After having a good look at the raw files here's my opinion. Clearly the files from the R5 are better. You've got a bigger sensor and more light coming into the camera so it goes without saying the image quality will be better. Due to this the raw files were much easier and quicker to edit. If you are a pro, or earning any money from photography, the R5 will save you time, give more features (the AF tracking is amazing!) and in any business, time is money!
However, it's surprising what post processing can do these days. The R100 was shooting at ISO's of around 3200 and with the denoise function in Lr you wouldn't even know! For £600, this little thing is a belter!

I actually found myself preferring the r100 shots. The r5 shots had too much light reflecting off the subject. This may be something correctable in post editing, but the more muted light result of the r100 seemed to match the subject and environment better.

You also need to look at camera features, ie duel card slots, high ISO performance, back button focus, and eye tracking, availability of lenses etc etc.

Hi Mark, great video. My question is, what would the image quality be like if you swapped lens' on each camera? I hear over and over that it's not necessarely the camera but the lens that's going to give you the best image. Wondering what your opinion is on this.

That is a great question, but as full frame lenses aren't designed for APS-s even expensive full frame lenses can result in unsatisfactory images.

Looking at these images objectively its not worth 10x more. But the r5 setup would do better in lower light and has more video capabilities. But for daylight photo the r100 is good. And if the buyer adds the 50 f1.8 theyre really set.

I like the images from the R100 and I think any person who knows what to do can achieve great results, the R5 obviously is a step up in many ways but do you really miss that when someone shows you the results of a photo shoot with a lower priced camera? ATB MMMD

If you want to have photos converted to wall art then yes the R5 would be the way to go. Really depends on what you want out of your photos. Prices have come down. I just picked up the R5 kit for $3800 US with RF 28-105 F4 L lense. Still pricey but now a little older with newer models competing.

Canon need to stop overcharging their customers outside the US for a start. Even taking foreign exchange rates and taxes into account, their cameras end up 30%+ more expensive than they should be… and other brands definitely don’t do this to the same extent.

These expensive cameras are just really for professionals, but Canon have to sell many to cover the cost of R+D. If you have plenty of money you can buy whatever you want. For the average amateur enthusiast a crop sensor camera is more than enough or a cheaper full frame. We have come to expect the camera to do most of the work, when in the past equipment was basic but real photographers still took great photos! How many people have the wall space to be able to hang large prints, which obviously a more expensive camera can achieve? Personally I have taken shots on a 5MP bridge camera, printed them to A3 and friends have asked for prints and have had them professionally framed, so they can’t be that bad can they?

It's all about the lenses, not the bodies. The R100 with a great RF lens will give some excellent photos, period. It's on sale for $299 right now. Thats cheaper than 95% of the RF lenses. No brainer at that price.

I believe the RF 24-70mm f/2 lens is the prize winner in the battle, that can be mounted on any Canon mirrorless camera. The real battle royal for difference would be mounting that exact lens on the R5, and the R7 to see how much difference there is. I just looked up the current cost where I am, and that kit combination would come in less at $4198 before taxes in the USA. For $700 less there is the f/2.8 version of that lens you could mount on the R7, and it would be hard to tell the difference between that and the R5 with the f/2. I would prefer owning the f/2 since I have been hearing about it for some time now. It was hard to find when it first came out, and they were around $4000 USD. That lens is literally like having 4 lens in one.

There is more to cameras than image quality. It also depends on type of work you do. Some cameras are fast and you don't miss a shot. I used M50 and it was good but after switching to full frame I will only consider M50 as a backup or have R8.

As a serious amateur photograper, that all i photograph are my kids running around, i think the r100 will suit my needs perfectly. I didn't look at the raw files but at them on the video, which is where all my friends and family look at my photos, on resized social media platforms like IG. I don't think it's worth 10x more, but if you have the money, hey why not, life is short, gotta enjoy life. But i upgraded from my R6 to R6mk2 and unless i have the settings incorrect, i find the tracking on the R6MK2 to be much better. i feel, like you mention, it depends on your needs. Although I've recently purchased a canon ivy2 photo printer and that's made things a lot of fun printing out my photos, not the best quality but it's great for quick sharing at gatherings. thanks for this great comparison! i wonder what the R5mk2 will bring us (it's a great camera already) thanks for the great channel and until next video!

For the elements you were in, the R100 was fine enough for most people most of the time. 30 years ago, similar results would be available on film cameras, but with more time processing, and no instant check of your resulting image. Whilst the Canon R series and mirrorless generally is fascinating to review, I’m Sure in more professional hands than mine, my Canon 6d and 24-105 L lens would achieve great results too. It’s a great educational video, but it is also part of the upgrade ‘need’ philosophy- I.e. current is best, future will be better, so upgrade if you can, but it’s not necessarily the case. I have to learn more (I’m looking at The School of Photography to aid this!) but my current camera and lenses should be more than enough, and compare favourably to these 2 cameras.
Great content btw, you are always informative, and interesting- for many YT producers this is very often not the case!
    😀🙏

    • @theschoolofphotography

No. Tv screens and phones will render the colours differently. Generally they show a more saturated look. View it on a fully calibrated screen for accuracy of colours.

I have back issues. In the past I would have to bend down, focus on a person, then recompose and shoot. With the R5 I simply press the button, it finds the eye, I can have the subject anywhere in the frame. This one feature was a gamechanger.

    Hi Marc. Very interesting experiment!!
Comparing the two sets of images I really don't see a £6000 difference between the two sets, as the R100 appears to have performed really well, in your hands anyway. Yes sure there is more defined contrast and detail in the R5 images but then you'd expect that, but lets remember this isn't a side by side comparison test and the R100 performed really well and the results wouldn't disappoint most amatuer photographers.
Would I buy another APS-C system after my older backup but still working 650d gets retired? After this experiment I probably would but for now I'll stick to my new R6Mk2 and 650d.
    Cheers, Stu😎

Great video. In most cases APSc will give you good results and if you expose correctly even ISO 3200 isn't a big problem as you say. I would be interested to know if you think if the R5 is worth 4.5 times as much as an R7 with the 18 - 150 Rfs?

    • @theschoolofphotography
      @theschoolofphotography  6 місяців тому

Thanks Martin, haven't played with the R7 so wouldn't know the answer to that. Maybe someone else can chip in here who has the R7?

    • @dannydriscoll9744

I’ve got an R7 and use the RF 100-400 for wildlife, it’s a fantastic combination, I can shoot up to ISO 6400 comfortably in good light and have even attempted ISO 12800 for birds in flight! There’s a UA-camr called Duade Paton who compared the two at times for wildlife photography. He has mentioned that the R5 will always beat the R7 in lowlight scenarios.
I should also mention that with an R7 you must carefully consider your lenses. My EF 50mm F1.8 and EF 24mm F2.8 give razor sharp photos (when stopped down a few stops of course!), however other lenses may struggle with the high pixel density.
