  • The Shadow work and pensions secretary Liz Kendall has told Sky News that "everyone that can work, should work".
It comes ahead of the chancellor's autumn statement, which is expected to include measures to get people with health problems into work from home, in order to reduce benefits expenditure.

Fix the housing crisis, Fix zero hours contracts, Make bosses pay actually liveable wages. Most people on benefits are in work but their pay does not stretch far enough.

Looking for work does not guarantee finding work. What would Labour do to those who fail to find work despite doing all they can to look for it ? I feel that whoever gets into power at the next general election it will be a return to the austerity policies that has already murdered more than a quarter of a million vulnerable people.

Nobody has told the establishment that austerity is only effective during times of economic boom, not during economic stagnation and decline. Tax revenues the government collects will decrease forcing them to borrow more money to cover public expenditures.

It is depressing to see Labour, in effect, doubling down on Tory plans to punish those with mental health challenges and/or physical disabilities by removing benefits from them if they don't work, or don't work from home. There is zero evidence to support the idea that there are sufficient jobs, specifically home based jobs, of the right type available, or that employers are actively looking to employ those with these health or disability difficulties.
Instead of focusing on the 'burden' of welfare expenditure, Labour should be proposing a wholesale reform of the tax code and a massive investment in the resources available to HMRC to pursue tax avoiders. This approach would bring in far more income for any future UK Govt. The cheese pairing approach to the welfare budget that Labour and the Tories are pursuing is likely to cost more money to administer than it will save.

Disability in people with different forms could work from home part time, but nothing is available and some would like to work part time for women who have disability and raised or raising a family would like to work from home with a good wage. Some older people who have worked upto retirement, why should they be forced back to work, and not the younger ones who have left school and colleges and foreigners that just live on the state and take and take. Why are the DWP attacking retired and disabled and people with medical problems awaiting specialists being disrespectful to clients in person or on the phone? That is not being helpful, as that kind of attitude from DWP makes people's health condition worse by bringing stress which in some cases causing heart attacks and strokes.

People at the job centre are often stuck in limbo with either limited or no qualifications or experience, rather than force them to continue to look for jobs that either don't exist or they're unqualified for, let them go back to college or volunteer to get experience without punishing them by removing the money they need to live on, and leave sick people alone, it does nothing for their health to have the dwp breathing down their neck, let them decide for themselves when they're well enough to make steps to go back to work.

Follow the Tory line just change the narrative just who defines who can actually work? A lot of disabilties are not visable and then there's location there are vast areas of Britain where there just are no jobs or the ones that are available people can not get to them because they have no transport or the transport links are virtually non exsistant. Working from home is a wonderful idea if that job can be done from home and as advanced as technology is the majority of industries still require humans to physically do them. Are there 2 million working from home jobs available? Kendle is just politely demonising those on benefits while conveintly forgetting that the majority of them have paid into the system for most of their lives perhaps the focus needs to be more on the ones that have not like the tax dodging rich and big coroporations they cost Britain way more than those that are on benefits. There are 4x as many benefit fraud investigators compared with tax fraud investigators its time that changed go after the real crooks.

Agreed, definitely. Like I mentioned a couple of times in comments on this post, I am in the USA, but have many friends and relatives in the UK. We don’t have refugees/asylum-seekers house in the hotels over here. But, where it gets frustrating, is that if a disabled person is waiting for subsidized housing, which can be a vey long wait, that wait can be made even longer when someone from one of those countries comes in. After requesting asylum, that person will almost immediately declare that they have no place to live. They will be considered for emergency housing, which means they are leapfrogging to the front of the list to get housing That sometimes the disabled have been waiting for for years.

In short, the companies which Labour and Conservative MPs have investment in can't find enough people to exploit. Aww, poor them. Where are all the job offers from all these job vacancies? Both parties could threaten unemployed people with the firing squad if they wish, the decision as to whether a job seeker is offered a job is still made by companies, not the job seeker themselves.

I have to say that I have never bought into this dignity and respect of work thing. I work for the money, pure and simple. There's certainly no dignity in poverty though.
Not having money worries goes a long way to easing one's 'mental health'
I have always been self employed, and, quite honestly, I don't do that many hours, but I do earn a very good living. This was my aim from when I started working, it wasn't for the 'dignity' of work.
I do think though, that the unemployed are expecting an easier ride from Labour, and it doesn't look like they will get it.
This debate is not exclusive to the UK, much the same is being said all across Europe, the States, Australia etc.

If the Government stopped trying to turn this country into a pure service economy and returned to supporting manufacturing and industry, there would be a hell of a lot more jobs on offer.
The Tories seem fixated on this idea that the only workers that matter are office staff, then throw everyone else on a bonfire of ignorance. That attitude needs to be given the boot.
There are literally millions of highly skilled and experienced trade workers and labourers in this country, many of them out of work or being forced into jobs that do not suit their career experience whenever another site is closed down, but it's always the shirt-wearing office staff that seem to get all the attention and credit for filing paperwork and ticking boxes.

Reduce Income Tax, make wages and salaries more realistic instead of slaries lowering and wages stagnant, especially in northern England, and more people could work. But, why should people work 2 or 3 jobs just to pay Bill's and make basic ends meet when Tory and Labour govts keep taxing the working and poor classes?

I can see this costing the governmet more money with claims and court cases wen things go wrong

A tad hypocritical, these people are paid huge wages to look after the public but hey, they only turn up in Parliament when they feel like it, so shouldn't they be taking their own advice and get to work because they dont work half as much as they should do.
They should also keep their hands out of the bank of the taxpayer.

One of my friends who was a Period Dignity Officer within Dundee City Council used to work exclusively from home giving demonstrations on how to use a Tampon applicators and other Menstrual hygiene pads via MS Teams. Apparently he was sacked by the council for not allowing one to one demonstrations at his home and this severely affected his mental health. Working from home can also create mental and physical health problems as well. He now works in the local Primary Schools teaching the students how to Pole Dance. But at least he gets out and about now.
