As soon as I saw a video length of 38 minutes, I would have clicked no matter the title/ subject matter- because you've established a viewer base that respects and appreciates the 'no fluff' style videos that you produce, and we know that it's going to be 38 minutes well invested.

I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on chatgpt, and how it's going to affect the UA-cam learning space. I've been tinkering with it the last few weeks and it can create some super authentic sounding scripts, even listing shot selections as it goes. Very soon it's going to get even harder to be able to tell which channels are 'real', and which are just spat out of AI to optimise views.

My teachers in design school would always emphasize how easy we have it, because we have computers to do certain tricks like color gradients. In their day, they had to make one color of paint smoothly transition into another one, whereas we could now do it with a couple clicks. Every industry seems to have benefited from automation. Photographers can set their cameras to auto, eliminating a big portion of their decision-making process and allowing them to focus on the subject or composition. The other day I got my teeth x-rayed and the dental hygienist used AI software to highlight areas of concern for the dentist to examine.
In blue-collar jobs, we seem to find it easy to treat certain jobs like commodities. Why not automate the work of a truck driver? That's how I feel about, for example, UA-cam channels that compare two versions of a product by simply reading off the specs and comparing those specs against each other. The art of a critic or a storyteller should come from repackaging that information- drawing lines around or between disparate figures. A lot of conceptual contemporary art (think bananas duct taped to gallery walls) is beautiful in this way because it's where "I could do that" and "well, you didn't" intersect.

So yes, there will be thousands of channels spitting out millions of procedurally-generated pieces of media every minute. And there will be a disappointing number of people who consume really low-quality media either way.There's a feeling of "I can't believe these suckers are falling for it" that you'll get (probably not unlike watching Bravo or TLC). Outside of that feeling, all I hope for is our toxic relationship to work to come to the center of the discussion. People will lose jobs. You don't have a travel agent in 2023. Owners don't hire sign painters for their shop windows any more. I think if your job can be automated, it should be a net positive. The real problem is that workers never get to see the upside. Productivity keeps ratcheting up while the number of working hours and the resulting wages stay the same.
@@netshaq2 Thanks for your thoughts. Yeah, it's a tricky one. I'm seeing both viewpoints:
1. AI *will* replace lower skillset jobs, &
2. No it won't, never fear! It will just make your life easier and allow you to concentrate on more important things!
It reminds me of that motivational-meme where one side of the bus is colourful and joyful and the other side is miserable and monochrome.
I guess like most things, the 'real world' results are going to be on a spectrum, and we're going to find out pretty soon either way! :/

Hey! Fellow Instructional Designer here with a tip on learning objectives and outlining.
I use Blooms Taxonomy to build a few sentences of what the learner should be able to do by the end of training e.g. "Learners will be able to recall X, apply it in Y situation and create Z"
I then colour co-ordinate each seperate section (the recall X, Apply Y, Create Z). When I start writing a rough bulleted outline of how my content/script will go, I will use the same colours to highlight how it ties to my original objectives.
This helps you weed out "nice to know" from "need to know" information, as well as how you structure your content so that the relevant information is layered well.

I kind of wish you didn't undercut your own generosity. Yes, you could put in "more" effort into the format of the information, BUT I personally think it's unfair to say that the "lack of effort" put in somehow makes you less generous. If you formatted this into a course or book, I doubt it would have the same level of accessibility as this video you ended up publishing. Dissemination of information for the sake of educating is very generous in its own right. Many people would have tried to capitalize on this in a more financially motivated way, so I really appreciate your generosity. You didn't have to make the video and offer your insight and skillsets, but you did.
This is meant to be a compliment, but I fear it's coming across like I'm invalidating the way you perceive yourself. Anyway, take it or leave it I guess! Sometimes folks have difficulty generating pride, so I just like to highlight things when I can!
as someone studying for the CPA exam and neck deep in poorly produced study videos from various study services, this video has showed me all the ways in which those videos fail. a lot of professional study-material providers will do the absolute bare minimum. sometimes videos are listed with a topic in the title that is not covered in the video, while an unprepared presenter fumbles from point-to-point. "boring" information is the kind that benefits the most from thoughtful instructional design

This is really terrific content! I've never been the sort of person that interacts much with videos, more of a silent viewer, but I've liked the video (and commented now). And I'm still left wishing I could like the video at least another 4 times!

Now that I know that your expertise is in design and that you have experience as a teacher, it makes a lot of sense why the quality of your content is where it's at. I could go on about how well your script-editing section was phrased, but the real value for me was at the end about the priority settings on a camera. I've had a DSLR for years and wanted to use it casually but never got the hang of dialing in all 3 settings. Knowing now that I can just automate two of those makes the process much less daunting. I could have read the manual, sure, but in none of my film classes were those auto settings explained to me, so it never occurred that that was a possibility.

The topic around 12:30 is something I struggle with SO MUCH. I’m not making videos, but just when trying to explain something you have a lot of expertise in. The “exceptions” that prove the rule often are invasive thoughts that can be difficult to handle.

Great video. Really appreciated your insight into crafting engaging narratives. A lot of this I find is very applicable to my day job in software design. For example, making sure to consider what the user already knows before diving into a new experience. Assuming they're not clueless, but also not expecting them to know everything right off the bat.

Crazy how similar your thought patterns to approaching good video content are to MrBeast despite the very different goals you both have with UA-cam and content. This video was fantastic and I listened to the whole thing despite having almost no interest in making content - but helped a lot with my thinking on how to teach people software engineering practices

while it's obvious that you don't write your video scripts with audio listeners/low vision or blind ppl in mind (most people don't this isn't shade), your videos tend to be really good at conveying meaningful instructions to those not or unable to watch anyway, and I think that speaks to the attention you bring to script writing and I appreciate it personally

Super helpful. I work w/ instructional designers and all of your recs are spot on. Curious (because it wasn't in the script) -- what's your take on formats like interactive e-learning or other kinds of interactive, multi-modal content (ie something you'd make in Articulate Storyline)
To bring some of this together with that "get started" tip at the end:
these aren't things that you need to know *before* getting started, having watched this video, you now have the knowledge required to be sensitive to these things and adapt to them once you've started.
You have the knowledge, but you won't build the skill until you challenge yourself to do something focused, and serious.

I'm in software, and trust me when I say that video is often the worst way to convey information for my field. You have much prereq knowledge, you can skip most, you can't easily search the information. It's a net negative for it

This might sound dumb, but how much time do you spend writing a script for a video thats around 7 or 9 minutes long? This would give me a framework on how much time I should spend on my own videos and would be really helpful.
The first draft might be done in under an hour, but I usually sit on them for at least 2 months, waiting for new ideas to make their way into the script. I really wish I could streamline the process, as it's my #1 bottleneck

The company I work for created and hired me to the position of “media production specialist”, where I’m tasked with creating all kinds of training and promotional content. The overrepeating of known information is something that I recently noticed with Charles Cornell videos (music theory). He will explain what a mode is in every single video that he even mentions one off-hand. This is so exhausting to someone with a musical background. I have noticed that he has consciously dumbed down his music theory and overexplains things so he can focus on the early highschool demographic - likely to make a push to sell his courses
