CO2 and water extinguishers cover A and B class extinguishers if I'm not mistaken. More than likely they will use a class D extinguisher for something like this and should be trained to not fight the fire unless they know exactly what they're fighting.

Used to work on a flight deck, and had to learn aircraft firefighting. We learned about what was effective for many different fire types. Pretty sure the answer to a magnesium fire is to find a way to push it overboard and sail away 😂

To put out a magnesium fire, you need to basically smother it. Throwing glass beads or Flux on it can really help. But sometimes it burns so hot that it will create a slurry of the flux you threw on it to put it out. You have to constantly throw flux on there to put it out. It will melt sand though. The glass beads break under the extreme heat, but will zap the oxygen out of the air and help put out the magnesium fire. Most modern vehicles after 2020 now feature magnesium/aluminum parts, so fires are harder to put out. NEVER USE WATER. It's just like an oil fire, it gets worse with wet stuff. Cover it up instead.
In the Navy magnesium would be a class delta fire which could happen to planes mostly, the way we usually would deal with it if it was a plane was to just toss it overboard rather lose a million dollar plane than a multi-million ship and crew

Fun fact magnesium is the main ingredient to making flashbangs. I remember doing an experiment in chemistry where we had to wear welder masks and burn magnesium over a Bunsen burner to study the different colors when burned with other metals. A lot of metals react very violently with water. Sodium metal literally explodes and others do too. What we see in this video basically explains lithium battery fires. You can deprive the fire of elemental oxygen (what normally feeds fires) but the lithium battery chemistry has oxygen chemically bonded to other elements. When thermal runaway occurs, the lithium rips the oxygen off of the other components and uses that to burn.

I learned that class delta fires were exceptionally dangerous to fight when I was in the service.
I used to work in a magnesium factory, that stuff is so reactive at least 1 explosion a day was expected, and it occasionally lit the ceiling on fire
