The reason we didn't conquer Nepal was The Gurkha's. So we decided to invite them to join the British Army! The Gurkha's are amazing warriors and are highly respected here in the UK.

Hope this puts America's independence into perspective. A lot of Americans are under the impression that the British are secretly 'butthurt' over 1776. The reality is America is just another name on the list and our past history with France and Germany etc takes far more precedence in our culture.

I do believe, that in the fullness of time, it'll become obvious that the US gaining independance from Britain was the worst mistake WE (both parties culpable) ever made, as it sowed the seeds for the demise of us both. And that point is fast approaching.
@@JJLAReacts Fun fact: The US senate, as part of the end of 1814 when the US sued for peace against the British - due to the war of 1812 which was still on going - they had to sign a humiliating clause that makes them a subsidiary or side government to Britain. They’re still registered in the House of Parliament as such to this day.

It was William the conqueror who made all slavery illegal in England, and enforced his law with large fines to anyone caught owning slaves. He didn't do it out of the goodness of his heart though, he did it for the money, as there were plenty of slaves in England at the time, and he needed to finance wars.
As said, The British were so impressed by the Gurkhas in Nepal that they invited them to fight for Britain and they still do. The Gurkhas are incredible.

Nepal wasn't totally beaten because of their warrior gurkhas. We were so impressed by them that they now fight for us. There are some excellent videos about the gurkhas. 🇬🇧🙂
Nepal was weird, we fought a bunch and then agreed to instead buy some land off of them and use their troops as 'mercenaries' in the army.
Also the terrain had a large part to it as we couldn't move any heavy equipment up there at the time.

Yes at some point at the end of the war, the Spanish and French owner territories were shared out among the victors Britain and Britain decided then what territories they would keep. Nobody agrees to hand over their territories willingly unless they have lost a war. All legal, all ours but like Hong Kong we did decide to stay.
Hong Kong was on lease for 100 years. Gibraltar was ceded in Perpetuity. Gibraltarians wish to remain British!

Technically that lease was to the original Chinese government that was backstabbed by the CCP when they were weakened by WW2..... the government that's currently ruling Taiwan basically so Hong Kong should have gone to Taiwan.

A sad fact is that many (particularly African) invaded countries that gained independence from the uk have descended into civil war, famine, poverty only AFTER the uk left.
And some have pleaded with us to go back, no male cattle manure.

When we ‘invaded’ Spain and Portugal it was to help them eject Napoleon’s armies.
In regards to the ~400 years of war against the Irish... they weren't a unified people. They were independent principalities/clans who fought against each other as much as they did against the English. The English took an approach of ally, divide, conquer, consolidate, repeat and gradually dominated and replaced the clans from North to south, a similar way Caesar did in Gaul but apparently over a much longer time frame.

Ireland has never been united bar under British rule. The shame is had the British handled what had originally been a relatively small and loosely supported uprising sensibly instead of coming down on the Irish like a ton of bricks, Ireland might have become an equal partner in the United Kingdom along with England, Scotland and Wales. Ironically there are more people of Irish decent in the rest of the British Isles that there are in Ireland itself.

Look up the Gurkhas (Napal), they held against the British and we saw a strong ally, they've served in the British army ever since... highly respected soldiers. The only other national army they serve in is India, as some chose to stay when India went independent...

Gurkhas are some of the best troops in the world and some of the nicest most polite aswell.

There is an awful lot of context missing from this. It does not explain where territory was through marriage, or when it was an act of defence from a foreign attack and distinguish that from anything else.
Yes, the original video had a lot of context missing (of course it did, especially covering such a long timespan and much intricate diplomacy, in such a short video) but I get your point - it seemed to be deliberately trying to paint England/Britain in the worst light possible, all the way through. I think that's a fair assessment.
But our man JJLA saw right through some of it, and called it out, so credit to him.

I mean there is no denying that the British Empire is the probably the most brutal empire to have ever existed. And im not talking about England before it became Great Britain, im specifically talking about Great Britain. Those wars in Europe between England and France and others are of course brutal, but all of the European majors were doing that shit. Im specifically talking about the Americas, India, China etc.

