      I wouldn’t worry about the wiring, once it’s there in front of you it’s simple enough. The auto takes a bit more but it’s really not allot, most of it runs through one plug that’s all ready on the loom.

    Hi, i have m57tu 204hp with edc16c31 computer. I like to put it on boat. I finish everything to fit in there, engine mounts, water intercooler, water to water exchanger, flywheel adapter and adapter plate for transmision. I have problem only with speed signal because I haven’t it on the boat and engine because of that can’t deliver full power because computer “thinks” that the “car” is not driving. Is it possible to fix that error without speed sensor signal?

      Hi mate, sorry I took so long to reply, you can definitely remove any limitations on it. I’m from more of a mechanic/fabrication background so I don’t know how to do it personally but I know a lot of guys convert the ecu to manual to remove any limitations.
      How do you know this is what is causing the lack of power?

      Thanks mate!! I’m no expert on wiring the m57’s, especially the m57n’s I’ve got one sitting on my bench right now but I’ve yet to even make a start on it. I’m currently stripping it for a rebuild.
      As far as I know, there is no need to run anything as complicated as can for these engines but I guess it depends on your loom and how much integration with the existing cars system you’d like. I personally had everything I needed through manual sensors, (oil, charge etc)
      Good luck with your conversion!!!

      I’ve used the original alternator yes, I had no issues with mine anyways. The only thing I use to tell me it’s charging is the bulb and a voltmeter which is on a USB port I’ve installed in place of a cigarette lighter.
      Have you got 12v on the charge cable on the back? Is your power steering working? I’m trying to see if the belt is loose/slipping slightly.

So my point is, if you go manual, you will need a heavy duty clutch and a heavy duty left knee to go with it 😂

    Hi
    I message you a couple of months ago regarding my defender 90 swap I’m at a stage where the chassis is now built up and obviously I’m looking to find an x5 donor, the M57 is that the TwinTurbo or is the newer X5 a TwinTurbo I’m confused on which engine to go for, can you help me out there as if I buy the whole vehicle I’ve got everything I possibly need for the change but not sure which one to get, there’s a lot out there at fairly reasonable prices scrapped or damaged
    Kind regards mark

      @KeepitBigBore  2 роки тому

      Hi mate, I can’t say for sure but I don’t think the m57 x5 came as twin turbo. (Anyone feel free to correct me).
      If your looking for a twin turbo m57 then I think you need to be looking for 335d’s and 535d’s.
      Why do you want an x5 engine?

      I just thought that was the one to go for when fitting it’s 6 speed automatic m57 or m57n all alloy block big turbo with the little one below it. ?. A bit confusing.

      The x5 came with the 4wd auto and the 3 and 5 series had the 2 wheel drive box. You can use either one. You can buy adaptors to the lt230 transfer case for both boxes so best option is to fund a supplier for your adaptor, see which one you can get and decide your engine from there 👍🏽

      Thanks very much!
      As far as I’m aware, they use a similar potentiometer in the pedal, I’m not sure if the pinouts are the same but either way, it should not prevent it from starting. I ran my engine in my test stand without the pedal connected many times.

      This engine is from a 1999 530D (e39) they made this engine up to 2003 as far as I know.
      It then changed to an aluminium block, and a redesign of the engine (pistons, injectors ecu etc). My engine is the dde4. The newer m57 used dde5 and most of the wiring is very similar 👍🏽

    Hi, how you connect the rpm gauge? Thanks

    • @KeepitBigBore
      @KeepitBigBore  3 роки тому +2

      Hi mate. There is an RPM output from your ecu, it’s just 1 wire. I’ve left a link in the description for the rpm gauge I’ve used. It’s the only one that showed 6000rpm instead of 8,10 or 12 thousand so it’s specifically for Diesel engines. You can also calibrate this to suit different engines.
      I know my idle speed it roughly 750rpm. When connecting the gauge for the first time, my idle showed as 3000rpm. There is a small knob on the back, just turn it and the rpm will drop/raise as you turn in. I turned mine until it showed 750rpm at idle. It’s now accurate right up to 4750rpm. 👍🏽

      Hey mate, is it not working at all? Do the lights on the rpm gauge come on when you turn the ignition on? I can’t remember the colours of the wires but as far as I remember, there was ground, ignition and rpm signal. When you turn the ignition on, the gauge should turn from zero to max rpm and then back to zero again, does it do this?

    Hi mate, do you have to send power to the black wire to start it or can you use the vehicles original starter wire straight to the solenoid?
    We are trying this way and the engine is obviously cranking but it won't start. Is there anything else on the body plug that we need to connect?
    We have fuel at the rail, the inline pump is working but we think it's only 3 bar and don't have a gauge to check. Would it at least try to start with only 3 bar?

      Hi mate, sorry I didn’t get back sooner!!

      The easiest way is to use the black wire, you can hot wire the starter but I’d stick to the black wire on the body plug if I were you.

      The hardest part of the whole conversion was getting the shifter cable to work on the 6hp26. We had the biggest headache with different cables, levers and brackets but got there in the end. A 6hp28 with the electronic shifter would have been much easier.
