- Madeira is one of the destinations in our network for which you need extra training. In this case only the captain (after completing the training) is allowed to land at this airport. This airport is challenging because of the terrain around the airport and the wind conditions. Due to the terrain we can not fly in a straight line to the runway. The combination wind and terrain can make it very challenging to land at this airport. There are even certain wind directions and strengths, that make it impossible to land.
This flight shows a preferable condition for our passengers. Hardly any wind and good visibility. A joy for us as a pilot and the passengers too!
In this film you will see the combination between cockpit scenes and outside shots of this particular flight. For these outside shots I would like to thank my friends who are commonly spotting at this airport.

What did the nice lady mean at the end when she asked if you have any specials, and what did you mean by "we have one Romeo"? Is this a code?

One question though: What is the reason for editing out the callsign from the ATC Radio Transmittions but showing the airline from outside videos and writing the registration in some of the video descriptions?
It is an old commitment I made with the company.
But you are right. Perhaps I should ask what they want me to do with all other info provided.

Als een eitje zei mijn instructeur (Nico Schipper) op de Ch-172, 43 jr geleden, als ik een zachte landing had gemaakt zonder een bumpie te voelen in je stoel (Schiphol-Oost)...zo was deze landing ook ondanks de rook van de banden, knap werk captain...ik volg jullie al een tijdje en geniet ook van de leuke conversaties in het NL's.😊

Ok i read in description only Captain are allowed to Land here, but what if the Captain becomes incapacitated during the Approach, do you have to divert, probably not?

Weer een leuk filmpje, Mikaël, een van mijn favoriete luchthavens. Die approach lijkt veel makkelijker, maar ook minder leuk, dan de curved approach. Wordt deze dan gebruikt tot een bepaalde tail wind speed omdat het simpeler is?
Ik heb ook een Renault Zoe, maar nog geen zwaailichten... Goed dat ze voor een elektrische auto hebben gekozen.

Hey, when do you make the right turn to line up with the RCL?
It is a visual maneuver... but we start the right turn at missed approach point. Just passing or overhead the VOR....
Then continue visually and turn so not to overshoot the RCL.

Hoi. Hoe bepaal je de benodigde hoeveelheid flaps (30 of 40) bij een landing?
Je kan altijd landen met flaps 40… 😅
Maar we doen voor elke landing en “landing performance calculation”. Dat is een tool die het perfect voor ons berekend. Maar voor die tool werd altijd gezegd… baan korter dan 2500m, maak een berekening… alles langer kan met flaps 30, mits de baanconditie het toe laat.
Bij een automatische landing vanwege mist… los van baanlengte wordt een flaps 40 aangeraden. Je hebt dan een iets lagere neus-stand waardoor je op het laatste moment de verlicht van de baan iets eerder zou kunnen zien.
Goed… goeie vraag, maar veel variabelen.
Hoop dat het iets duidelijker is geworden.

Hi Chris,
There is no Glide Slope for this runway. But the FMC has calculated a 3 degrees path that is slightly off with the PAPI which we have to follow. So it might give a GlideSlope warning and this is briefed prior starting the approach.
So this is why we were laughing + the FO had to push twice.
It is funny to see that the feeling you have in the cockpit and what you see outside do not always give the same idea... There was not really a reason for the slight second bump...

Ik heb zelf in 2007 en 2008 in het groen aan de andere kant van de cockpit deur mogen meevliegen, en het uitzicht gaat nooit vervelen. Madeira blijft helemaal een mooie 😁.

30 geeft minder weerstand en dus het brandstof verbruik is iets minder. Ook zorgt 30 voor minder geluidshinder...

Is an airline pilot actually nervous when he lands at Madeira 05 (I know this is 23)?
Not really. Slightly more concentrated when there is more wind. ;-)