You see, the trouble with wanting to look back at history to prove some point or other it that, once started, you don't get to choose how far back that search goes or which particular part of later history you can choose to ignore because it's inconvenient.
Ireland made itself a dire enemy of the remainder of the British Isles because it decided to take up and support the Roman Catholic brand of superstitious bullshit. Worse it then allowed itself to be used as a political/military pawn against by the power mongers in Rome against England/Britain.

looking through this list of countries, there`s a big difference between Invasion and being asked to help liberate countries from an oppressive regime .
Yeah, a bunch of that was joint NATO stuff or post WW2 temporary occupation to re-establish democracy and help the civ population recover like in Japan, Germany, etc or what happened in Croatia in the 90's. I don't think those count as "invasion" has an implied aggression to it.
British 'liberation' always comes at a price. And generally they don't 'liberate' places without good stuff in the woods.

British Isles have been invaded several times, including by the Romans, by the Germanic peoples, by the Vikings, by the Normans, by the French, and by the Dutch. when we gave it a go found out we pretty good at it. if you did not invade it be invaded by french/Spanish / ....... and so on, that was how things were back then

The vast majority of Irish do not hold a grudge, they're nice people who are very similar to us and understand it was nothing to do with ordinary British people. Much bad feeling is still perpetuated by ignorant "Plastic Paddy's'' in places like Boston? And those are the words of my Irish mates.

Britain became the country which saved so many Irish as they left looking for food and work. I have Irish down both lines who came over during the famine, settled and married and bred. Served alongside a great many southern Irish in the army.
I have to say, as an Englishman, my experience of/with the Irish, concurs with the OP. Compared to the Scots and the Welsh, the Irish don't 'whinge' or gleefully express anti-English sentiments (like when we lose to anybody at football). 🙄 Not saying all Scots/Welsh do, far from it... but some definitely do. The only time I've had 'historical' friction with an Irish person was way back in 1986 when I said 'Londonderry' during an innocuous conversation, rather than Derry. But that's it, hardly worth mentioning.
But to those Scots and Welsh who still have a chip on their shoulders: get a grip and grow up! Because your animosity towards 'England' is being used by our mutual enemies to destroy all our nations... and you are one of their tools.

I went to school in Winchester, Hampshire and it was always implied that our darkest day was when the Normans invaded in 1066 because we are still Saxons. The Normans ( North Men ) were Vikings, not French but used old French as their Language. It wasn't until Henry IV that a King spoke English instead of French. It has to be remembered that before all of them were Celts, In Sussex ( South Saxons ) where I live there are still many Celtic place names such as Lewes meaning hills.
The unification of England occured, because a more powerful tribe took over a lesser tribe, and that continued until eventually a unified country was formed, in AD927.
Ireland was a landmass, not a country. It was made up of similar disparate tribes to that of England, and England (now being a big tribe), took over those smaller tribes in Ireland bit by bit, in the same way that England was formed, and that is the spirit of the geopolitics that existed 1,000 years or so ago, across Medieval Europe, dating back to the Roman Empire, and before. Hate it if you like, but you are clearly descended from the same aggressive Europeans that spent 1,000 years pointlessly fighting their neighbours back and forth for a personal land grab. The English just happened to be very good at it.
The fact is that things are different now, except in Russia, and its called CIVILISATION. And that wasn't suddenly magicked out of a top hat either, civilisation had to be fought for!
So no point in expecting political correctness at a time when life was generally worth nothing. It was a time of the survival of the fittest. Ireland only developed a sense of nationhood under British rule. It was the one and only time that Ireland has ever been united, and yes, it was under the Union Jack. Some Irish seem to think that Ireland existed as a sovereign country since the beginning of time, but that is just another nationalist myth, like Americans are taught that the American War of Independence, was something other than a British civil war. When Americans became American, is anyone's guess, but a Declaration issued in 1776, did not change the mutual heritage of colonialists and Hanoverians, who were in reality, re fighting the C17th English civil war, i.e. Republicans versus Monarchists, but in the 13 colonies.

We didn't conquer Nepal because the Gurkhas were so very good. So good we did the next best thing and took them all into the British army - some of our most feared troops. If you can't beat them, make them join you. 😂

taken by force. It was done through Trade. However such trading gave the British some control over the countries
it traded with, but the British Empire was not formed through battles !

The East India Company had their own army, and Britain used their armies to enforce colonial rule in India, Kenya, South Africa, and many other Commonwealth countries.

One of the ironies of this story is the contribution made by the Irish. A large part of England’s military has always been Irish and still is! The Royal Irish Regiment and the Irish Guards are two of the best British Regiments. Around 40% of the Irish Guards are from the Republic, with the rest mostly from Northern Ireland. So when you next see the men in red coats standing guard in front of Buckingham Palace remember that they maybe Irish.

