My personal theory on why military pieces last so long is that they’re typically rather utilitarian, being made of sturdy materials, but also many many pieces are mass produced, and they’re worn for a specific time period and then usually stored. It’s a significant enough life event that veterans typically don’t just throw their gear away, but they also don’t usually continue to wear them after their service. This is especially true for wars like ww2 where the amount of people drafted was rather huge
