I can see from other comments that I am not alone at baulking at the idea of paying more for shipping than for the products… are there any plans to have a European publisher to sell the book ?
Writing in from India to echo what everyone outside of the US has been saying - cost of shipping exceeds cost of the book. We have the additional burden of customs duty, which is calculated on the total cost. Will wait for it to be available through Amazon.
I think you as a photography commentator, critic, educator, content creator, etc are the perfect match for Ralph. I agree with what you said about his intellect coming through in his work.
Got my copy in the mail today. It came quickly and I am looking forward to sitting down and go thought it. From the looks of it, it's extensive and had a lot of great images. Thanks again to you and Ralph Gibsons. he's a great artist and I've been a fan of his work since seeing some of him images in the Time-Life Photography series. thanks again, for increasing my library with another interesting and inspirational book.
This is a fantastic book. It's evenly mixed perspective of personal thoughts and technique, and obviously, some really interesting photos throughout. It's my first introduction to Ralph Gibson, and I'll likely reread this several times and look into his other offerings. A question: What other books are along this same vein? Beyond that, how about other photo books that are of the same print quality? One thing I noticed about this book, and looking at others in bookstores, is that the quality of Ralph's book is extremely well done. The paper and print is great to the touch and appears to be fantastic for photo reproduction. Do any other books like this come to mind for anyone to recommend as well?
Going to have to pick this up. Sounds like it might be in the same vein as swarvoski or stephen shore's books, which i really enjoyed reading and discovering new artist through.
Thanks to Ralph Gibson to share his thoughts about making photographs. Being a great artist and a good teacher is not usual. That's why I also highly recommend Stephen Shore's Modern Instances.
Thank you Ted, you're always a great source of inspiration and knowledge. Like many already commented here, in Italy I've the same issue, the UPS shipping takes a huge toll, way more than the actually shown because once delivered you'll be charged with further taxes and UPS storage costs. I've already had a similar issue and the grand total was 3 to 4 times the book value. :/
Hmmm, yet again, one of the reasons your UA-cam channel is so different (and more provocative, in the best of ways) from others. Thanks. I’ll check out your past interviews of Ralph.
Hey Ted, love the book by Ralph and tried to buy a copy for delivery here in Australia, but the delivery charges more than doubled the cost to AU$150 which is just too rich for me. Are there any plans to make it available via Amazon in the near future? Their delivery chain manages to minimise the costs significantly at least.
@@raymorgan4337 HAd the same experience Ray . but also Addendum.... Looks like a very inspirational book and one I'd like to own but at €47 for an unsigned copy and €45 for shipping to Europe it's not going to happen unfortunately. Ralph really is missing a trick here judging by the comments below on costs for worldwide shipping.
Yes I was also excited to order, but with the discount code applied, the shipping is more than the book. No way I can justify $78 in shipping. A great shame.
I ordered a copy. Could not figure out where to put the promo code, but I am looking forward to receiving the book. Thanks for all the good work that you do.
Thanks for sharing this, Ted! I just ordered my copy and am really looking forward to reading it. Ralph Gibson has been an inspiration for a long time for me. I first learned about his work as a journalism major/photography student in the 1970s, and I still find his work fascinating to this day.
I got my signed copy and very happy - beautiful book and wonderful artist. I can understand the pain of those across the pond on shipping, but I've ordered books from over there and I feel the pain as well. I guess it evens out and nothing like having something tangible and timeless on display when there are so many other things that can take your money for nothing.
I just wish you could open it properly. The printing is amazing, the best Ive seen ! but you just cant open the book to lay flat due to the glued spine . I think thats a real shame. It should have had a proper spine so you could open the book and it lay flat .
Got my copy today. So far I've only done a quick flip through. All I can come up with to say is, overwhelmingly amazing! Or amazingly overwhelming! Maybe both? Thank you, Ted, for introducing me to this incredible artist!👍
I am in the same boat here, even though I don’t really look at many books these days, I would still love to purchase a copy but the shipping to AU is a killer at almost the same price or more than the book depending on which option you go with.
Does anyone know if this is eventually coming to bookstores? As previously mentioned here, shipping to Canada is the same price as the book. I'd love to buy it.
I really wanted to get this book but international shipping (to eu) is >$100 and the book is $48. I contacted brilliant so we'll see if they offer more shipping options and I know has nothing to do with you ofc, just unfortunate, I am very excited to get my hands on it!
Or, did he bring you into this? Thanks for the 10% link. Seen one of the vids but don't recall seeing the one where is sorting the photos on the floor. Will look for it soon.
Gotta say, I appreciate you reviewing books. Growing up I rarely read books but I'd look at pictures a lot. Turned into a realism artist in HS/College, then transitioned to graphic design and photography. Wish someone would do another Blow Up movie
Hey Ted, sorry to make a comment that has nothing to do with the video. I've been wanting to get a fujilfilm x100v (Really hard to find right now though) and saw you had a video on it (Fujifilm X100V :: Hands On in NYC) so I of course watched it. Agree with the chorus of comments. Aud$78-108 for shipping is just crazy. This is 4-5x what shipping from the USA normally costs (If the supplier chargesfor shipping at all).
Hey guys, there's one thing I don't understand in Ted's videos (English is not my native language) : what does he always say at the end ? I hear : "Until then... later" Is that correct ? What does mean this "later" ? Is it a typical expression ?