Many points is that Britain required ports to safe guard our sea lanes to the empire. Coal was taken from Wales and shipped to Falklands, Aden, Simestown ect to keep the Royal Navy supplied. You spotted Gilbraltar gave us control of entry to the Med. Malta gave us a Naval base and control of Eygpt gave us a Naval based in the Eastern Med. Aden and British Somalia gave us control of Suez canal from the India Ocean.
The strategy is absolutely brilliant!

@@pd8066 unfortunately the navy is not as big and powerful as once was. At the height of Englands naval power we had around 200 or 300 ships, not anymore. People were forced into military service, but not anymore thank heavens. In order to secure our country better we need to build up the navy again. Gone are the days we could fight 2 conflicts at the same time as we have done in past era's.
We have a weird relationship with Africa… we invaded a lot , which is true. But we also set up the African coastal patrol (I don’t remember the exact name) where we literally had ships surrounding Africa and stopped other countries from taking slaves as we were trying to abolish it👌🏽

I just love how suddenly- when it comes to Britain's "invasions"- America suddenly stops claiming to have won WW2 singlehandedly! Not to mention they were also involved when it came to Serbia, Italy, North Africa, the Middle East and Afghanistan a time or two (again selective about their involvement considering that some of those they started!)

I'd say the Colonies do count as invasions.... at least in places where a native peoples claim to the land was ignored in favour of setting up the Colonies.

It’s interesting but in the UK accents change marginally every 3-4 miles, the bigger the distance the greater the noticeable difference in accent. Also Linguists have worked out that new accents develop within 50 years, so for instance following World War Two many people from bombed parts of London were moved out to completely new settlements created from scratch in various parts of the country and these developed their own unique accents in that 50 year time frame.
As A Brit, I think its important to note how Britain was formed, we have been invaded and conquered by many warring folk, Celtic tribes, Saxons, Vikings, Romans, Normans to name a few, it sort of builds a mentality of fighting, yes more controlled nowadays, but we will fight if we have to

Gurkha are just one of the tribes of India/Nepal. Basically, British needed to use mercenaries against the Indian rebellion of 1857 which was mostly in Northern and central parts of India. Since most of the soldiers had already revolted, British lured Sikhs and Nepali King to fight against the revolutionary armies. In exchange Nepali king was to keep his kingdom as a dominion and not as a directly occupied territory. Divide and conquer. Thats the reality of "bravery" and employment in british army.

Nepal it's a combination of territory and their fighting men- the Gurkhas are from Nepal and have served in the British Army ever since the failed invasion. The Gurkhas are always the most decorated in the British army. The saying is if you need to defend and attack at the same time , that is why God made the Gurkhas.
I grew up next to the home of the British army, Aldershot.
The Ghurkhas are the Nepalese forces. We couldn't defeat them so we invited them to join us. They did.
They are well renowned as the best fighting force within the British army. Famous for the Kukri knife, google it.
The British did not treat the veterans with enough respect for years, which led to a campaign to give them the same rights.
Aldershot is now overflowing with Nepalese, which is not an issue for most, but some ignorant borderline racists, maybe a little.
Aldershot now has a Buddhist temple close to the football ground and the Dalai Lama has even visited to do a talk/ceremony.
Frankly, in summary from my point of view, the deserve the utmost respect. I have many stories I could go into, but as a student of history and WWII I cannot speak more highly of the Nepalese. Additionally, my choice of birthday meal was Nepalese for many years. A seriously impressive race oof people who deserve a lot of respect.

Yes, that is often overlooked. I believe that France had 3 x our population until the mid-1800s. We usually had to fight while very much outnumbered.

Look them up, you won't be disappointed. Warriors so tough and honourable, that we instead hired them. And the toughest Nepalese men serve in the British army to this day. Some of the finest soldiers to ever serve Britain. There is a deep channel of respect in both directions of this relationship.
In answer to your question, Finland and the Baltic states were mentioned when post WW1 Bolshevism was spoken of.
Unsure if we invaded Sweden but most of the time they were allied to us or neutral later. However they were briefly allied to Imperial France during the Napoleonic wars, therefore we would have at least fought them at sea or "put foot" on what was left of their colonies, if that counts?
I love that question about mexican food, acutaly we dont really have mexican food here, there is a few, the mexicans trying to get into the US, the big pond in the middle, they not bothered getting here, having said that, we have so many cultures here in the UK and authentic food from around the world, cooked by the people from those shores, chinese, indian, caribean, greek italian, and many others, that we have that sort of food on every street corner,
to the point, that the UK's national dish, is now chicken tikka masala, long story behind that, happy to pass on, where we think it came from, but its not actualy an indian dish

JJLA It might be an idea to read up on our history before passing judgement. England was invaded by French -speaking Normans in 1066. The mediaeval wars were effectively Frenchmen fighting Frenchmen. French was the language of government until the 14th century - the very words we use in government and the legal system are of French origin.
Wrong. The Hundred Years War was not French on French. A few English kings had French mothers that's all. French language died out eventually, only being spoken by nobles. English commoners never got to speak French. Hence, we speak English today. Some French words were incorperated through time though.

