.
@@pro-choicemom For 8 years before this war the Azov battalion was bombing Russian speaking areas of Ukraine. This was one of the major reasons Russia perpetrated war on Ukraine. If Ukraine can't keep Russian speaking citizens safe it doesn't deserve to have them.

Hilarious! Hey Spanish speakers in the US are often not treated fairly and are discriminated against ( none of which happened to these Russian speakers CHOOSING to live in UKRAINE) shouldn’t Mexico invade the US? These Russian speakers, most of who were imported from Russia had every opportunity to go live in the country they so love-why didn’t they just live in Russia? Your argument is so sad & debunked that i cant believe you had the nerve to use it. 😂🤣
FREE JULIAN ASSANGE, HERO. FROM BELMARSH!!!!💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯
I never thought I'd see the day where Democracy Now actively promotes xenophobia.
It's not xenophobic to kick out fascists apologist for imperialist Russia.
@Pro-Choice Mom I can tell you didn't even watch the video or pay any attention, it's literally US quislings and Russian exiles. They're so racist they're shooting themselves in the foot
@@pro-choicemomBut I thought you were pro choice? Masha chose to step down. Fascists, Imperialists, apologists, oy. Your mother raised a ranting hysteric.
If they have their own requirements set by their organization that they can't violate why should the event accommodate for that when it doesn't do that for all other nations. If accommodations are given for one then everyone deserves accommodation. She was right to say they were put at the little table. Is the event supposed to be partial or impartial to the issues the nationals are facing?
I thought PEN is about writing not about politics.
Wait so these russian writers are independent voices that were at times critical of putin? Are the ukrainians too blind by hate to see that or am I missing something.
“US sponsored the Nazis” UA-cam it and you’ll find hundreds of video proving it.
You are missing the entire "Amy, I have to correct you" part, which is everything she said.
Ukrainians said that they have a visa that could be violated if they attended due to security concerns and minor changes to the event didn't sufficiently address the problem, because they changed nothing except branding, which is not "security concern".
In short, organisers were lazy / greedy / had limited resources, choose the cheapest option, it did not work out.
@Aljaž what were the security concerns? I'll have to watch again
@@5daboz its white washing, those russians are not pro putin, they are just russian and thats all that matters for Ukrainians, its xenophobia.
Besides it is beyond obvious the urkainians want the world to see that they exclusively won the war even tho the entire westrrn world is fighting for them, they send everything but more troops.
@@5daboz lol she corrected nothing, said it only in a long winded manner. Russians were out since Ukraine asked.
Tool of the west discovers what russophobia REALLY is, should I laugh??? 🤷♂😆
As they say, the chickens have come home to roost.
Congratulations! The air will be cleaner with it departure
DidI hear correct, Ukrainian and American soldiers coming from the front?
Good. There is too much hate and cancelling around as it is. Good for anyone who stands up for their ethnicity.
Amy you should have Masha on more instead of Katrina, Medea, and the other pro-pukin usual suspects
Masha Gessen is a hero. It has raised its brave voice against thee Ukraijianian bigotry and prejudice.
How about russian bigotry and prejudice towards Ukrainians? Did Masha ever raised concerns that russia has been trying to exterminate Ukrainian language and culture?
honest coverage, thanks!
I understand both arguments. Being Russian doesn’t make you a bad guy, but the western world is trying to put stress of the people up the chain to their government. However, Russian Americans are Americans not Russians, so it makes no connection to the Russian government, and is just bigotry if it’s true they aren’t allowing them to write.
Uh, no? If they still had Russian citizenship, there’d still be no excuse for xenophobia EVER…especially if they risk their lives speaking out against the regime.
To do this to ordinary Russian writers is not only xenophobic, it reeks of hypocrisy. PEN AMERICA…AMERICA… should ppl do this to American writers abroad because of the MILLIONS of innocent people this country’s government/military have murdered?
No sense of irony for Americans who do this to Russian people?
@@verar5844 It is very sad ...where is all political correctness ? Ukrainian Nazi colaborator have monument here -it is humiliating for so tollerant country as Canada is - and people who are working as an artists , not politicians cannot present themself because they are Russians?
Thank you 🌎✊🗽🌹
Since when is xenophobia liberal? Since when is banning, discriminating against and/or entertaining doing so against another human being, because of their nationality and/or ethnicity, liberal?
Are these people from the same USA that has committed genocide in Iraq, Afghanistan, Cambodia, Hiroshima and too many other places to name? Maybe people in the rest of the world should treat American writers, journalists, photographers or us Americans like you’re treating ordinary Russians? When Americans arrive to a lot of the world say “sorry, but people from X country that your military/gov have committed crimes against don’t want you to be here”…If we apply the same standards to Americans, and Brits, then neither Americans or Brits would be at over half of the worlds events.
No sense of irony and/or reflection? The American exceptionalism/privilege showing, even amongst so-called “liberals”
It must be nice for us Americans, especially the elites, to never have to be collectively punished no matter how many crimes our gov commits.
Zelenshy is dictating American politicians in matters of international politics and now Ukraine is dictating Americal cultures. Wow!?
Wait until Trump is president again, Zelensky would be like a little scared rat, hiding in the corner!
@@kman5768 Only if military industrial complex changes it's warmongering attitude. Chances for are minuscule, or nonexistent. Next Presidential elections will be win by candidate who i pro war in Ukraine. Voters will be manipulated in the way like never before. There is to much interest for wealthy people for war to continues that if will influenced elections in the way that candidate against war will not stand the chance.
Zelensky is a marionette for neocon/CIA fascists. Washington and London are calling the shots and the Ukro scoundrels are their tools and collanorators. Of course they see eye to eye on their "democracy" narrative (actually a cover for fascism and censorship).
Same playbook as Syrian moderate rebels and mujahadeen. The Brits initiated the modern freedom fighter playbook in WW1. Lawrence of Arsnia anyone?

Let’s be factual, Zelensky & Ukraine have cracked down on journalists, opposition political parties, even language far more fiercely & fascist then Putin or Russia has. The comparison isn’t close. Ukraine has been far more fascist.
That's hysterical.
Try holkdinga placard in Russia. You're a clown. I wouldn't want to work with people who play apologetics with Russia's attempt to annihilate my entire country.
@@pro-choicemom ok pro choice mom 😂
We need to boycott anyone coming here from Russia.
Since when is xenophobia “liberal”? Should people boycott/ban us Americans from the world given all the innocent civilians the USA has killed in the global south?
Being Jewish means attaining the sensation of two contrasting forces in nature, the egoistic force, which is our human nature, and its opposite altruistic force, which is the force of nature itself.
The attainment of these two forces define the people who, first under Abraham, developed this sensation of reality. They became known as the people of Israel, and later, as the Jews.
At a certain point, around 2.000 years ago, we lost the sensation of the two forces and lived solely in the egoistic force. That is the meaning of being in exile.
Exile has no geographic connotations, i.e. that we left some geographic Land of Israel and now we return to it. It is rather a matter of an inner exile, that we do not host the sensation of the altruistic nature, i.e. the quality of love, bestowal and connection, between us. When we fell from this sensation, we then entered our period of exile and ceased to exist as the people of Israel.
🇷🇺 & 🇨🇳 are the hope for the world to throw off 🇺🇸 fascism.
Just because the USA is devolving into fascism doesn't mean Russia isn't fascist either. Stop putting countries on a fucking pedestal. No government is there to help you or me, only to ensure those who own and move capital can continue to exploit us.
Garbage
If Masha Gessen had been born with a normal face, or at least had an operation, she might not have gone downhill... But she didn't.