Wondering about that image on the cover. Did Ralph Gibson crop and/or cut into a random image to produce that cover image? Or did he visualize it before hand and then go out and shoot it as it appears on the cover?
I went to the website, and the shipment and delivery cost as much as the book. I really hope that they have a more affordable shipments for people in Australia.

Thanks Ted, just ordered my copy and can't wait to get it. Please keep up the good work on your channel as it's very inspiring for me and with others I'm sure.
Shame on me, I didn´t knew Ralph. I looked him up and I am deeply impressed. Somehow he seems to lack the popularity he deserves in Europe but his work is incredible. The video presenting Refractions 2 is very interesting but the shipping costs are really high. But regardless, I collect books about photography and I will forget the shipping costs soon. :-) Thank you very much for this inspiring video!
You keep doing this. My photography, library, darkroom and camera collection has been heavily influenced by you. Another wonderful book to add to my collection. Thank you and keep it up. Just don’t ever meet my wife, she has a few words reserved for the guy who is responsible for the darkroom that takes up half her garage.
Feels like coming full circle... back in the 1970s I attended a program that Ralph led at the Maine Photographic Workshop. It was a wonderful immersive week. And then life happened and I went in other directions. And now I'm again picking up a camera and discovering what we (the camera and I) see together. Very happy to have this book show up now as I come back to an old love. Thanks for your channel and for the interviews with Ralph.
First - I love and appreciate your videos, Ted, thank you!! Re this book: I was planning to buy it, because it sounds great and I LOVE the cover image. But I read an interview with Gibson that put me off. Quote: "I want to know how this technology, which we will consider to be a formal construct, impacts what I’m able to say in my photographs, which is the art that’s discussed in terms of form and content. Let’s say the form is digital imagery. How does this speak differently than analog film, silver gelatin? There is a difference, and it has to do with the fact that the image is somewhat compressed, in terms of its perspective. The laws of perspective were invented in the Renaissance. Prior to that time, painting was entirely two dimensional. That particular illusion of space, from the picture plane back, as we've grown accustomed to it in film, is foreshortened on the digital sensor." How could it be possible that things are more compressed or foreshortened on the digital sensor than they are on film? This makes me doubt the rest of what he says.
He is not the first artist or photographer to say this, the difference is in the medium, both film and digital are different mediums of representing what we see and therefore differences in representation can be expected. Google it and you will find more discussions on this topic. I’m not sure it’s a reason to disbelieve everything else he says.
Ted, I ordered this book based on your reccomendation, through your affiliate link, and using your discount code. Shipping from this company is very expensive. Clearly they are making money from shipping. Still, I selected one of the fast shipping methods because I wanted to read this while recovering from a planned surgery. On check out delivery was estimated to be July 11th. It is now past that date and the company still has not even shipped. I beleive that when you choose to affiliate with and reccomend a product or company that you should make sure that the company treats your viewers in a way you would want them to. This company doesn't keep its word, nor does it provide fair service even for services it charges premium amounts for. This damages your reputation along with theirs. I suggest you rethink your affiliation with them. Thank you, Steven Dente
Steven - I completely understand your frustration. I'll pass your note along now and my apologies. To be clear, this is not an affiliate project - I did this as a favor to Ralph and the publisher because I feel they have an excellent book. I'm making no money on this at all. In fact, I spent money doing the interview videos. But you are right - I do put my reputation on the line. As many others in this thread have expressed their frustration on the shipping prices, these are based on shipping standard USPS mail, which is expensive. I have expressed this to the publisher, but please understand they are not Amazon and don't have world wide distribution. That being said there are ways to work on getting those rates down a little, but that is their business. I can only make suggestions. As I said I will pass your note along now. I'd suggest you email them as well (just reply to your order confirmation). Hopefully they can provide a more specific explanation and estimated arrival. My sincere apologies...
Interesting looking book, but way to expensive to send it to Belgium! Plus import taxes and duty... no way for me. Will have to wait until it's imported here... I regret this situation, and I'm not the only one.
I can see from other comments that I am not alone at baulking at the idea of paying more for shipping than for the products… are there any plans to have a European publisher to sell the book ?
Honestly if you want a Gibson book buy something else. This won’t tell you anything new
Just arrived here with the same thought. Unfortunate :-(
Why European publisher? We just need economy delivery option. Postage from America to EU doesn't have to cost 86 USD.

As I said I will pass your note along now. I'd suggest you email them as well (just reply to your order confirmation). Hopefully they can provide a more specific explanation and estimated arrival.
My sincere apologies...
Thanks for the discount. I love his work and will order this book.
Of course it’s a Ralph Gibson’s book. What a master 💕
Very inspiring, thanks for sharing :)
This is so inspiring:)
Really surprised it was a paperback for the price and it’s OK I’ll give it 2 1/2 thumbs up
Love your content.
great as usual Ted. I will look forward to reading and seeing this book! Looks great!
Went to order but no. They want US$78 shipping
Interesting looking book, but way to expensive to send it to Belgium! Plus import taxes and duty... no way for me. Will have to wait until it's imported here... I regret this situation, and I'm not the only one.
More than Hitchcock, wouldn't it be his DP, Robert Burks?