The Hundred Years War was fought between Frenchmen - those with estates in England were required to swear allegiance to the French king for their estates in France. This was the root of the problem because the Frenchman who happened to be king of England was also expected to bend the knee along with his vassals.

He is buried in the chapel at Fontevrault - we call him 'king Henry' when he was in reality 'Henri, Comte d'Anjou' - John Lackland was Jean Sans Terre. etc etc etc

In retrospect, the influence of French culture and language on the English disappeared centuries ago. German influence became much more to the fore. Queen Victoria probably spoke English with a German accent. In today's world French as a language has negligible influence on day to day English life.

Nepal was never Conquered.... if you do a video on the Gurkhas, you'll learn that they were so ferocious that they held off our invasions and they respected our own martial ability, so we signed a pact and to this day, we still recruit our elite Gurkha's from Nepal. We are generally disliked by many countries and most of our neighbours really dislike us, I guess they have good reason
Norway likes us: they have sent a huge Christmas tree every year since the end of the Second World War in gratitude for the UK's role in their liberation and this is erected in Trafalgar Square. Ukraine likes the UK too. England and Portugal have been allies since 1373 and the two countries have never fought one another.
There have been many continental European wars which did not involve England/Britain/the UK because borders have been so fluid and tbe continent was a patchwork of mostly small states with shifting borders, annexations and alliances and with major religious divides, building onto much larger states in the 19th century, particularly, so frequent wars were inevitable.

What this video fails to point out is all the times Britain was invaded by other European civilisations before we final said "enough is enough"
His constant use of the word ‘invaded’ isn’t correct. Yes, we did colonise large parts of the world, but we also ‘stepped in’ in many of these cases to protect world peace and to save countries from war or dictatorships. There’s a big difference. To set the balance straight I’d recommend watching a video about how many times the UK has actually been invaded over the last couple of thousand years.
Sweden is one of the few countries Britain almost never have been at war with due to its situational geopolitical position which makes Sweden and Britain natural allies. There is one exception though and it was the Anglo Swedish war between 1810-12 which was a result of the Swedish defeat in the Pomeranian war.

The title is wrong. Most of these places were invaded after England had gone out of business in 1707. There were a few feet in a few doors before that, but not yet very extensively (notably interference in Indian politics) but nearly all of this came AFTER the union of 1707.

The UK and Ireland have a Common Travel Area. That means that people of either country can travel to, live and work in, vote in a stand for parliament in, have the same rights and duties in, the other country. Churchill did want to invade Sweden during WWII because Sweden was supplying iron ore to the Nazis. However he was persuaded against it, by the British Ambassador to Sweden. The video did not mention the Falkland Islands, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, which are still under the Crown.

What this kind of summary neglects is that really no country was any different. E.g. The Spanish, The Dutch, The French, the Belgians, The Romans etc etc ALL engaged in conquering. the point was that Britain was the best at doing it. If the conquered third world people had possessed similar technology and fighting skills, who's to say they would have not tried to conquer European territory? EVERYONE was like that in those days. That's no excuse, just a fact. Of course none of us think it was the 'right' thing to do. But when you discover peoples who have natural resources just lying about, and have no use for them as you would, you tend to exploit them. If you employ the natives to extract them for you then you can use that labour instead of bringing more from home. BUT EVERYONE WAS AT IT! Why single out the British because they were the most effective? We've all moved on now. No one in Britain now would contemplate colonialism. It belongs to ancestors.
"Invaded" is sometimes a misused word in this vlog. During WW1 and WW2 the Brits went in to FREE the people - likewise the Napoleonic Wars. For many centuries there was fierce competition between England (pre Britain and UK), Spain, The Netherlands, France to rule the seas and discover new countries - and France and Spain regularly tried to raid England (they lost). The misuse of the word 'invade' when the reality is 'discovered' and colonised relates to America (which is why English is the spoken language!), Australia, New Zealand etc.
